SUB HUNTER on C64, now ported to CPC... When A8 version?
andym00 replied to José Pereira's topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
I'd just do it like an initial dx, and a per scanline delta change then just use an 8.8 fixed point number: dx_curr += dx x += dx_curr line_xpos = x; And then it really quite flexible.. Or are you thinking more Mode7 kind of thing -

Ah, good old Star Ray That'd look gone on the A8, and nice and simple to do.. Though I reckon you could make it look way better than the ST -

That's kind of what I was thinking, and it's something I've wanted to see done for a good long time.. Bitmap, and then have pre-compiled scanline sprites for each foreground object, then the x lookup becomes nice and simple and just able to jump to the function to render the correct shifted scanline of the sprite out taking into account the adjusted scrolled line position.. There's a couple of nice 64 demos, where the interleave is chosen nicely so there's a good overlap, but I reckon the A8 could do a much nicer job of it, and still have sprites on top being useful in a game rather than just some fancy arsed demo effect -

You would think so wouldn't you, but on something infinitely scrollable like that how're you going to do that without it dissolving into a big pixely mess ? I'd love to know how you'd improve it, because I'm a big lover of nice parallax effects, but don't see how you could reasonably do that any better in the A8 whilst still maintaining the same ? Seeing thinhs in a simple way, isn't this different direction/speed many scrollers like in many Demos or the Frogger different creatures/Gfxs way? It is, but I was curious was Heaven had in mind since the landscape contains craters (and things) that are a few charlines high, so simply scrolling each scanline individually isn't going to be so good since things would have to be scrolled at intervals of the object height otherwise it'd break down completely graphically.. Scrolling each scanline seperately with a nice repeatable background on it and then rendering the craters on top taking into account the skewed lines it sits over would be awesome though Proper parallax -

My thoughts regarding recent suspensions
andym00 replied to therealbountybob's topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
lol, really I don't care what happened before.. The point is simply that I think this particular circumstance was deliberately escalated and pursued to its inevitable conclusion.. It was fox hunt, nothing more, nothing less.. -
There was this old thread for 1200XL serials: http://www.atariage.com/forums/topic/107234-1200xl-owners-club-serial-tracker/

My thoughts regarding recent suspensions
andym00 replied to therealbountybob's topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
I sincerely third that.. Much as he reacts badly sometimes there are those that enjoy poking him with a stick to see what reaction they'll get.. I've had my disagreements with him in the past, but that doesn't alter the fact that I do hold him in a technical high regard.. It's a shame to see him booted for what was tantamount to a circle of people stood around poking a snake with a pointy stick and then complaining when they got bit.. Makes me a bit sad actually.. -

Pokey Version of "Unreal Superhero 3" By Kjmann
andym00 replied to Kjmann's topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
Hmm hadn't realized that was using dual SIDs... Don't be misled.. It's not using Dual SIDs, it's just more disinformation from the Emkay propaganda broadcast system -
Absolutely not spam at all!! I love his posts too, as do I suspect a lot of the programmers who (if like me) love his enthusiasm for wanting to produce something(s) really good that actually does justice to the machine.. I find them often fairly though provoking on how to go about things.. I'd love if he learnt to program 6502 and was capable of turning a lot of his ideas into something more solid, but either way the A8 forum wouldn't be the same without his latest master-plan of converting something that went beyond the regular 160x100 3 colour screens.. I just love his unwavering determinism that you just can't knock.. Wish I had a bit more of that if I'm honest And I look forward to the day he rolls out the first thing he has been beavering away on, because I have very high hopes that it's going to be something damned good looking

