Am I right in thinking the shaft is stainless steel? Any idea if the shaft can be removed as there are ways of getting it back to shiny with vinegar and a polish...

Iv just bought one of these that im looking to restore myself :-) iv got the same prob as you that the shaft is rusted and the feet have been picked off, where did you get the parts from?
