Bump-dated.... Hex. [ "Bumpdated"? Is that a real word? ]

I just realized that Transformers: War for Cybertron uses SecureRom. I haven't found anything telling me how intrusive it is yet. Let's say that I'm not happy to hear about this application being a potential rootkit. The game was fun, but super short -- cleared the thing in 3-4 days. Not interested in multiplayer and what they offer in terms of options is limited. Trying to check out that Reclaimyourgame site, and it's not loading. <sigh> Really, I don't mind buying games, provided I'm not treated like a bloody criminal. But Oh, I forgot, according to publishers, we are all criminals. Hex. [ Isn't totally getting his love on with steam and battle.net either, I tolerate it currently... ]

Is somebody trying to scam me?
hex65000 replied to Taskmaster99's topic in Modern Console Discussion
My wife's nephew sent me one of those "1600" messages. I simply asked him what was up. I almost expected to hear something along the lines of a XBox live messenger worm when I saw the initial post. Thankfully, that doesn't appear to be the case, just general gullibility/stupidity is all. While annoying, much less dangerous overall in this case. Hex. Bump - update: ISA fan card is sold. Surprised the sticks haven't sold. The last one I spotted on EBay went for $10 and mine are less and in nicer shape. <shrug> Hex. [ Makes the magic happen whether it wants to or not... ]

Anybody here play World of Warcraft?
hex65000 replied to yuppicide's topic in Modern Console Discussion
I've avoided the subscription model that WoW, Everquest, and the new DC universe game appear to be offering to gamers. However, I am seriously considering Guild Wars 2. I saw a demo video and it looked pretty cool. At least once I buy the license I don't have to shell out for it again unless there's an expansion. There is something appealing about the kill things-get stuff model. The best part is if Guild Wars 2 doesn't do anything for me, I can walk away with my credit card information intact. Mind you, I am on Battle.net regularly to play StarCraft 2 ... and I am a horrible player. <sigh> Hex. [ Okay, minor threat if left unattended may be a more accurate statement. You get the idea though. ] -

Anyone else have the "box bug"
hex65000 replied to HatefulGravey's topic in Classic Console Discussion
I am not a fan of messing with cardboard boxes. I have some. There are smatterings of 2600, 5200, NES, SNES, N64, and GB games in my collection. Since I am a pack rat (in recovery we hope) I wind up collapsing some boxes to save space, and I just had to 'let go' of some of the boxed 2600 games I have, Things like Genesis and Neo Geo, where a hard plastic shell was part of the packaging the complete package is mandatory. I can't say on the Turbo Grafix. I only have a handful of titles and have hooked it up once in that time. I think the paltry collection I have will be fine and it's best to not think about it. For systems like the 2600, SNES, and N64 a decent looking cart + a manual is enough for me to call it complete. I picked up some postcard sleeves and I can cram manuals into them like a trading card collection. Works pretty well for the Nintendo items at least. I don't have box protectors, but I do use comic bags to at least help protect them from wear and exposure to dirt. Hex. game mechanics that need to die already
hex65000 replied to xg4bx's topic in Modern Console Discussion
Second playthroughs. It was novel on a couple of RPGs I've played. After a while it becomes a heaping helping of don't care. You usually get to keep some part or all of your skill tree on the second run, but it's monumentally easy... ... Until ... <cue foreboding boss battle music> You run into the "super-mega-uber-kick-you-in-the-nutz-and-wipe-your-party-out-in-one-shot-guy" or as they like to call it, the "Secret boss" their presence typically throws most of your boss fight strategys out the window. You have to have a lot of luck and maxed out characters to stand a chance. It's just not fun for me. It also rarely buys you any more storyline other than bragging rights. I just blew 80+ hours on an RPG. What Do thEy WanT froM meEeEEEeee? Hex. [ Can feel the madness creeping in from all sides... except for the left side. Apparently my left side is paralyzed. ] -
I'm interested in a loose w/ manual version. Box I can take or leave unless it's exceptionally interesting. You describe the game as unfinished. I really have no good frame of reference to go on here, so can you clarify that? Is it playable, or partially, or just a hot mess? Chris mentioned getting an idea of what time frame we are looking at. I'm trying to scale my collection back and shed dupes, space and money at the right time are concerns here. Hex. [ Was a REALLY sore loser last night... in retrospect it was embarrassing. ]