Now that's very interesting indeed

Text Editor Design Considerations
andym00 replied to flashjazzcat's topic in Atari 5200 / 8-bit Programming
Quick macros.. Juts record a sequence of keystrokes (at a low level), then allow it to be played back in a form such that anything that responds to a key-press usually gets stuffed from the recorded sequence.. Kind of the same as Visual Studio allows.. I fined this incredibly useful and something I find myself missing in a lot of editors.. Edit: Oh, and a 53 column mode in regular 320 wide mode, or a 64 column mode in 384 mode At least something using a 6 pixel wide font that's easy in the eyes -
What is the real core of ATARI's 6502C CPU
andym00 replied to GoodByteXL's topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
On the NMOS versions the 6502 registers are dynamic, if the CPU is halted to long it forgets the register contents, that's were the dummy memory fetches are used, to refresh the internal registers.. I think that applies only to the NMOS ones actually, since they by definition would be dynamic rather than static, hence the limits on minimum clocks speeds and the amount of time Phi2 could be held low.. I guess the 65C02 won't have that problem since it'll be a static chip, but earlier NMOS(dynamic) would.. -
Between my 1701, 1702 & 1084 I think there's not going to be a problem displaying it.. I do agree that having an NTSC 800 would be the best solution though, it's just a question of finding one at the right price with shipping not being insane.. For now I'll take the CPU board change option as an interim solution, and just keep an eye out for NTSC 800s..
-
But I'm crap with a soldering iron so the $15 cost of the CPU board saves any innocent computers getting injured in the process..
-
The PAL 800s are staying, I like them too much, and the NTSC requirement is something that'll be needed not too often..m Much as that'd be the simpler solution buying an NTSC 800, shipping is not going to be trivial.. I did think of this first actually, but then stumbled across the CPU boards on Best.. When I enquired about the cost of shipping their NTSC 800s to the UK, the answer was not promising due to the weight and I quote "Because of the very heavy nature of the original Atari 800 computers Andy, they are not cost effective to ship to the UK".. Although the price is good, (~80UKP), shipping is going to be bonkers.. For now, and because I want to keep an 800 as a PAL machine, I'll grab a couple of CPU boards and do the dirty conversion like this, and keep an eye out for an NTSC 800 turning up on eBay UK or somewhere closer..

I cannot believe that this is true!... Or is it?
andym00 replied to José Pereira's topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
I know this was too good to be true for a real stock old A8 Machine (there's no way to act 1/2 colour clock in a stock XL/XE, no-one ever get it, it must be impossible, or maybe someone someday will get it!...) Crazy me to believe... José Pereira. (How the hell to post this into that Thread at AtariOnline... we were talking about A8 vs C64 and this is supposed to be in real Machines, not todays/future Add-On) As long as the sprites are moving in a horizontal direction, then you can interlace the sprites to obtain a pseudo hires sprite.. This has been done in 64-land to give pseudo 640 resolution scrollers and things, although there's no reason you couldn't apply the same logic to a sprite that was moving on screen at a constant speed in a game.. -
I don't think I'll be doing anything other than booting it from a flash cart, so the keyboard and cassette IO aren't important to me.. As long as it'll fire up a cart I'll be a happy bunny
-
Sounds promising and worth a quick try at least.. It's only for testing my own stuff on, and it'd be purely an occasional testing thing, rather than shipping a 400 or 800 from the states that's likely to arrive in more pieces than it departed in.. The clock rate will be close enough, and being slightly slower is better than slightly faster.. As long as it'll display on one of the commodore monitors I've got, then no worries.. I assume the 400/800 ROMs won't have a problem with this though ? I mean they check the region and handle things somewhat correctly if it finds an NTSC Antic ? All excited now
-
Just wondering if I was to obtain a couple of NTSC CPU boards from Best if that's all I'd need to convert my 400 & 800 from PAL to NTSC ? Is it really that simple ? Just pop it in ? Or are there other clock shenanigans to take into account that'll bite me ?

Digital Joysticks provide better control than Analog Joysticks
andym00 replied to atariksi's topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
How did the old Atari-8bit tablets work though ? Seriously I was eyeing a few on ebay, and couldn't find programming info, and was wondering if they're in fact just sending the XY position via the pot channels.. -
Awesome stuff, not what I was expecting at well when I just idly passed by the ST/TT forum and clicked this

How many of us have real A8 Machines?
andym00 replied to José Pereira's topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
800xl 65xe 130xe XEGS 400 800 in transit.. All stock, the way god intended imho -
Are there any A8 games using such a cartridge setup ? I know the Corina Cart offers this (and more), but is there anything that ever shipped commerically in cart form using such a RAM/ROM setup ? Or even any PCBs for such a cart ?
