  1. I’m looking for 16 bit era side scrolling beat-em-up recommendations. I have the Streets of Rage series, Final Fight CD and TMNT for the Genesis/SCD and Final Fight 2, Super Double Dragon and TMNT IV for the SNES. I have had all these for years and am looking for something new. Please tell me some of your favorites from back in the day!

Well, there's the Golden Axe games for the Genesis/Mega Drive, though I guess they would technically be considered hack n' slash. But they pretty much play just like the games you mentioned.

I don't know if "Mutant Rampage" is a joke or not. If I ever get a CDi, is that worth seeking out?

I have heard of the Golden Axe series but never played it. And I have them on Steam (Genesis collection), so I can try them out legit. Thanks snakeboy!

Golden Axe is good, uses the same engine as the Streets of Rage series, but the early ones have not-all-that great control response on real hardware (one of the 1st genesis games though, so what the heck its pretty good for what it is.)

  2. I was playing Space Invaders for the 5200 and turned on the radio, Hall & Oates "You Make My Dreams Come True" came on after commercial. Good synergy here...

  3. Is there usually a long turnaround time when ordering from the “intellivisionlives” webstore?

  4. Picked up the 7800 "Space Invaders" from the Atari Age store. Came in yesterday… played for several hours throughout the day. Good stuff and now my favorite classic console port of the game…

Glad you enjoy it! PacManPlus does most excellent work with his arcade ports!

You should try the 7800 Frogger port! It's tops!

    3. DiscoDr.Bones

      DiscoDr.Bones

Frogger is one of my favorite games of all time. I have been following the thread on Froggie and I'm sure I will pick it up when it comes available.

  5. Had no prior experience with Origin, but a lot of older games (Crysis series in particular) that I wanted to play again. So a quick chat with their support and minutes later, Origin account created and all my old EA games on it. I’m anti DRM, but that is as good as it gets as far as customer service goes…

Honestly I'm not the biggest fan of Origin, but they have the free games which are always nice to have and it's the only way to get some of the EA titles so I deal with it.

      Bad Blood, very underrated game

      MrMaddog

My advice is to always start the Origin client first since it has to have huge updates and you need it running to play the EA games anyway. Launching the games directly is a bad idea IMHO since Origin takes forever to load up. I do use it for mainly for the RPGs (both original Origin & Bioware)

  6. I have gone through 3 Epyx 500XJ’s in the last 2 years… moderate to heavy usage several times a week. Is this normal with that model or do I have bad luck? I like it otherwise…

    1. atarian63

      atarian63

Kinda normal we used to get a lot of returns on these, could be age of the plastic in the switches too

  7. Been playing a lot of "Broforce" lately. It is a great homage to 80's action movie culture and a fun run-and-gun game as well!

    1. BurritoBeans

      BurritoBeans

Yeah, Broforce is a pretty fun game. I wish there were a few more games like it, the closest I know at this point is the Hotline Miami series (Both are published by Devolver like Broforce, too) but those are top-down, not side-view.

  8. (Im) Patiently waiting for Rayman Legends to be released on GOG.

  9. I'm pumped that I'm going to be able to attend PRGE this year... the last time I was able to go was 2011!

      retrorussell

I'll be there for the first time. And I live near Portland! I got no excuse not to go.

  10. Normally when playing Centipede in the arcade, I can post scores > 100K. Picked up the game and a trackball for the 5200, I’m only posting around 25K. Either I’m WAY out of practice or they gave that 5200 spider some Brazilian Bump and a homing device then said you are the guy who squished his mother…

Hey Defender_2600, I haven't tried it yet... I'll have to give it a shot.

    3. NE146

      NE146

I had the opposite experience with Space Dungeon.. level 9 no problem on the 5200 version.. tried the arcade version and couldn't make it past the first couple levels.

  11. Was out this weekend, came home to one of my recently purchased Best Reconditioned 5200 controllers in pieces, seems that the kid felt it wasn’t working correctly and she thought she could fix it. Not sure what I’m going to do about this one...

and travistouchdown, that's what the circumstances were for a long time, but as she was getting older I was becoming more lenient about letting her in when I wasn't around. Provided that there are no shortages or quotas (the two 5200 controllers were my first ever purchase from Best only month ago) I'm glad to be out only $50. Could have been a lot worse.