I would argue that it's lost primarily because a lot of folks don't think about keeping their stuff beyond a relatively short interval. The prevalence of GameStop and what I would call least common denominator iterative games illustrate that. Depends on who you ask. If you ask publishers or people who have been convinced that buying and selling used is just like (piracy / infringement) the answer would likely be the rent model. Publishers have been wringing their collective hands on that for a while -- the other demographic is (IMO) lost in the illusion that talking heads and publishers present that they believe it, or are so focused on a throw-away world that while they may balk at a rental model, but you put a least common denominator title as a rental console exclusive and watch them fall in line fast. I am of the opinion that we are collectively not the target audience for these consoles. Oh sure, they'll gladly take our money, and even throw us a bone once in a while. However that LCD I keep talking about, it isn't us and they are the ones the publishers want to sell to. Also of note, just like in politics, if you keep repeating the same message over and over again, people start believing in it. Because you keep saying it in multiple ways and in multiple locations I guess. <shrug> But it works. People parrot talking heads and politicians all the time. That's how I explain the whole anti used games argument gaining any real traction at least. You have stated in long form what I've come to realize:Developers hate us as users, but they love our money. They hate us as users because we "Just can't be trusted with anything". The other part is pretty self explanatory. This image scares me terribly. I like the option to do unauthorized things to my gear. The emphasis being "my gear" If it's not impacting others, nobody should care. Of course, as soon as it's a rental model all that goes out the window. In other words, we collectively should be disturbed by the endgame model you describe. I've been reading parts of this big thread, and the entire ps3 decrypt key thing is an overall win. It'll mean that eventually when Sony abandons support, there will be the possibility of breathing life back into the platform once our corporate masters declare it "obsolete". While the online cheating is inappropriate, it doesn't surprise me. The payoff isn't necessarily now, but with luck it'll come -- provided we still can own the hardware we buy. <Stop: Tangent time!> As an example, I've been playing a lot of StarCraft 2. A whole lot. Like logging at least 2 hours or more on average per day since around November. Now on the Blizzard forums, there is a lot of rolling out of what I call a player's digital phallus. Mostly along the lines of: "Your statement is invalid because my rating in this game is far better than yours, therefore you are an idiot." I can see this as a motive for online cheaters to improve -- not through any real skill -- their proverbial phallus. If only so they can get some cool gun, or skin, or whatever bonuses you can only get by being crazy good at a game. In some cases cheaters is like trolling, how annoyed can the cheater make everyone else as other players curse at them. I look at cheating this way, if it's you and your friends and you are all doing it together, it's not that big a deal. If it is you doing it to random strangers who are looking for a straight up game, it's not appropriate. < and we're back...> Something I wonder about is there are folks who are now 30-40 somethings who grew up with Atari and the NES. When the current LCD demographic get nostalgic and want to play their old games again, they will have roughly zero to work with. Other than whatever our corporate masters want to rent to us at that particular moment in time. I'd point out the irony of all of this to them then, but I figure they'll tell me to "Go to bed old man" or culturally we will have no sense of irony. Another generalization is that it seems the newer the console the less cohesive the work done on it is from the homebrew / system hacking community. The exception might be the Wii which seems to have at least a semblance of a cohesive development culture. Hex. [ Broke down and got a Steam account... I'm not sure what I actually "bought"... if anything. ]

Do you own a device with a digital camera?
hex65000 replied to CPUWIZ's topic in Buy, Sell, and Trade
Off the top of my head, 1 Cell phone 2 digital cameras (an old Kodak 6Mp and a new Panasonic 14Mp) 3 Laptops with integrated webcams 2 Nintendo DSi systems 1 USB webcam that I am currently using as a microphone Mind you, of those things, only the digital cameras and rarely my cell phone are used to take pictures. I don't need the integrated cameras on my laptops, and I have no interest in the DSi for taking pictures or video. So of that number, only 3 are useful to me and maybe a fourth when the need arises. I think I have figured out the problem, those of us who 'have' are taking away needed digital photography resources from others. Hex. [ Last seen putting a piece of tape over the lens... ] -
The Random BIG AX BOX of Crap - SOLD OUT!
hex65000 replied to the.golden.ax's topic in Buy, Sell, and Trade
I don't know yet. I got my box Sat. last week and was gonna shoot the video on Tuesday, but I forgot the box. Didn't have time on Wed. Set everything up and realized I left my memory card elsewhere. <facepalm> So TODAY is the day I will get this box opening shot, and hopefully the video editing and my narration will be less painful than the last go-round. I didn't go for wave two because I still hadn't opened wave one. Hex. [ Is starting to view this effort as a comedy of errors on my part... ] -
Hrm. I call it 'culling the weak'. Part of me is amused by this because I can imagine the least common denominator doing this solely for the purpose of warezing the latest iteration of Madden. The other part of me is a bit nervous about it because those big dollar machines are effectively useless until folks figure out how to unbrick them or pawn them off on EBay as "Untested as is" Hex. [ Admittedly wants to hack his PSP, but is too nervous to do it... ]

To be honest, I can't tell at this point if you are an academic, or just a troll. Tell you what, I'll make this easy, show me five out of your 1000 meaningful links to back up what you're talking about. Especially something that backs up reversing the position of the crystal. While I'm skeptical of the regulator being the problem, it's an easy test to make sure it's functioning correctly. The color pot? An easy test that isn't intrusive. Telling someone who admitted up front that they are not an experienced solderer yank parts willy-nilly, just sounds like a good way to have them break their system. Not to mention that they are likely to roast the can with their iron trying to get it pulled out of the board. I'm not sure you accounted for that in your supposition. So while we wait for the OP to tell us what they have found so far, I would like to see your data. Hex. [ I believe the term is, "I call."... ]
