I think Thomas Jentzsch was speaking of the ROM differences when compared to each other using CloneSpy or similar tool. Usually the point of these tools is to see what if anything might be different between different dumps of a cart. Greater difference is a good thing. It means that this particular version was likely not dumped before, and the other 98% similar versions are likely the same as each other with small graphical/insignificant changes. Tools like CloneSpy can be used to identify prototype carts that are significantly different than the official releases, or identify official releases that had changes after release that were never documented.

Circus Atari. Looks like I am going to have to bust out my Flashback 5 and my real paddles.

Oblivious. Ignore.

I like to play a game I call SoL. My original quote, and selective quote below (bold portion missing) Your comment only makes sense If you ignore the full quote. Even after I clarified, by including the entire quote, and clearly stated I was specifically taking about documenting build tools used to create the game, you seems to be oblivious. So take your pick. P.S. I will leave it as an exercise for the reader to determine how my other quote was twisted.

You twisted my words.

Why dont you think source code should at a minimum contain the version of the build tools used to create the binary? Not documenting that isnt a valid perspective.
-
It is not the responsibility of the maintainers of the build tools to make sure that all old software still compiles. Especially in this case, where the previous version was incorrectly handing a situation that should be an error. It is the responsibility of the Game Preservationists to make sure that the source code, the binaries, the tools, and the environments used to create the games are archived in such a way that someone could use that archive to recreate the game exactly as it was when originally produced. If Debro wasn’t being so kind to actually update the code to be correct, at a minimum the source code should contain comments containing the version of dasm (and the command line arguments) used to build the binary.

I think I found a pattern, sort of. I started to get bored and started making mistakes. CapitanClassic Spideroid - 18749

A version was created. If you want something better, you might have to make it yourself. http://www.atarimania.com/game-atari-2600-vcs-stunt-cycle_11881.html

Just to make sure we are on the same page, you aren’t playing me this round. I am not playing Condor Attack. Jason_Atari was correct about the shuffle of positions.

Bringing Atari Highscores into the 21st century
CapitanClassic replied to Klemen's topic in Atari 2600
Eventually, it would be nice to replace the vertical (my score) line with a different set of axis. Date (vert), Score (horz) - so you can see your improvement (or lack there of) over time. Maybe a rolling last 20-50 scores though, depending upon how long of a history you want to store in the database. Additionally, it would be nice to have how many standard deviations your highest score for a game variation (SqRT (Sum(ABS(X - Mean)) / Y data points)) is from the mean (Avg high score for all Players). I cannot think of any other interesting statistics to keep track of (maybe RageResets, but I don’t know if the PlusCart HS interface would track that information. -
No help to me. I will still be playing against Deteacher. Looks like I am going to be knocked out first round again. 😉

Season 10 ~ FINAL STANDINGS and AWARDS
CapitanClassic replied to Vocelli's topic in 2600 High Score Club
Favorite Game from Season 10 Frogs and Flies Cosmic Commuter The biggest reason I play in the HSC is it gives me the opportunity to try out some new games I haven’t played, or dedicate some time to mastering a game I haven’t rolled yet. This was the first time I had played either of these two games. I can see why F&F would be a great multiplayer game, and while CC isn’t exciting, I think this is a new game I could roll if I dedicated more time to playing it. Most Surprising Game from Season 10 Death Trap Rescue Terra I Two new games to me in the HSC. I liked Death Traps gameplay being much different than the normal shoot everything twitch gameplay of most VCS games. This game requires significant planning to make sure the holes in the shield stay relatively open. I liked Resuce Terra I, and would like to improve my score and get to some of the later ship types. *Worst Game from Season 10 Pac-man(NTSC) Condor Attack I don’t think I will ever again play the NTSC version of PAC-man. Usually for the HSC, I play the NTSC version, even though it usually means I have a 16% reaction time penalty as opposed to PAL players. With this particular game though, it appears as if the patterns for collecting the wafers doesn’t work, and the Ghosts move faster than their PAL equivalents, making it impossible to roll the game unless you are playing the slower PAL version. Even though I didn’t roll the game this season, I quit at 25k after the game didn’t get any harder. I have no desire to ever play the NTSC version of this game again (unless someone has discovered a way to roll the NTSC version). Condor Attack was a glitchy mess. Yuck! -

Season 10 ~ Week 23 ~ Beat The Leaders 2

31650 - CapitanClassic I know I can do better. Made a bad control mistake near the end when my finger slipped on the small arrow keys (probably should remap them). Playing PAL this time because I am slow. -
Todd Rogers banned from Twin Galaxies and records removed
CapitanClassic replied to HalHawkins's topic in Atari 2600
Twin Galaxies is just pulling the Lance Armstrong solution to cheating in competitions. If you cheated once, there is no way to know if any of your records are legit. (In Lance’s case, pretty much everyone in cycling was cheating, so he was still the best cyclist among all the cheaters) I think this sort of solution is probably the best when it comes to video game scores. (I think the speed running community does the same thing, doesn’t it?). Without solid proof of any score from Todd Rodgers I am inclined to not believe it. He has quite a few scores across many games that don’t appear to be possible to even score, or would require extremely long uninterrupted marathon play times. If Todd Rodgers would admit that he lied about some of his scores, and come clean about which ones he remembers he cheated on, I would be fine with allowing him to continue posting high scores. The way it currently stands, he expects us to believe his impossible scores, and is gaslighting us. (The denial is always worse than the crime) -
Is Atari 2600 programming "real-time"?
CapitanClassic replied to qah661's topic in Atari 2600 Programming
Wikipedia seems to think so https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Real-time_computing The Atari 2600 and the programs that run on them cam be considered a RTS. If the program fails to draw the screen at the appropriate time, the graphics will look garbled. If you fail to send a solid scanline count, the screen will jump and/or roll. Traditionally, what you would normally expect in a real-time multitasking system is some sort of scheduler that can guarantee that certain actions are completed within a certain time period ( AndrewDavie has a thread on his scheduler for Boulder Dash). The Atari 2600 isn’t a multitasking system though, and only needs to run the game ROM that it was intended run. As long as your game was programmed to complete all required tasks before it needs to draw the screen, it will not have failed in its real-time task. -
Just noticed in Andrew Davie's thread regarding the timeslicing used in Boulderdash, that the traditional synchronous way of handling game logic over multiple frames, is to hand-pick what to do on certain frames. There isnt anything new under the sun, any problems you encounter have likely been encountered and solved by others.

Not sure you could split up a 2600 game to more than 1 developer. Even the bigger teams for homebrew games maybe have a developer (maybe a guy who helps with optimization), and an art guy.

Season 10 ~ Week 23 ~ Beat The Leaders 2
CapitanClassic replied to Vocelli's topic in 2600 High Score Club
This will only be my second (or maybe third) season of playing every game during a season. I am glad I stuck through it, although I didn't have time to play many games more than a few times. I think my upcoming goals for the next season is to actually purchase a Harmony/PlusCart so I can play on some real hardware and also to actually get 10-20 completed games (minus any rage ressets) in each week.
