  1. Hey, I just want to jump in here... I just got a 5200 myself and am waiting on Best's CX52 controllers to come in… the controller I have works ok most of the time, but I am still anxiously waiting to give the Best upgrades a try… they seem to be very highly regarded. Some of the multiplatform games from the era seem to have a unique personality on the 5200… I say it’s worth the money and trouble to deal with the controllers to experience these games once your setup is operational. Hope you stick with it!
  2. I bought a power supply modded 4 port 5200 from Mylok on ebay (he is on there as glennfre) The price was right, the product exceed expectations and he had it at my place in two days. I will be doing business with him again and would encourage you do to the same.
  3. I've been wondering about that 5200 trackball. I have never seen one in person... do you pretty much need to use it on a table top? Or is it reasonably comfortable on the lap?
  4. Thanks stardust4ever, as it turns out, I did pick up a copy of Pac-Man collection and I can confirm that the one I received is the older variant. Nonetheless, it has easily been the most played game in my household for the last month or so. I'm especially impressed by the sound... I have to plead a level of ignorance here, but as I understand it and have observed, the 7800 games are a bit notorious for poor sound due to the usage of the 2600 sound chip... but man... comparing the sound of Pac Man Collection to what any of the 2600 games I know sound like... it isn't even a contest. I don't believe that to be the same sound chip, but I know it has to be. That’s quite amazing. Also, for what it is worth, while the spoiler button did work here on the forum, it didn’t do anything to cover the text that was in the e-mail, which I read first. =)
  5. Among the list of things your local network admin is likely unwilling to address in 2015: complaints that your online media provisions are too slow from a user accessing the internet via dial-up...

    1. jaybird3rd

      jaybird3rd

Whether they want to hear it or not, it's still a valid concern. The number of dial-up users is dwindling, but there are still a lot of them.

    2. simbalion

      simbalion

I'm still stuck on dial-up. Not by choice, but because there is nothing else available for my (one!) mile or road!

So you would be a good group of people to ask then… we do offer 64Kbs AAC downloads of everything we broadcast and break long segments up specifically for low bandwidth users… do you on dial up find that unacceptable?

  6. Hey All, I'm new enough to the 5200 that I don't have a good concept as to if the asking price is reasonable here: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Atari-5200-System-Wico-Command-Control-Joystick-and-Keypad-Combo-CASE-FRESH-NEW-/231579980186?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item35eb3e119a At $280 for the combo new, that looks to be about 50% more than if I found them used separately, but I have to admit that I have not spent all that much time looking, and I'm not sure how reliable the 5200 Wico is "well used." It is worth mentioning that I do plan on getting this setup eventually even if I don't go for one of these now. Any insight you have will be greatly appreciated. Thanks
  7. So I got my first reasonably good score for the XE version of Choplifter (62 saved. 1 chopper lost) and all I got was a "The End." Is that really all to the game?

    1. MegaManFan

      MegaManFan

As I remember it, yeah. It's not especially rewarding - it's all in the gameplay.

I have spent months off and on just getting to that point and enjoy the game thoroughly, but yea, I was expecting more levels... or something...

    3. SoulBlazer

      SoulBlazer

Correct, the original computer version of the game only has one stage. Your goal is to save all 64 hostages. The later arcade version made by Sega and ported the SMS had stages.

  8. Out of the blue, my G/F asked me why I didn’t have a ColecoVision, I responded that no one I knew had one growing up, so I don’t think I had ever played one, but that it was on my radar as an “eventual.” She smiled and said “ok.” I’m calling that consent…

      CPUWIZ

I bet she is going to buy you one.

That would be super cool. She is really supportive of me getting something like that it if she has any level of familiarity with it, but this is the first time she has mentioned ColecoVision.

Wait on it in case CPUWIZ is right, but either way hang on to this one, she's a keeper

  9. Hey, I just wanted to chime in on this. I would jump on a Wii U @ $100. Largely for the same reasons Retrogamer81081 mentioned... I also feel like Nintendo has the best first party games, even if they do lean towards family friendly. I picked up mine with New Super Mario Bros WiI U in 2013 and have just about every first party game. Now with Splatoon, I feel like the system has a legitimate contender for "best of" for almost every genre. Go for it...
  10. Managed to survive the Monster Summer Steam Sale down only a tenner or so. I'm getting better....

