I prefer Force Five to Jingi Storm, the modified character designs in Jingi Storm are just needlessly goofy. Force Five feels like a real serious Japanese fighting game, Jingi Storm has too many weird jokey elements - plus its nice to have some female fighters in the game. I think both games really lean heavily toward the Virtua Fighter play style. Not only do they have the same control scheme of one punch button one kick button and a block button, but techniques I use in Virtua Fighter seem to translate over pretty well. The game didn't really feel like a Tekken game to me.

I don't think that's an uncommon thing for people who get into collecting or people who get into a hobby that has an aspect of preservation in it to eventually utilize the item less and less. Even people with retro cars often wind up just storing their cool old car in the garage to make sure it doesn't get rained on or damaged, and only drive it out on special occasions instead of using it every day or even month. Eventually it begins to feel like a ball and chain or a chore to maintain the item or keep significant dedicated space for the item, rather than a cool item you're excited to own. I guess this is why there is a saying for vintage car owners, that the best days in a vintage car owners life are the day he buys the car (exciting to get a new fun item) and the day he sells the car (exciting to offload an item that he doesn't use and get more cash, space and free time to do other things). I don't think its unusual for people who are into old video games to eventually feel like they aged out of the hobby, especially when youtube is a thing and you can just watch a little gameplay video to remind yourself of what a game is like, or show someone part of an old game that you find interesting. Thing is, after some time passes or your kids take an interest in something related to it, you think about your old stuff and the experiences with rose tinted glasses and wish maybe you still had some of it. When I was 18 I felt like I had completely outgrown video games and I barely played any for several years. When I was 26 I got back into the games/systems of my childhood, it was a comfort because I was going through a stressful time in my life and didn't have a lot of other outlets for some quick fun that I could do while alone. Years later, as an adult with a disposable income, it was fun to "treat" myself to basically any game stuff I remembered ever wanting as a kid. In the later period, I came to the realization that I'd accumulated too much, hence I downsized, but from my own hot and cold periods in my life, I knew it would be a good idea to keep a smaller collection for nostalgia and the inevitable day when I get really interested in it again rather than completely get rid of all of it. Just wish I kept my jaguar and CD unit in the reduced collection since its just so expensive to re-buy either and emulation isn't that great for this system

Regarding your original question, I doubt there's any coordinated effort to do a jaguar game download service on the vcs, but since you can install windows on it, you could certainly run the PC jaguar emulators to have a similar effect.

I only had about 6 or 7 games, I sold high value games in their own auctions, but I sold all the jag stuff at around the same time. I've also downsized other console collections I had in recent years such as my PS1, sega saturn, and sega genesis collections. In an earlier period of collecting I was almost more concerned about quantity than quality, or random completionist things like "I've got almost every Battle Arena Toshinden and Virtua Fighter game, let me go get the few I don't have just to have them all in the collection as a set". After owning the stuff for awhile and finding out which games I actually enjoyed playing and which I just had on the shelves to pad things out and make my collection look bigger and more interesting, I went and downsized stuff significantly and sold a bunch of games while keeping a "core" set of games for these consoles I knew I really enjoyed playing, or that had meant a lot to me as a kid. I haven't regretted the slimming down of my PS1, saturn or sega genesis collections.

I sold mine a few years ago because I had not played it in over a year. I periodically miss it, maybe consider downsizing the collection and keeping just favorite games instead of completely selling all of it.

