  1. Initial 1-life score. Trying to do this on Stella with a crappy membrane keyboard isn't going to cut it. Will have to switch to my LegendsFB, as I don't know where the AFB2 / AFBX is at the moment. CapitanClassic (1-life) - 8,540
  2. @ZeroPage Homebrew, you might want to remove the link to “ Best Atari 2600 Graphics (Original) Since that poll doesn’t exist this year.
  3. I’m not sure I would classify all those peripherals as add-ons in the same vein as the SegaCD. The SegaCD was an add-on that was required to play games of a specific type. (I almost wouldn’t put Controller interfaces in the same category) With that in mind, the Keyboard (6 games) and Starpath (12?) required the hardware. Starpath might have survived if the market didn’t crash (although piracy might have started being an issue) Weren’t all the Odyssey games only enhanced by the Voice, not required? Intellivision ECS didn’t really release any games, did it? They all died in the crash. You have a point with the Voice though. The Coleco Steering wheel (ExpMod#2), is it required for any games other than Turbo (that it came with)? I see it supports about 5 other games, but I don’t think it is required. I would argue that the VCS expansion was a boon for Coleco. It let parents know that they could upgrade to a coleco and toss their old VCS, and just keep all the games. The Adam was affected by issues and the crash (again). Other than Super Glove Ball, I don’t think any NES game required the glove, although it was supported by several games. R.O.B. Isn’t technically required for either of the two games he was designed for (Stack Up / Gyromite) For the SMS, you are right that several games were designed with the 3D goggles in mind. While I think the console to home computer add-ons would qualify as the same category as SegaCD, they were mostly killed by the market collapse (and following PC price wars). The only other similar (non-controller) examples are the Starpath, IntelliVoice, and 3D glasses. (Along with TurboCD, Famicom Disk System) I don’t think the failure rate is that bad with add-ons anyway. The TurboCD sold poorly in the USA, but did well in Japan, where the PC Engine sold well. All that engineering effort would be wasted if they didn’t take a small amount of effort to localize their changes for other markets. The NES Zapper seemed to be ubiquitous, and many people bought games other than Duck Hunt. (Namco’s GunCon did OK on PSX). Similarly, multi-taps sold fairly well when the number of sports titles exploded on SNES / Genesis / PSX. like the Coleco-ExpMod#1, playing games on other systems also sold decently, (Super Gameboy, GameCude GBA player). I just don’t think Sega had enough information in 1991 (or likely 2 years before the release) to know if CD-rom was the future or not. They were afraid of the Genesis getting left in the dust by Nintendo as well. If Sega didn’t start working on the SegaCD in 1988 (release 1991), and also waited on the 32x, they wouldn’t have had a console until 1994 (6 years from MegaDrive). They might have lost even more market share to Nintendo, with their games struggling on old hardware. After all, the Genesis outsold the MegaDrive by about 5-to-1.
  4. Most of these misconceptions could be cleared up if you read the instructions. It mentions at several points that Koopa has put the the mushroom kingdom under a spell and kidnapped Princess Toadstool and her mushroom retainers. Mario isn’t breaking bricks, he is freeing citizens of the mushroom kingdom turned into bricks/(invisible) It isn’t King Koopa property, and Koopa’s minions aren’t minding their own business. Traitors and enemy Soldiers
  5. in hindsight, but before the Sega CD, how many examples were there? Turbo CD, Starpath Arcadia, ??? I think the Sega CD dropped to $230 by the time the Genesis hit $99 Yes, that was a big problem. There wasn’t really a killer app for the SegaCD when it launched. A lot of releases were just Genesis games with CD Audio too. Agreed. Sonic CD should have been a launch title. Overall I agree with most of reasoning. I guess i don’t usually hear as much about SegaCD being a misstep for Sega as much as I hear about the other. I think bitd I an a lot of other kids wanted a SegaCD, but the cost s prohibitive. Eventually the family got a PC with CD-rom, (about 1992) so the SegaCD was less impressive.
  6. I could see arguments for the other 2, but what did Sega do wrong regarding the SegaCD?
  7. The Last Chance from AtariAge occured June 22, 2023 to July 23, 2023. Al announced the sale of AtariAge to Atari Sept 6, 2023.
  8. Android RB College - 173 min The extended contracts for my OC/DC for Hawaii finally expired, just before 5-Star. Instead of continuing their contracts for 10C, I decided to accept an offer from another college. Decided on Waco, because the conference had the highest overall Stars for all the competing teams. Going to be fun building up a winning team. Atari 2600 (Stella) Berry Fun - 4 min Caramujo - 6 min Dark Keep - 7 min Gome of the Bear 2 Much To Bear - 8 min Kovi Kovi - 11 min Penult - 4 min
  9. Oh. I thought this was about the whole conspiracy theory that Taylor Swift is part of a psyop to sway votes. And the Super Bowl is rigged to help make that happen. Seems crazy to ally yourself with people who tried to screw you out of money. I assume the who internet psyop thing is mostly some kind of four-Chan joke.
