Compiling 2600 Jr. "Unicorn" 1-chip serial number list, please help!!
skintigh replied to skintigh's topic in Atari 2600
Not a useful data point, but mildly interesting: apparently some boxes have the serial number on them. Only 1 out of 3 of this type of box I've seen on ebay. -
Another data point: A1 81 1499521 (blue) seen on ebay by me.

Thank you! So that looks like a PAL unit -- FCC ID EBA2T82600 I have several more serial numbers I wanted to add to my data, but I can't edit my post?!?! That's going to make it hard to update the list. Anyway, now I'm looking for "A1 8C ..." or later A1 89 1884673 - 3-chip, Rev ?, Seen on eBay by skintigh A1 89 1894480 - 3-chip, Rev ?, Seen on eBay by skintigh [looks 3-chip] A1 89 1894481 - 3-chip, Rev F, toymailman [I assume Rev F = 3-chip] A1 89 1912894 - 3-chip, Rev ?, Seen on eBay by skintigh (color is super faded) A1 8B 1929296 - 3-chip, Rev ?, Seen on eBay by skintigh A1 8B 1945963 - ?-chip, Rev ?, Seen on eBay by skintigh (no pics, seller xb might find more info but so special) A1 8C 1975714 - ?-chip, Rev ?, Seen on eBay by ApolloBoy A1 ?? 1979508 - 3-chip, Rev ?, Seen on eBay by skintigh A1 93 1985935 - ?-chip, Rev ?, Seen on eBay by ApolloBoy A1 ?? 2025558 - 3-chip, Rev ?, Seen on eBay by skintigh, (trying to double check it's 3 chip and get the board rev) -- -- ------- A1 98 2041661 - ?-chip, Rev ?, Mirage1972 "possibly 1-chip" ?? ?? ??????? - 1-chip, Rev 3, LittleJoe (trying to contact him for #) A1 98 2042053 - 1-chip, Rev ?, from TK reported second hand by skintigh A1 98 2045143 - 1-chip, Rev 4, Longhorn Engineer A1 9B 2057527 - 1-chip, Rev ?, Benzman66 A1 01 2071066 - ? chip, Rev ? I'm looking for any Atari 2600 Jr. with serial number 1900000 or higher Please help me determine the number of 1-chip/JAN/Janice/Unicorns made! I am looking for: Serial number and color (example: A1 98 2041661, pictures preferred) Number of chips (include a pic of it opened, or through the vents, or see https://imgur.com/gallery/QH9RZM3) Revision letter on main board The data: [updated 5/16/2021] A1 YM serial# chips Rev Source Notes A1 89 1884673 3 Seen on eBay by skintigh A1 89 1884747 3 Seen on eBay by skintigh A1 89 1894480 3 Seen on eBay by skintigh A1 89 1894481 3 F toymailman A1 89 1912894 3 Seen on eBay by skintigh 89 color is super faded A1 8B 1929296 3 Seen on eBay by skintigh A1 8B 1929476 * Seen on eBay by skintigh A1 8B 1945963 * Seen on eBay by skintigh A1 8B 1954263 3 Seen on eBay by skintigh A1 8B 1954896 3 Seen on eBay by skintigh A1 8B 1965465 3 Seen on eBay by skintigh 8B super blurry, 89? So ones that fail and are repaired will have out of order stamps? Maybe 2009309 had its entire board replaced? The out-of-order numbers seem to happen in the final months. Maybe supplies were so short that Atari repaired every unit they could that had previously failed QA, shipped them, and then shipped the prototypes JANs? Other sightings: LittleJoe has the only Rev 3 Atari I've ever seen, but efforts to contact him here and ebay failed. Unknown serial # AtariJoe has "a few." His email, youtube channel and website are gone. He stopped tweeting & posting on FB on 1/30/2017. May be deceased? the.golden.ax had 1, sent it to Longhorn, I assume that's the # above, he was going to send it to Marty for a museum maiki has X 11A4 304699, sounds like a pal 3 namedjughead had one, but it died and is long gone. How many were made? All 2600 Jrs: 2,071,066+ made (assuming no overlap in serial numbers and assuming Ravenprose's number is real) 1-chips: 19,290 in the contiguous block of known 1-chips 2038237 to 2057527 32,830 counting 2038237 to 2071066, assuming it is real. 45,508 if we assume 2025559 is a 1-chip (optimistic) and assume 2071066 is real and count to it, and assume that 2009309 is a glitch 60,000+ if we count from 2009309 to 2071066 and assume the 2 3 s are glitches (very optimistic) This seems even less likely after finding 2011186 50,000 might be a good guess, as that's a nice round number of chips to order from a fabricator. Assumptions for all units listed: Long rainbow model Atari 2600 Junior Serial number format appears to be: A1 YM NNNNNNN Made in Taiwan in the year 198Y for 7-9 or 1990 Y=0, month M (1-9,A,B,C for Jan-Dec) Color of YM doesn't seem to matter. So far I've seen blue, green and black. NNNNNNN is the raw number of units made at that factory (I have no actual evidence of this) FCC ID EBA72R2600 NTSC (PAL units seem to have a different FCC ID, and maybe always start with X?) Board revisions spotted: 3-chip: NTSC: Rev A, B, C, D, E, F PAL: Rev F1 1-chip: Rev 3, 4 Chip version info Every chip I've seen from a Rev 4 board says: C101688-002 ATARI 1987 RP2A10 then the next line is slightly different, maybe they are batch numbers or something: 38 8L1 54 3? ?L2 43 38 8L1 43 38 8L2 49 38 8L2 48 The only chip from a Rev 3 board I've seen is different (photo is blurry and hard to read, guesses are in parens) : C101688-001 ATARI 1987 RP2A10 (3/2/1)4 7C(E/1/L/I) 5(2/7/1) Assumption is chip was made by Ricoh, as RP2A10 is similar to the NES chip RP2A03 Sources I pulled some of this data from a 2010 thread and by contacting owners directly. Oh noooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 😪 This looks like a 3-chip, right? I was hoping 1-chips started around unit #1,900,000 and they made 170,000+. This one I just found suggests they don't start until after 2,025,558 and there were around 45,508 made (if we assume @Ravenprose owns a 1-chip and it was one of the last ones made) Otherwise, we have only confirmed they made 2057527 - 2042053 or 15,474 1-chip units!! That's about 0.75% of total production of Jr.s if the serial numbers can be trusted.