Hm, mono halves the amount of memory that would be needed compared to stereo so it seems like the way to go when memory is as tight as it would be on a cart. The ability to switch music realtime might be another aspect to be compromised on... Of course the real way to save a ton of memory would be to completely redo the music as midis or some kind of tracker music like .mod files, but that's 1000% more work than simply downsampling and trimming the existing music
-
I wonder how small the music could be condensed to if it is switched to mono, the sample rate is lessened, and maybe some of the longer 2+ minute tracks shortened, and if needed, maybe a couple tracks removed entirely. I bet there would be a way to cut it down a lot and have a good chunk of the music on cart. Kinda like the Tony Hawk games on N64. Obviously there would be tradeoffs but I bet it could be done, heck, I have the audio tools and know how to do it. As a proof of concept, here's one of the Battlemorph tracks. As an three and a half minute minute long full quality stereo uncompressed wav file its 40MB. I cut out the last minute of the song, flipped it to mono and chose a much lower sample rate. The reduced version is 1MB. There's a lot of repetition in this and other Battlemorph tracks, it doesn't seem that unreasonable to maybe cut the length even further, figuring out a good place to loop it with the beginning of the song so it sounds relatively seemless. Could probably have it be a 50 second loop that still sounds pretty good, at which point this track would require far less memory than 1MB. battlemorph music mono low bitrate.wav Just for fun I found a logical loop point at 50 seconds into the track. I changed the track to a 50 second loop and even nudged the sample rate a little higher for better sound quality. The 50 second loop is half a megabyte. It would be about 300kb in the worse sample rate as the first track. battlemorph music mono low bitrate shortened 2.wav

Thanks for the update. I was thinking about this thread over the last few days and periodically checking to see if you posted a picture of something gnarly. Are any of the caps visibly leaking?

Odynexus, a game you would like to play on your Jaguar?
sirlynxalot replied to agradeneu's topic in Atari Jaguar
Maybe there could be some cross-platform interconnectivity between the game versions, like a code you get when beating the lynx version that does something interesting in the jag version or vice versa. Just a random thought since the game could be coming out on multiple platforms. -
A company out of Boston did some simple modifications to make Vectrex machines into pay to play arcade-like machines in the 80s. Maybe someone else did something similar with the vcs. http://vectrexmuseum.com/collection/vectrexminicade.php I've also heard of arcades in places like Latin America or the Philippines rigging up consoles in various pay to play situations - like you get to play PS2 inside an arcade machine or something like a display kiosk, and the money you put in goes to a timer that keeps the power on. If we're talking the Soviet Union, maybe some arrangement like that would be a reasonable guess.

Very impressive. I always wondered how long the game was/how long it would take to complete. I've always liked the game but I don't think I ever got more than 30 or so levels into it.

Sonic and Knuckles worked fine on my nomad. I also played it connected to Sonic 3 on my nomad with no glitches. I think officially, the nomad might have some trouble working with some of the earliest EA games and unlicensed stuff like Accolaid games. I think this is more to sega adding more security features to its genesis consoles compared to the earliest model 1 genesis systems though, and not specifically a nomad issue. I had about 20 games back when I had a nomad and they all worked, including some EA games like Marble Madness and Blades of Vengeance.
-
The simplified levels and fast movement make it easy to really blast through it quickly. Because of the simplification, I'm not sure that I would regard it as the best version of the game, but it certainly makes it easier to pick up and play and enjoy in an arcade-like manner, which is basically what I want at this point in my life.

I got out a measuring tape and measured where I thought the screen was in this image. I guess its a rendering and up to change, but in the picture the screen seems to be a square as opposed to 4x3 or 3x4. Honestly, maybe a square screen wouldn't be the worst idea since there's such a blend of horizontal and vertical games on this one.

Google destroys Atari heritage

I imagine the interior and things like desks have been remodeled and probably aren't the same as when atari was there, but I think something small like bricks from the building would be neat mementos for some of us die hard atari fans. Anyone live in the vicinity to help make this happen? -
Is there a sub forum for the Atari Portfolio?
sirlynxalot replied to dneedham's topic in Dedicated Systems
Thanks, sadly I don't have a portoflio and posted my question as a joke. What does the pin.com program do? Does it just display the same text/screen as shown in the movie, or does it do anything further? Is it the actual program used on the portfolio in the movie or a fan made recreation? -

