I get your sarcasm but I am surprised nonetheless given the fact that this is FPGA and not a pc running an emulator. Where it loads the binary data from shouldn’t be impacted like this I would think.  I wonder if the Mister has this problem on occasion. I wouldn’t be surprised to find out that it does the same thing.  I’m not sure how fast the data was transferred on an original NES through the 72pin connector but it can’t be faster than 2 MB/s.

I’ll go through Super Mario 3 again soon and pinpoint the spots where the slow down is occurring. It was very noticeable to me and a friend that I had over playing.

Like other folks have said, sometimes folks forget the original NES often had trouble with flicker and slow down in even super popular AAA titles.

Some emulators and fpga implementations allow you to "overclock" the emulators CPU and remove sprite limitations to reduce or even eliminate that slowdown. But that's not technically true to the real consoles behavior from back in the day.

The NT's are generally defaulted to playing at the standard speeds, timing, and sprite limitations (though you can tweak some of that in the advanced options).

    Fair enough.

Switching gears, does anyone know if an 8BitDo M30 2.4g controller can be paired to an 8BitDo TG16 Mini 2.4g USB receiver? I'm curious if I could pair the two for use on my Sega Genesis Mini, but can't seem to sync it up.

I know it's not actually an Analogue question, but since 8BitDo is essentially the official controller line for Analogue products, we obviously discuss 8BitDo regularly in here.

I remember reading on the forums at 8bitdo that the receivers are designed for the specific product. So generally you cannot mix and match them. 😞 super bummer.

    update on Parprium.

It does indeed play correctly now and it looks and sounds great! :-D

I am a very happy camper!

His reception is due solely to how he's chosen to handle himself here with his interactions with other members. Not because he's dared to point out faults with existing Analogue products.

Many of us have regularly pointed out areas that we've felt were lacking, games that were broken, extra features we'd like to see implemented, etc. But we've done so without an attitude, without aggression towards other members, etc.

I've seen several times in this thread folks told to go use a different product if it works better for them or makes them happier than the NT. I'm just saying not everyone saying those things is trying to bash the product or cause contention. Some genuinely want to see the product improve.

Can and should folks use decency and respect as they share their thoughts and experiences? Absolutely.

Did I applaud his earlier attitude? No.

He was chastised for it and from what I have seen in this thread he's dialed it back. Sticking to facts and objective comparisons.

    Hi,

I had a lengthy conversation with Kevtris about this yesterday on Discord.

I know folks have been giving you crap on here. But thanks for getting the word out there about ways the NT products can be improved.

Also, thank you Kevtris for listening to community feedback and making improvements! I’ll be giving Parprium a try on the newest firmware today!

I’m an engineer and something really agitating me is that some folks refuse to hear or accept any kind of criticism or improvement suggestions.

While it’s true no one has infinite time or money and it’s also true that sometimes the payoff is not worth the effort. It’s just as true that sometimes we as consumers end up with abandoned and inferior products simply because we didn’t have the time or desire to point out issues and ask for better.

I’m very happy with the full screen pixel effect in the new software. 🙂 It doesn’t matter to me if the person who drove the conversation stuck around to use it. 🙂

It’s going to be awesome if Paprium is fully working now. I literally held back my YouTube compatibility video when I saw it broken in the previous firmwares because I filed a bug with Analog and had faith in Kevtris that he wouldn’t let it go.

Criticism doesn’t always equal an attack or insult. It just means there are areas that could potentially be improved. If we plug our ears to it we block potential for understanding, progress, and improvement.

Soooo.  I hope I've properly encoded this question:

Preorders are open for a very expensive MVS flashcart, but I also feel Analogue may have me covered in that area.  It's almost 'more weird' that Analogue hasn't gone back to Neo Geo already, that'd be fair to say, right?

I'm reminded of a certain pricey lynx screen upgrade I preordered shortly before the pocket announcement

I've had my fun with it, but it was still a D'oh! moment.

I currently own a NEO SD MVS (which is what I assume you are talking about).

I also have a single slot jamma mvs arcade board with a supergun to HDMI. And I have two Neo Geo arcade sticks with competition buttons and stick custom installed.