If not I may start a new one

A1891894480 Bizarrely, it's the serial number 1 before @toymailmans unit!!!!!!!!!!!!! Added notes on Rev 3 and Rev 4 1-chip boards.

@toymailman Rev F == 3-chip? @ApolloBoy I have another number to add and I can verify from ebay photos that A1891884673 is 3 chip. Also, the 89 is blue. Working on getting info for A18B1945963

I assume someone figured this out but it wasn't listed. It seems the format for Long Rainbow NTSC serial numbers is A1 y m NNNNNNN For example: A1 8=1998 C=12=December 1975714=1,975,714th unit made (at that factory)? For older models, I believe it is AT yy mm XXXXX The yy seems obvious, and the mm is always in the range 00-11. But that could be coincidence, as the XXXXX seems random. Maybe, like the score in Asteroids, it flips after 100,000? I can also report (second hand) another 1-chip unit: A1982042053 I hunt for more unicorns...

Hacking the Flashback 4 -- looking for info
skintigh replied to skintigh's topic in AtGames Flashback and Portable Consoles
Thanks for all the info! That picture of the FB3 is exactly what I'm hoping for -- those chips are perfect for extracting data. I fear the glob-top... It doesn't make it impossible, it just makes it more annoying than I want to deal with for now. I'm surprised nobody has done a tear down or review of the FB4 showing the chips. -
Hacking the Flashback 4 -- looking for info
skintigh replied to skintigh's topic in AtGames Flashback and Portable Consoles
Which is great as I have experience reversing Arm and Thumb. Sadly none of those site say which Arm chip it was, nor include a picture showing which, if any, external ROM is on board and what kind of anti-tamper work they've done. -
I am considering buying a flashback 4 and seeing what I can do to it. I decided to research it online first and I can't find a single picture of it's mainboard or description of the chips it uses. Does anyone have that information or pictures? My goal would be to use a chip reader to extract information from the ROM and the reverse engineer the program in Ida Pro to see what I can work with. But that requires there to be a ROM/PROM, and preferably for it to be accessible (some boards cover them in black sludge). Thanks.
