  1. I see that wikipedia quotes around 3 million units sold for the lynx, which would seem to make it about 12x more succesful in terms of units sold than the atari jaguar. On the other hand, the lynx was likely quite expensive to manufacture in that time period and I know atari had to cut the price to compete with the gameboy, so it probably wasn't making all that much if any profit on lynx console sales. A typical strategy for old (and current) console manfuactureres was to take a loss on the hardware and make the money through game development licenses sold to third party developers. However if you look at the lynx (and jag) it doesn't seem like there was that much 3rd party support, so atari couldn't have been making up their hardware losses with this economic model. In short, I can't see that the lynx was that much of a moneymaker for atari, although 3 million units sold doesn't seem half as bad as many other offbeat consoles from the 90s.

  2. Hm the description you provided sounds like it is just an audio recording, but the description from best electronics openly talks about it being an audio and visual cd to display the capabilities of the jag cd. That makes it sound like a cinepak video or executable to launch some demos...

  3. Is it just jaguar game commercials and/or rolling demos, or is it a fantastic music and video collage? Tried searching youtube but didn't get any hits.

It was an item at best electronics

Unique Atari Jaguar Collector Item! The Jaguar Launch CD, was a Audio and Visual CD that was given out to Atari Large Buyers (Chain Stores) of the Jaguar systems! It was used to display and show the capabilities of the Jaguar Multi Media System! In a CD Jewel Case. Sold Out

  4. Hm maybe I ought to revisit cybermorph. I played it for an hour or two one day and beat all but one of the first group of planets, but I didn't remember it saving anything when I booted it up on other occasions and played it casually. Maybe I wasn't far enough in, or maybe my cart's save ability is defective

  5. I know at one point Atari was giving away 1 of the 1st 5 games by mail order if you bought the system or 4 or so games, I got Dino Dudes, man that one ot me made fun of by my roommates, Dino dudes, Checkered Flag, Cybermorph, and Kasumi Ninja. The great 64bit machine that was going to kill the Sega Genesis.

    .

Cybermorph was a very long and involved game I remember the same friends hating on the jag up till I got AvsP and Iron Soldier. Then one guy got addicted to cybermorph and dedicated the summer to playing through it. A beer in one hand a cigaret hanging out of his mouth and the ag controller in hand facing the world of Cybermorph.

    Boy I hate that game.

Addicted to Cybermorph, that's something I've never heard before. How do you spend the summer playing through it, I think there's no password system and no saving, so you'd have to start from the beginning each time? Even though I think the game isn't bad, merely bland, that sounds like torture.

  6.

    No, you wouldn't. :-D

Battlemorph has nice atmospheric music and double the framerate, and you never play that.

Hey how do you know that :-D I like the Battlemorph music and I think I would definitely play it if it were on cart and I could save my progress. As it is, I haven't justified the cost of entry to buy the CD version and get a memory tracker.

  7. You're fine without the RF shielding. Is someone still selling NOS mobos? I know Best ran out, I haven't checked w/B&C to see if they stock them. Wouldn't mind have one around for future needs.

Yes, I saw someone selling them on ebay a couple weeks ago. It looked like he had more than one to sell because you could choose how many you wanted. Not sure if he's still selling them though.

  8. I got my jag used and didn't have it for several months. I bought it a short while later because it was inexpensive, 3d, exclusive to jag, and seems like a game you need to truly experience the jag and what it was like back in the day. It doesn't get much play but it's not an awful game, just a little boring compared to other titles.

  9. ^Good points on the programming side of things, but coming up with all the artwork, 3d models, textures etc to make a complete 3D game per 1994/1995 standards still seems like it would take a very long time in and of itself. It seems that having multiple people work on the artwork would greatly speed up the process.

I should have mentioned this before or rather asked...on the other 7800 that you couldn't get to work. Were you even able to get the 7800 bios screen to come up when you plugged in Food Fight? I think even with a fairly dirty cart that will still come up in most cases and then present you with garbled screen graphics or white screen.

No, the tv would just display images like in the first post. I've since been able to use those carts on the new system, so its not a dirty cart issue.

  11. I took the plunge and bought an av modded unit. Its working out well and I'm pleased to see my old carts still seem to work. I'm using a genesis controller for the moment and noticed pole position is unplayable with it (it doesn't recognize the gas button being pressed), I guess this is due to it thinking the second 7800 button is pressed down at all times, so the brake is trumping the gas. I saw that best electronics sells an adapter for genesis controllers and jaguar controllers to be used with other atari systems - any idea if these adapter cables would allow for two button usage for 7800 games, or if it is designed only with the 2600 in mind?