It’s certainly not the cheapest route to go to just scratch the itch.

But if you want to plug the jamma board into a cabinet and play on a real arcade machine, I personally feel it’s worth it and a lot cheaper than getting a 2 or 4 slot MVS board and then buying individual carts.

I’m not going to plug my Analog consoles into my arcade cabinet. But I wouldn’t mind being able to load up roms on it from a jailbreak core if one ever became available.

I could be completely wrong, but I feel like the market for NEO GEO may be so small that the work required to provide support for it on Analog Consoles may just not be there or we may have to wait a crazy long time.

Then again we are getting a TG16 so... take with a grain of salt.

If mister can support it and you are cool with that, I say go with what works for you.

I feel like the SD cart (especially the MVS one) is aimed at folks determined to have a hardware cab or an arcade board consolized with a supergun.

  6. Almost there. I accepted the invite. Now I can see the channel and I can load the link given earlier but the analogue-mega-sg server shows a padlock icon and says it can't load the messages. :P

    UPDATE:
Hah. Figured it out by starting in the readme server. :)

Hahaha. That's okay. I am 42 but feel like I am 99 sometimes. Getting harder to keep up with technology. :)

Forgive me if this has already been discussed but has anything been mentioned in regard to getting Paprium running on a Mega SG via firmware updates or the like?  Mostly just curious if this is even possible to do with a firmware update, by other means, or even at all.  Has anything been said in the discord channels?

Llink for those whom aren’t familiar with Paprium

    http://www.paprium.com

I submitted a support ticket to Analog on their page and got this response:

I would suggest folks interested in seeing this working also submit tickets.

if only 2 people care about it I imagine it will be lower priority than if a lot of folks are affected by it.

I couldn't get my Nt Mini Noir to turn on using the controller--and I was worried it was defective somehow.

It turns out that there is a misprint in the small included manual. The manual says press "select" and "b" to turn on the console using the controller, but the actual combination is "select" and "a".

Also, it is pretty neat that other 8bitdo 2.4g controllers can be paired to the included N30 receiver. I just paired an M30 controller, which I love, but it's not so good for NES games because the A and B positions are reversed. Have not tried any of the extra cores yet, but it will hopefully button map well in the Sega cores.

Thanks so much for this. I’ve been getting up from the chair to turn the system on.

At least Sega CD works via Mega Everdrive Pro, including a few of the problem games that wouldn't work on the latest firmware with the Sega CD model 2, on Mega SD using the Sega CD 1 bios. Too bad I'm without a CRT currently so I can't play Lethal Enforcers in S-Video with the DAC until I move back in to the house (tornado knocked a tree into the back of the house).

Dude!? That’s crazy (tree on house). Hope everyone is ok.

I need to get around to trying Sega CD games with my Mega SD.

Also, pardon my ignorance. But what is the Analog DAC, what does it do?

I went to the analog page and just see an add to cart but no actual description.

As stated many times before.  I don't think anybody is taking umbrage with the idea that this would be a nice option to have for those that want it.  I'd personally never use it, but for those that want it, i'd be all for it.

    It's this nonsense:

all I get is emulation kids...

and from the artistic point of view that how they must look like

    A)  Not everyone plays games for either "preservation" or nostalgia.  I don't care about either of these things, so the games don't have to look any particular way that they looked 20 or 30 years ago.  That is not important to me even remotely.

    B) Not everyone who doesn't share your preference is an "emulation kid" whatever the hell that means.  First... there is nothing wrong with emulation if that is what people prefer.  Secondly, as many have stated we did in fact grow up playing these games on original hardware, this particular issue just isn't important to us, or at least not as important as it is to you.

It's ok for other people to have a different preference for how these games look, than you do.  It doesn't make them the philistines that you seem to be implying, the way you use emulation as a slur.

Personally i've seen all the arguments about dither blending in old games.  I'm willing to concede that some developers used it to their advantage, and may have intended the image to be seen with it.  I still think it's ugly and don't prefer it.  Sharp dithering looks preferable to me. 🤷‍♂️

    I agree with your sentiment.