      SoulBlazer

I did pretty well also....about $30. Picked up Civ 5, the two Batman games, and some minor stuff.

    2. goldenegg

      goldenegg

I only spent about $30. I was really hoping for 40%+ off Dying Light. Guess I'll have to wait for the holiday sale.

I picked up Ikaruga, Another World and random DLC's. None of the stuff I was really after got much of a discount either...

  11. All this information is much appreciated. I have a reasonable amount of experience soldering and for what I don't have in experience I have in locals who are willing to help. What I was/am more concerned about is finding a setting that would allow me to set it and still have broad enough compatibility that the girlfriend can put in a cart of her choice (usually Pac-Man or Q-bert) regardless of what I was doing before or the setting I had it on and it would still play without problem or needing my tech support. =) ProWzard and Paul have convinced me that this is very likely the case. I REALLY like what I saw from Ctirad's posts. I have been eying getting a second Atari 8-bit computer, probably a 130XE, and if he gets the issues fixed with Paypal, I would be very interested in checking out his RAM320XE upgrade. That's another story for another day...
  12. I spend far too much time figuring out what I want to do with money I don't have...

      That sounds very familiar...

  13. Hi Citrad, Were you able to resolve the paypall issues? Are there any alternate ways to order this from you? Thanks and glad to hear that you are doing better!
  14. I kind of did the same thing as reklen not too long ago... coming from the 8-bit computer system as my go to Atari in recent years, I picked up a very reasonably priced 5200 with some games, the contoller works good enough for now, but I want to get some of the Best 5200 controllers. Glad to hear that they are so well acclaimed...
  15. I have an 800XL, no modifications that I am aware of. I would like to be able to upgrade the memory of it so that I can load some of the more intense demos/games from Sio2sd or an Atarimax cart. (Mario Bros. Mean 18+, Crossbow, other XE games..) Is the Ultimate 1MB Revised 2k14 my best choice? If so, Is the mod pretty much “set it and forget it” if all you are doing is playing games on the system? Or do you find yourself having to modify parameters quite a bit and if so, what are the circumstances behind that? I ask because I have less technically inclined gamers in the household who get cranky if they want to play Pac-Man and it doesn’t work…
  16. Hi Aerron, It is actually a pretty common issue with modern HDTV's, which can take a lot of time to upscale and process the picture before actually displaying it. Have you looked into seeing if it has a "Gaming" mode? That would be the first thing I would check...
  17. I forgot how terrible Realsports Baseball for the 7800 was until I played a game last night. Any baseball recommendations for the 2600/7800/8-bit?

    1. DoctorTom

      DoctorTom

Home Run is the biggest joke of a baseball game ever. Super Challenge Baseball for 2600 is outstanding.

      Nutsy Doodleheimer

Realsports Baseball for the 5200 is the best baseball game from Atari ever!

    3. DiscoDr.Bones

      DiscoDr.Bones

I have heard really good things about Realsports Baseball for the 5200 from other sources as well. It's going to be near the top of my list when I get a 5200...

  18. Whenever I come into possession of an older game system that I haven’t played since back in its day, I always try to give it a pretty significant run under the circumstances of the time. So in the case of an Atari 7800, proline controllers, an RF connection to my CRT and original published carts. This is partially nostalgia, but it also helps me greater appreciate what the community has managed to do when I add custom controllers, an S-video mod and homebrew carts in the not too distant...

In my younger and more vulnerable years my father gave me some advice that I’ve been turning over in my mind ever since.

“Whenever you feel like criticizing any one,” he told me, “just remember that all the people in this world haven’t had the advantages that you’ve had.”

He didn’t say any more, but we’ve always been unusually communicative in a reserved way, and I understood that he meant a great deal more than that. In conseque...

Call me Ishmael. Some years ago never mind how long precisely having little or no money in my purse, and nothing particular to interest me on shore, I thought I would sail about a little and see the watery part of the world. It is a way I have of driving off the spleen, and regulating the circulation. Whenever I find myself growing grim about the mouth ; whenever it is a damp, drizzly November in my soul ; whenever I find myself involuntarily pausing before coffin warehouses, and brining up t...

