I was under the impression that Spyro was one of the many Sony releases that had quite a few security checks in it to prevented it from being burned or played in emulators. Have all the security checks been found and the executable modified so you can play in an emulator without weird bugs occurring (loss of progress, missing impossible to collect eggs, etc.)

These days, I rarely find time to play 2600 games. This is probably due to not having a dedicated TV setup with my newly purchased used 2600, nor having my AFBX hooked up to the flatscreen. The only time I do play games is usually through emulator with the specific purpose of achieving a high score in the Atariage HSC.
I can see playing any of the 30 or so games on your list on a regular basis, until I achieve rollage. Once I have done that I usually dont replay a non-2p-simultaneous game.

How accurate are the Atari-to-USB adapters? I figure the delay introduced by analog to digital wouldn’t be that bad, maybe 20ms-60ms.
Never used the Stelladapter though, so I don’t have first hand knowledge.
The AFB2 had hidden paddle games, and does support real paddles as well. You could hack one of those and play kaboom on it.

However, I know its primary creators, AtGames, is notorious for being rather crap, but I heard that a few of the early ones were pretty good. So, which version should I get to show off the games to my roommate?
The Atari Flashback 2 is a VCS on a Chip, and can actually be hacked to install a cartridge port to play real cartridges. There were several variations, some with Activision roms, but still the total game roms were in the low 20s.If you don’t mind emulation, the best AFB to get would be the AFBX. Quite a lot of work has been put into making it play most of the VCS homebrews, or other emulated systems (a800, NES, etc)

the /rom/all-games.ini entry looks like this...
[Atari Lynx]
File=/rom/rom_lynx.goto
Platform=Utility
Sort=8
Year=2021
Genre=unclassified
Description=Switch to Atari lynx games.
Note= \
Please do not turn off the system while restarting.you can delete the /rom_lynx folder and this entry (edit the all-games file w/ notepad) and it will go away.
another way to do it is DONT delete the folder and change the entry to this...
,Atari Lynx]
,File=/rom/rom_lynx.goto
,Platform=Utility
,Sort=8
,Year=2021
,Genre=unclassified
,Description=Switch to Atari lynx games.
,Note= \
,Please do not turn off the system while restarting.
that way you can add it back later if you change your mind. you can remove individual games the same way.I encourage everyone to take the NEXUS pack and run with it! I know my packs are "overkill". lol.
Make whatever you feel is awesome and share it with the rest of us.
The comment character is the comma ‘,’. Odd choice.
why not hash # or dash -. -
With portable and ability to load your own roms being your oniy criteria, it is probably best to get a Nintendo 3DS, and soft-mod it so you can run emulators. I dont know if the most recent versions of Stella have been rebuilt for the 3DS, but it should run almost all the the original software (maybe not Pitfall!2) and most of the homebrew.
The 3DS is still a rather active Emulation platform so it has the most support for up to date emulators.

Wasn't a success! Interesting idea though.
I wonder how the Choose-Your-Own-Adventure games on Netflix did recently. My kids seemed to like the Minecraft and Carmen Sandiego ones. Also released:
Black Mirror: Bandersnatch . Was an interesting diversion with 5 possible endings.
Man vs Wild: several ?
Minecraft Story: several ?

The back says it's a "General Electric Widescreen 4000", I can't find any information on that model, but I see info for a GE Widescreen 1000, which they claim is 3x larger than a 25" TV (does that mean 75" or would that be 9x larger?)
Closer to 8 times bigger than a 25”
Tv 75” diag (16:9) = 65.4in x 36.8in = 2406 sq in
Tv 25” diag (4:3) = 20in x 15in = 300 sq in

I was playing Space Invaders game 33 with my father-in-law, and we noticed the fire button didn't fire every time we hit the button. Has this happened to anyone else?
Is it the button being worn out or dirty, not designed to take rapid input, or the machine itself (atari Jr) not being able to handle rapid input? As in, press fire several times in a second, and it registers maybe two of five presses.
Has anyone else had this issue?
Have you read the instructions? (“It's NOT that common, it DOESN'T happen to every guy, and it IS a big deal”)
https://atariage.com/manual_html_page.php?SoftwareLabelID=459
have you tried frying the cart? (I.e. holding down the game reset switch while flipping the power on/off. That will let you fire-off twice)