  10. Taylor Swift had to re-record all her masters. I highly doubt that she could be bought to participate in any rigging.
  11. The timing of this thing is very poor, and perhaps would be in violation of the AHA rules regarding disclosures of who you voted for or who you should votd for. The proper time to do this was on Dec 31, 2023. You could have opened a speculation thread about which games you hope to see nominated (might of even had influence over the committee). You could talk about the merits of whichever game you thought should be in which category. The other appropriate time would be after the awards show. You could argue about which game you thought should have won, or should have been nominated. This already sort of happens each year anyway.
  12. Caramujo is very fun, once you get past the idea that you are a snail, so you must go slow. It's like when you play Bionic Commando for the first time, and you realize that there isn't a jump button. It's frustrating at first, but soon you are grappling and swinging from platform to platform with ease.
  13. You can see them pictured here. Kidding aside, thanks to ZPH and the nomination committee for all the work out throughout the year that make the awards possible. The WIP Homebrew tracking threads are a great resource, and you guys put a lot of time in playing all the games to make the voting each year more manageable.
  14. @roots.genoa, I think there is several new ones. I think @ZeroPage Homebrew just picked up a PoWKiddy RGB30, which people might like because it has a square screen, supports integer scaling (720x720 screen), and HDMI out. Technically Zep, the creator of Pico-8, only supports Windows, Mac, Linux, and Raspberry Pi. So as long as the handheld is an ARM CPUs that is compatible with the raspbian build of Pico-8, it should work. If not, there are Pico-8 emulators like Fake-08. Other Atari ports Pitfall Pitfall II Combat (although it doesn't feel very 2600 combat to me) The great thing about all these Pico-8 games is that you can hit ESC at any time and examine the actual Lua source code to see exactly how the game was made. Make modifications yourself, experiment. Great learning environment, (also helps that Pico-8 is the most popular fantasy console, so lots of active help available on the forums). If you can't swing $15 for a license, Zep has made the online educational version free, which is only missing Splore, and a couple Export functions. (You only need an internet connection to startup the Pico-8 environment, after that it all runs in the browser, and you can save your game to your local hard drive) https://www.pico-8-edu.com/
  15. I wonder if Google Translate would work? You would unfortunately have to convert each page to an image first. (I thought that they also have a live app that translates images on the fly, but that would require your phone pointed at another screen that had the PDF open.)
  16. Yes. The Pico-8 fantasy console has a number of ports from Atari, Arcade, and early 8-bit computers. Although I usually play the games from the BBS / forum. Star Raiders Web Pilot (Tempest) Jungle Ping (Jungle King) Dinkey Kong (Donkey Kong) Lee Dragon’s Fury (Bruce Lee) Rampaging (Rampage) Defender Tutankhamen Thrust-1K
  17. The way it is handled in games like Air Hockey (GBA e-reader) is that pressing the button moves you at turbo speed. Normal movement is more precise.
  18. That's technically Tecmo Super Bowl, the sequel. The original only had 4 total plays, the sequel had 8 total (4 Pass / 4 Run) and a customisable playbook. But you can have the best of both worlds, and play Tecmo Super Bowl with updated rosters, thanks to the people at TecmoBowl.org who have been updating the rosters each year.
  19. Is there any reason the online instructions aren't good enough? https://atari.com/pages/ten
  20. I was planing on getting a PS4 or Xbox One. I have been trying to stay 2-3 generations behind. At least with systems, the best time to buy a console is during the same year the new console comes out. You get the lowest prices, can still find new units, and most of the hardware bugs have been worked out. I missed the boat on PS4 / Xbox One, as I think they stopped manufacturing new units in 2021. If I owned one, I would still mostly be playing retro. My newest systems are an Xbox 360 / PS3 (broken eject) / Wii. I have a handful of 20 / 4 / 15 games for the systems, but rarely play them.
  21. I expected as much, since the paddle capacitors need to be read almost every display line for accuracy. I would guess that if it wasn’t paddles, but instead joystick movement (with button presses for speed/slowdown) it could be possible.
  22. You could go crazy and make it 4 player using the interleaved 4-color backgrounds (Xevious homebrew). Not sure if that would leave enough time for paddle capacitor reading. if the screen was vertically situated you could make it 4-player doubles (2-color) with two players on the same team. Since at most you would have 4 “balls” (P0 M0 and P1 M1) over lapping each other in the major part of the playfield. I suppose at the very top/bottom ht has some issues if you wound up with a players “paddle” overlapping all 4 balls. Perhaps a standard “power-up” would be holding down the button. Upon contact the ball would move faster. Missed balls off the defending side would result in having to wait for a certain amount of time before a new ball is served (possibly with variations of increased waiting time for every ball missed)
  23. Fathom Rob Fulop, Michael Becker, and Wilfredo Aguilar Related, Imagic’s old address was displayed when freeing the mermaid for the 7th time.
  24. That's good news for me. I have a stack of GB/GBC boxes and instructions I need to unload. I was only expecting to get $1-$5 a piece, but if they are worth that much to resellers I should be able to get a decent price for each.
