  1. This is curiosity talking here, no implied complaint or anything. But I'm wondering what exactly you mean by "need to play the games like Ferg's 2600 podcast"? Do you mean that Ferg's presentation motivates you to go play? Or something else?

Yes. After listening to Ferg's podcast, and your too Rick for that matter, I'm motivated to play those games, especially if I have never played them or haven't played them in a long time. I guess my brain was working faster than my hands when I typed the original post! :)

  2. After having listened to their first podcast for the 5200, I enjoyed it alot. It's thorough like the Intellivisionairies, with a great interview like Antic, and the need to play the games like Ferg's 2600 podcast! That said, I hope it lasts way longer than the previous 5200 podcast as that one was too short-lived unfortunately. In the meantime, I think I'll have to revisit some of those 5200 games... :)

  3. I'm just here for the free ROMs and nothing else, but while I'm adding my 2 cents, I think it's a little dramatic to get upset for posting a reply from a company about a request. I don't really see what the big deal is. But if you want to get all upset because of it I guess that's your choice. After all, no harm was done in asking for permission to release the ROM. Eric is right that life is too short. It's also too short to get mad over things that don't mean a hill of beans!

To clarify, the 60 built-in games work great and there are several original Atari 2600 games that work great (and probably some homebrews), but there will be disappointment with several notable titles not working. They either don't load at all or have corrupted visuals or missing hit detection, etc. I'm personally disappointed in Berzerk not working. It loads and seems to run fine, but you can't fire the gun, except sporadically. That's a strange one. Galaxian has no hit detection when you shoot the enemies. Etc. On the other hand, games like the original Space Invaders and Pac-Man seem to work perfectly fine.

Interesting. I would love to know if there is anyway to play Defender 2/Stargate because it requires two fire buttons. Have you had any success with Activision games, most notibly Chopper Command, Enduro, H.E.R.O., Pitfall, River Raid, & Robot Tank?

All true. Unfortunately, it looks like compatibility is not amazing via the SD card slot. Maybe 80% of the library is compatible, maybe less. It seems it struggles over SD with software that not only uses special chips, but also special display modes and other "non-standard" effects. While the Atari Flashback Portable uses the most powerful hardware yet in an AtGames product, the software layer is still pretty much the same as it is on the Atari Flashback 7.

What the 2017 version of the hardware will look like, I'm not sure. We're changing hardware platforms for all the console stuff after the previously announced releases for this year, but it's uncertain at this time whether that will apply to the portables.

Based on what you are saying, we shouldn't get our hopes up on the games it may or may not play as this it's full of bugs. Sounds like most homebrew games will not work which will be a shame because the idea would be to expand our Atari library instead of being limited like this one obviously is. Here's to hoping things improve over time on the software side.

  6. Cool they included it. What's the ROM list for the portable? Is it the full 101 games?

The ROM list for the portable hasn't been released yet. That is what we are waiting for during the next press release. Bill did say the portable will have only 60 games, but it will include an SD card slot to play ROMs we add so really the number of games in the system will be irrelevant at this point. ;-)

It hasn't come up in discussions, so I don't believe there are any exclusives this time. The game counts should be the same for everyone: Classic Console/Portable = 80, Atari Flashback 7 = 101, and Atari Flashback Portable = 60.

I suggested doing a press release announcing all of the retail partners, but I'm not sure that's still going to happen.

What is th difference between the classic console portable and the Atari portable?

Actually, MSRP is usually $60. It typically retails for $40. It's quite possible that retail price will be $50 for this go round. It's all on what the retailers set. There's some wiggle room for them, and I'm sure we'll see the usual holiday promotions where it will be quite a bit less.

Also, for what it's worth, I was given all of the review hardware late last week. I won't be able to post any reviews though until I'm allowed to. The hardware is final, but there still may be some tweaks to the final game lists that are present in my hardware.

There's also a surprise in the works for later in the year, which I'm of course not allowed to say. Nevertheless, it looks like this year it won't just be the four hardware products publicly revealed already. I'll try to let everyone know when the reveal for that is coming.

Ok for the record (and to torture my brain while I try to figure out what this additional product is before it's revealed) the four publicly revealed products are:

    1. Atari Flashback 7

    2. Atari Portable

    3. Sega Portable (with saving functions)

    4. ?

What is 4? I'm assuming you are talking about At Games only releases so this can't include the infamous Nintendo Flashback?

You can play virtually every intellivision game with a dual analog type controller or computer keyboard, if you take the time to remap the buttons specific to some of these games. I had baseball, b-17 bomber, tron deadly discs working pretty well with dual thumbsticks. Treasure of tarmin would work nicely with buttons mapped to the keyboard (eg. 'o'-open 'l'-ladder). You can easily map a dual action controller, especially if you have the right thumbstick working as eight buttons. One game where I really needed the disc was Auto Racing. Another problem was that I'm use to using my right thumb for direction control but all modern controllers are left-handed.

I played Intellivision Lives on my PC like that for years, but now with the flashback controllers being much better than the original controller, I wouldn't ever want to use the keyboard again. I have those to thank that created the usb adapters. IMO, using a joystick and a keyboard is too much work!

  10. Wow. I just discovered both Surround and this Tron hack version and I am addicted. This Tron version, is it any different than Surround other than the colors? It seems harder or am I crazy?

Where can I get a ROM for this Surround Tron Hack?

  11. 2, 2+, etc can be modded.

3-onwards are similar to each other- I'd just grab the newest or least expensive from this line (unless you're looking for a specific game).

The first flashback has a few 7800 games and is the least popular of the bunch.

The portable is the way to go. SD slot and composite out means you can play most anything on the big screen, no mods required.

Is there a way to use actual joysticks on the big screen or do you have to use the built in controller?