@MrTrust, Chex Quest is just Doom reskinned. That would be like saying Noah''s Ark 3D is one of the best SNES games.
For one of the better Advertisement Games, I would say Dumb Ways To Die. Their point was to bring awareness to the dangers of railway crossing to prevent deaths in the UK, and the mini games arent bad. (Although I would say the YT video was better at spreading the message)
I have heard one of the Burger King Xbox (360?) Games weren't horrible, the other two were though.

I haven't played the 800 version of Moon Patrol, but I've played the 5200 version and I'd argue the 2600 version is just as fun, even if it doesn't look as nice.
Yeah, now that I read it again, I misunderstood. The OP likely was asking for the best (iconic/classic) games for the 2600. With that in mind, you could pretty much just look at the best selling games, then games with the most notoriety (Custard’s Revenge, Pac-man, E.T.)

6 hours ago, Materion said:Good hack is Amidar DS - making Your character move 2x faster than original making this game much more playable. I'm wondering if there are more hacks like this that makes games more playable by fixing some issues.
There is the E.T. hack that fixes the pit issue. You only fall in now when your feet move over the pit, not any part of your sprite.

6 hours ago, KaeruYojimbo said:Moon Patrol is a must have. Frostbite is another great game that hasn't been mentioned yet.
But Moon Patrol on the Atari 800 is far better. This is a list of 2600 games that are the most fun to play versus ports of the same game on other systems.
since the 2600 is usually so under powered compared to many other systems of the time period, I would expect the list to mostly be full of 2600 exclusives, or at least games that were designed for the 2600 first and later ported to other systems (I would expect the originals to play to the VCS’s strengths, so the ports would likely not be much better)

1 hour ago, zzip said:How so? I like the 8-bit version, but I don't think any home version beats the arcade.
It probably doesn't, few games do (Soul Calibur DC). I seem to remember the a800 version having more difficulty on the harder settings, with more diagonal barrels being thrown than the arcade (not that I was ever good enough at the arcade version). The graphics were better in the Arcade (or Colecovision, NES), but I probably played the a800 version too much to make a fair comparison.
I withdraw my better than arcade comment, but certainly the 2600 isn't the funniest to play port.

38 minutes ago, zzip said:The 2600 version does have the flying and secret platforms "glitch".. but apart from that I much prefer the 800 version
Not the glitch per se, but I prefer the super double jump in the 2600 version. Which may itself be a glitch, and not intentional gameplay, sort of like the infinite Pole Vault glitch in Decathlon.

30 minutes ago, Jstick said:This one really exceeds the definition of hack in my opinion, having so much extra added...
I think this is the only "hack" I would consider buying an actual cart for (maybe with the exception of Berzerk VE, but that is more of a cool novelty)
I'm sure everyone would agree Venture Reloaded definitively replaces the original.
I agree, and would call it a Total Conversion in line with those *.wad files in the Doom days like Aliens TC that replaced basically all the resources in the game, but Omegamatrix himself calls it a hack.