  19. I appreciate the welcome. The main catalyst for attempting to get my 7800 back was seeing all the good reviews of the homebrews in the store here, especially Pac Man Collection, Beef Drop and Space Invaders, all of which I intend to pick up in the not too distant future. I do have a related question... I noticed that PacManPlus posted a 2012 version of the "Pac Man Collection" game, differentiated as the "small dot" version. Is this the one I would get if I buy it here at the AtariAge store? --Mike
  20. Hi There, I have been following this forum for a long time, extremely impressed with what people are doing with the 7800s and the amount of dedication to the system here, especially in regards to projects like the XM and custom joystick builds. I had a 7800 growing up… borrowed in the early 90’s but not returned to me until this weekend, with a collection of about 20 games, but no controllers. Anyway, been having a blast playing the games that I can with 2600 controllers and looking forward to more conversation with you all in the future. --Mike
  21. Hi There, If anyone has a couple of known working Proline joysticks taking up space in your closet and you would like to get rid of them, I would gladly buy them off you. I'm getting tired of buying them off ebay or garage sales, finding them non-working and then parting them to end up with only slightly less non-working sticks. Thanks, --Mike
  22. Hey, I found this post while considering (pre-purchase) the exact same thing it looks like SegaSaturn did, picking up a 520stfm from Best Electronics, and like the OP, I come with no prior ST experience. So I would like to get some technical/gaming clarification that might help the both of us out. Is the “Atari 520STE / 1040STE / MegaSTE 1 Meg 30 pin upgrade SIMM Memory” what one would get to bring the memory up to a meg? Is this process similar to a RAM swap/upgrade in today’s computers? If not, can someone point us in the right direction? Finally, since I haven’t actually made a purchase yet, is there a better route to go if I am looking for the broadest compatibility with games? Thanks,
  23. Hi All, When looking around at Atari sites, I notice so many different versions of the same game (such as Centipede) and then within the different versions, different revisions. Normally, the difference between versions are clear, such as the two different versions of Dig Doug. When it comes to revisions within a version, things get confusing. Some are clear and obvious hacks when you run them (such a screen that say "provided by" or games that give cheating options) but others are not so clear. In one game I played, it seemed like the difficulty was greatly reduced in one of the revisions My goal, if it is possible, is to try and play a game (be it on an emulator or MyIDE II) exactly as it is on the cart/disk/tape that I may pick up from Ebay or one of you in the future. So what I’m wondering is if there are any hard or soft general rules I can follow to try and make sure that what I’m playing matches what I’ll be getting on the cart? Like perhaps the .XEX with the smallest file size, etc… ? Are they most likely dumps by different people, with different headers and the like? Is there any software to compare headers of games to known headers/dumps so that I understand what I have? Or perhaps, as a general rule, are these revisions not different enough to warrant any concern? At the same time, I understand some of the people here on this forum have worked very hard to create revisions/hacks of known games, and when I find something interesting that I like (such as the trackball centipede hack for the 7800) I want to be able to recognize it and appreciate their work. Thank you for your help, --SilvaHaloOne
  24. I just want to take a second to thank Paul for hooking me up with an excellent condition 800XL and a couple of games for what I consider a killer price. He also showed me the Myide II and some of the more interesting tech demos for the system. I'm very happy about it. If you are in a position to do business with Paul (Eight Bit Fix), I would recommend it without hesitation. And thanks again for all the advice on here, I'm sure I'll talk to some of you again in the near future. Hope you are able to find the answer you are looking for Shaggy.
  25. Again, I really appreciate the wealth of information on the subject you all have and provide. Most unfortunately, it seems like the sale isn’t going to happen, at least for now. They decided to wait on it, and his wife thought it was worth more than then I was going to pay for it, which is probably true. However, this is after a couple of weeks messing around with the 400 and Win800 plus, trying things out and stuff… basically I’m hooked and have decided that I’m going to pursue the same thing via another avenue. As a bizarre coincidence, I found a 400 with 48K on Craigslist for sale earlier today and am conversing with the seller about checking it out. He may also have a 1050 that he is willing to part with too. So I’m hopeful that I have something going forward by the weekend. --SilvaHaloOne