Personal attacks and condescension are never helpful to ones argument.

I don’t want to assume I know Vanfanel’s mind and motivations so I will speak for myself here.

I know for myself. I want to preserve the original experience and look to the extent possible. Minus slowdown and flicker.

It’s frustrating to be told to be quiet and get over it because other folks are okay with “close enough” or “good enough”.

It makes sense those folks don’t want to keep discussing the matter. They already have what they want.

The problem with staying quiet about it is the company won’t see a desire or demand to go the extra mile and if they are smart, they aren’t wasting time on things that aren’t significantly important to their target customer base.

So being vocal is a way ensure there is some chatter out there indicating interest and demand.

This sort of thing has influenced many companies and products in the past. If done in high enough volumes and broadly enough it can make a difference and many more people can be happy.

He's been told this by multiple people many times.  At this point it's moved from being passionate about it, to just trolling.  Not because of the insistence that it should be an option that works a certain way... but for constantly berating anyone that doesn't prefer the look.

I grew up playing genesis over rf... it's ugly (just like anything else over rf), I don't prefer the smeared vaseline look, regardless of what the intent of the developers was.

    Personal preferences are fine.

His beef is legitimate. His personal preference is to see the game as it was originally designed to be presented back in the day. Currently the system does not give him that option.

Analog aims for accurately capturing the original console behavior and experience. In this way he feels (and I agree) it falls short of fully doing so.

I would also really like to see a full screen soft crt option for all the analog consoles similar to the mister.

Since none of that was ever promised by Analog, I won’t hold it against them if they never add it. But I’d still love to have it.

Could somebody help out with some barney-style instructions for my controller options on the NT Mini v2?

I just bought the new 8bitdo arcade stick, but that doesn't seem to pair with the new receiver. (both from questions asked on the amazon page, and my trying it).  Also my 2.4g m30 won't pair to it, which I suppose isn't too surprising if the former won't go.

My older NT Mini's bluetooth controller died a couple uses, so I don't fully trust my negative result on the new 8bitdo arcade stick using that. (there's a 50% chance the rx half is the dead half)  Anybody had this work? If so what's the magic dance, and is it running analogue nt firmware or the standard one? (IIRC that was 'a thing')

I nearly bought that arcade stick until I read two things in the QA section.

    1) you cannot pair it with their other 2.4g dongles (as you have now discovered for yourself)

    2) they only claim it supports PC and Switch

This is further verified in the customer questions and 8bitdo’s responses.

    Sorry friend. 😞

I also want to follow up on my earlier post about RetroUSB SMB2J being glitchy on the noir.

The cartridge locks up after a few minutes of play. But with the jail break firmware I was able to dump it and play the rom for quite a while with no lockup’s and no graphics glitches.

Does this mean my cart is bad? It’s not dirty. I guess I will have to try to dig out one of my OG NES consoles to double check the cartridge is not to blame. Was hoping someone here might already know, but that does not seem to be the case.

  14. Got my gun metal gray noir on Monday.

Enjoying it but found at least one game that gives it trouble. Anyone know if there are special settings I need to use for RetroZone SMB 2J to work right?

It plays almost fine but I get weird intermittent glitching while the screen is scrolling. Like clouds and blocks will repeat for just a frame or two then disappear (I can grab video).

  15. Stephena, fluxit, And dirtyhairy thanks for your work.

I haven’t gone through this entire thread but I have two questions:

    1) anyone else actively contributing to getting Stella 6 up and running on Retron77?

    2) I see how to donate to Stephena. Is there any way to donate to the others I mentioned?

  16. No one complains that NES and SNES emulators cover all sorts of add-on chips and processors and stuff those systems use in their cartridges. Nobody argues that a Super-FX game shouldn't be called a SNES game.

Thank you. Exactly what I have been thinking this entire time.

  17. Hah, neat!

Now I just need to get their posted build environment/toolchain to stop arguing with me and compile, and maybe I can change that stupidly useless 'Fry button' to be an actual 'reset' ...

That button was very useful for compelling me to read the manual. I was like wtf is fry?

Then I read the manual and was like “oh, okay. ... why would I want this?”