    3. OldSchoolRetroGamer

      OldSchoolRetroGamer

No doubt the kid was confused "It doesn't center? Must be broken!" an honest mistake....

    4. jaybird3rd

      jaybird3rd

Tough call. It's too bad about the controller, but on the other hand, you don't necessarily want to discourage the impulse to open things up and fix them and see how they work. Too few kids today have that kind of curiosity and hands-on approach.

  12. I have decided that an Xbox One with Kinect @ $300 is the price point in which I would be willing to take plunge. Gonna happen in 2016? Ever??

Yes there have been and I almost pulled the trigger once, but I got a GTX 970 instead.

      DiscoDr.Bones

Buying them separately over time would lessen the blow a bit, but the family demands Kinect if I get one, but I won't do it at $450 total.

You tried Cowboom? That'll get you your cheap rerun machine.

  13. Managed to make a pretty good trade today… got rid of a spare Model 2 Genesis and a few controllers for a working 130XE and power supply. Still passing memory test more than an hour later… I feel like I got away with robbery…

  14. Among the list of things your local network admin is likely unwilling to address in 2015: complaints that your online media provisions are too slow from a user accessing the internet via dial-up...

Whether they want to hear it or not, it's still a valid concern. The number of dial-up users is dwindling, but there are still a lot of them.

    3. simbalion

      simbalion

I'm still stuck on dial-up. Not by choice, but because there is nothing else available for my (one!) mile or road!

    4. DiscoDr.Bones

      DiscoDr.Bones

So you would be a good group of people to ask then… we do offer 64Kbs AAC downloads of everything we broadcast and break long segments up specifically for low bandwidth users… do you on dial up find that unacceptable?

  15. So I got my first reasonably good score for the XE version of Choplifter (62 saved. 1 chopper lost) and all I got was a "The End." Is that really all to the game?

    1. MegaManFan

      MegaManFan

As I remember it, yeah. It's not especially rewarding - it's all in the gameplay.

I have spent months off and on just getting to that point and enjoy the game thoroughly, but yea, I was expecting more levels... or something...

    3. SoulBlazer

      SoulBlazer

Correct, the original computer version of the game only has one stage. Your goal is to save all 64 hostages. The later arcade version made by Sega and ported the SMS had stages.

  16. Out of the blue, my G/F asked me why I didn’t have a ColecoVision, I responded that no one I knew had one growing up, so I don’t think I had ever played one, but that it was on my radar as an “eventual.” She smiled and said “ok.” I’m calling that consent…

That would be super cool. She is really supportive of me getting something like that it if she has any level of familiarity with it, but this is the first time she has mentioned ColecoVision.

Wait on it in case CPUWIZ is right, but either way hang on to this one, she's a keeper

      SoulBlazer

I did pretty well also....about $30. Picked up Civ 5, the two Batman games, and some minor stuff.

    2. goldenegg

      goldenegg

I only spent about $30. I was really hoping for 40%+ off Dying Light. Guess I'll have to wait for the holiday sale.

    3. DiscoDr.Bones

I picked up Ikaruga, Another World and random DLC's. None of the stuff I was really after got much of a discount either...

I have heard really good things about Realsports Baseball for the 5200 from other sources as well. It's going to be near the top of my list when I get a 5200...

  20. Whenever I come into possession of an older game system that I haven’t played since back in its day, I always try to give it a pretty significant run under the circumstances of the time. So in the case of an Atari 7800, proline controllers, an RF connection to my CRT and original published carts. This is partially nostalgia, but it also helps me greater appreciate what the community has managed to do when I add custom controllers, an S-video mod and homebrew carts in the not too distant...

In my younger and more vulnerable years my father gave me some advice that I’ve been turning over in my mind ever since.

“Whenever you feel like criticizing any one,” he told me, “just remember that all the people in this world haven’t had the advantages that you’ve had.”

He didn’t say any more, but we’ve always been unusually communicative in a reserved way, and I understood that he meant a great deal more than that. In conseque...

Call me Ishmael. Some years ago never mind how long precisely having little or no money in my purse, and nothing particular to interest me on shore, I thought I would sail about a little and see the watery part of the world. It is a way I have of driving off the spleen, and regulating the circulation. Whenever I find myself growing grim about the mouth ; whenever it is a damp, drizzly November in my soul ; whenever I find myself involuntarily pausing before coffin warehouses, and brining up t...