Most fun on the 2600 (rather than another system)
Space Invaders: better than the arcade. Lots of variations. Invisible Vaders with zigzag bombs is good.
Combat: Better than the arcade(s): Lots of variations. Invisible Tank Pong one of the best.
Pitfall!, H.E.R.O., Mountain King, River Raid: I prefer these versions to the Atari800 versions. Probably the best versions if you dint count Hacks (Pitfall!x256)
Indy 500: VCS exclusive. Only non-homebrew Driving Controller game.
Millipede: is an excellent version of the game. I think I prefer the Atari 800 version, but the VCS version is very nice.
Frogger (Starpath): An excellent port for the VCS.
Warlords: Exclusive to VCS and arcade I think.
Medieval Mayhem: better warlords.
Adventure: Iconic, (and exclusive? ). There are similar games like Quest for the Holy Grail on Atari 800, but the ducks are charming.
Demon Attack, Megamania: Fast paced dual-direction shooters.
Atlantis: Bettter than other ports?
Year's Revenge: iconic and exclusive.
Kaboom, Stampede, (probably almost every Activision release): Were some of the best games for the system, and probably were created first on VCS before porting to other systems, so likely the best versions.
I can second Suoer Breakout (exclusive?), and Astroblast (better than Intellivision).
Can probably think of more, but those are off the top of my head.
AsteroidsSpace Rocks: 2600 exclusive. Best Asteroids like game on VCS.Mario Bros.: Better on Atari 800 and NES.Ms. Pac-man: The Megadrive/Genesis version is better. Pretty sure there are other better ports of this game on platforms from the same era.Pac-man: No, just no. The @DEBRO 4k version, or @DINTAR816 4k/8k versions are better a d are on the VCS. The Atari 800 version is also a good port again.Pole Position: Better on Atari 800, but not sure it is the best port. I miss the arcade driving wheel.Star Raiders: The Atari 800 version is iconic, this version, not so much (it is missing too much).Donkey Kong: The Atari 800 version is better than the arcade. The VCS version is not.-

That thread is out of date, and not updated since 2011.
Newer hacks I know of:
There is also @Omegamatrix’s excellent Venture Hack.
Also @Thomas Jentzsch’s excellent Pitfallx256 that creates 255 new jungle layouts and also increases the difficulty (switches).-

Quick question, is there a place that compares Harmony with Harmony Encore side by side? I could not find it on the site. I am hoping Harmony can play some of my favorites like Supercharger conversions, Alien 8k, Conquest of Mars, Crazy Balloon, Halo 2600, Oystron, Toyshop Trouble, etc, etc..
from another thread, @SpiceWare said this below, so I don’t believe any of those wouldn’t run. I believe the current list of games that won’t play on a non-harmony-encore cart can be counted on one hand (but I might be wrong). Bitchess ( @Andrew Davie), an education cart from SAmerica (64k), Penult ( @Karl G) (128k). I believe the CDFJ driver is supported so all the new Mappy (?)/Galagon @johnnywc /Frenzy (Spiceware) fun is intact.QuoteHarmony: 32K ROM and 8K RAM
Encore: 512K RAM that's used as ROM or RAM as needed by the game.

@1200XL M.U.L.E., I was speaking of these F-type Male to RCA Female Coax adapters. These are needed to get rid of the horrible RF Boxes you used to have to use with the very old 1970s-1980s TVs.

Yeah, $28/$41 isnt a bad price. I ended up having to buy 2 2600 systems from ShopGoodwill.com because the first one didn't work. I think I paid about $40 for the first and $40 for the second, but they came with power supplies and joysticks/paddles, and a few games.
I did end up having to buy the coax adapter for the 2600 to work on my TV, and I still haven't diagnosed the issue with the defective 2600 yet. That should run about $3-$5 bucks.

57 minutes ago, McCallister said:Just to have an 8 player game would be interesting, but might be an excellent fit for convention tournaments.
Even more niche: four player shooting gallery with light guns.
Would a 4 player shooting gallery be feasible? The way light guns work is to blank the screen and flash a white square where the target is. If there are multiple targets, they each have to blank/flash in turn.
Not sure how long each of these flashes needs to stay in the screen, but with multiple targets and multiple players, I would expect the the screen to be a flickery mess at some point. I don’t even remember any 2-player simultaneous light gun games on NES, although that may have been due to a hardware limitation with the gamepad ports and I/O chip.

Legacy versus ARM-based 2600 Game Development
in Atari 2600
Posted
In that case, as I said with NES Doom, the developer wrote a VGA to PPU display driver. If someone were to do something similar for Doom2600, they would have created a VGA to TIA display driver. It isn’t as if the game (Doom) being developed is a 2600 game, rather the video driver is a 2600 game development.
From the perspective of the consumer, Doom2600 would still be a 2600 game. From the developers perspective, it is a game written in C, with a display driver written for the 2600.