The real question is if this program is available 😆 *if you're not familiar with the reference, a character in Terminator 2 uses an Atari Portfolio to hack an ATM -
Is advergaming automatically anti-consumer?
sirlynxalot replied to tripletopper's topic in Modern Console Discussion
I hate in-game transactions and advertisements unless they are incidental - like its a racing game and the billboards on the racetrack are advertising other real life videogames by the manufacture (EA did this in some of the Burnout games). I really miss the days when the conventional model was that the user could download an abbreviated demo of the game or get a demo on a console demo disc with only a fraction of the levels/content of the full version. That allowed me to know if I liked what the game had to offer and helped me make a full price purchase for the full game. This still happens somewhat, but I don't see limited demos like this nearly as much as I used to. Plenty of full price games on steam that appear to have no demo version to try. -
I like the way the nomad looks and I like the idea of the nomad, but in the modern day with so many good alternatives, playing games on the nomad is kind of a hassle. And for all the thought that playing a game on real hardware will always better than emulation, that gets bungled in the case of the nomad due to the size and quality of its 90s era screen. Fun fact, I think I read in one of the atariage forums that the guy who designed the Nomad's plastic shell also designed the Atari Jaguar's shell.

The Nintendo logo features in the attract mode and also indicates that Killer Instinct is a trademark of Nintendo, rather than rare. I think its also on the sideart of the real cab (I noticed it was not on the arcade1up's art). Wonder if the rom will be edited to take that sort of thing out similar to how Ninja Turtles was edited to replace the traditional intro music from the show - I'd think they'd still need some kind of permission from Nintendo if it still owns the TM for the name.

Really pumped for the Tempest cab, primarily because I think that particular cab design is a beautiful work of art. I'd love to figure out a mod to get Tempest 2000 on it. Hopefully the control panel won't look too crowded with the trackball and whatever else they might add to make the other games on the machine playable. Wish the coin door was a plastic fascimile with a little depth to it like on the higher end cabs rather than the decal, but that seems easy enough to deal with, I understand they consider a cab like this to be their entry-level $299 model. I'm never that excited about Pong, but I think the 4 player pong table is a fantastic idea and it would be wonderful to play Warlords on it. 4P Xmen is great, imo the other included games on that one aren't exciting me. This cab is great but doesn't give me the same wow factor as some of the others, maybe because a lot of fans have been expecting an xmen cab for a long time now and the other included games don't seem to be classics regarded as well as the marquee title. Killer Instinct is the cab I was least expecting since emulation of it really requires something beefier than an ordinary cheap android board, and all of the licensing involved in terms of getting permissions from Rare, Nintendo and maybe Microsoft. I don't play KI much, but I'm impressed with the job they've done on it and it looks like it would be a hit. The other cabs look great, too. Overall, I'm very happy they are branching out from their typical arcade1up curved sidepanel design and offering some designs that resemble the lines of the original cabs a bit more. It'll make looking at the various home arcade posts I see on social media and other places a lot more interesting when its not someone's collection of 8 arcade1ups that all have the same silhouette.

I have fun with virtua racing and its various ports, even the one to the genesis. I've gone back to Checkered Flag many times to give it a "second" chance and maybe see if I can figure out a way to enjoy playing it, but I've never had a breakthrough where it becomes fun.

Iron Soldier 3 NUON reprint coming 2021 from Songbird
sirlynxalot replied to Songbird's topic in Atari Jaguar
Did the Nuon have any copy protection based on the hardware design of the disc, along the lines of the PS1 or the sega saturn? Or other copy protection for commercial Nuon games? Or could you just burn a game on a CDr and it would run ok like on the sega CD, Jag CD or 3do? -
Atari Jaguar fan site frozen in time since 2000
sirlynxalot replied to sirlynxalot's topic in Atari Jaguar
Welcome back JagCat64. Not sure if you've been out of the loop on the jag scene until recently, but there's tons of interesting stuff going on. Original indie produced games, ports of games from the Atari ST library, replica 6 button pro controllers produced in the last two years, heck people are even trying to re-create the motherboard of the jag-duo based on specs that surfaced on that machine in the last few years. This is definitely an enthusiastic community.
