  1. Can you take a picture of the problem? I'm just not totally visualizing everything. Hex. [ Brakes are for slow people... ]
  2. heck, I would have taken those just to make Genesis Video Dongles out of them. And to cannibalize them for their lithium batteries when needed. Hex. [ Umm... right... Brak rules. ]
  3. Hey, I was surprised with the Home Improvement SNES game. It's a 2d platformer with some aspects of Sonic and a flimsy storyline, but at the same time the feel was competent, the boards I did get a chance to explore rewarded you for looking around thoroughly. Mind you it's a game based off of Tim Allen. . . My expectations were pretty low at the starting gate. Tell me more about the Family Guy game. I mean that series has more ADD than.. I.. What was I talking about? Hex. [ " Because I hate those guys so very... very... much" --Cartman; South Park ]
  4. Since its so plentiful you can probably find one in the wild for a dollar (or less). And really, I'm sure you've spent more money on something you didn't like in the past. A trivial outlay just makes the risk more palatable if you aren't impressed. Do go through the manual first though, it'll help the game make more sense. I did admittedly play ET a lot when I was kid. It did not age well to me, but still. I've blown more money on dumber things... Hex. [ Some might call it keepin' it 'real'... I call it perspective. ]
  5. Here's one for you guys, I need some ideas and want to see what the community can come up with. Why: Soon, oh so very soon, I will finally start my senior year at school. It is a good thing. I am sick of school. However, as required I must create something original to show that I am truly clueful. That's where you can help me out here. So... I'm soliciting for ideas for my Senior design project. I don't need nuts and bolts aspects, but some suggestions for an item that would be useful to the retro community in general. My knee-jerk reaction was to attempt a homebrew game. I actually have mulled one over in my head and know what I would want to do in it. However, that is more of a programming project than a hardware related one. While doing some software work is not out of the question, the idea is to perform something more hardware-centric. Other requirements: - Not redundant to an existing project. There's no real point in doing the same work twice and run the risk that work has been plagurized. - Usefulness: The project has to have some reasonable application that is not limited to about 10 people. - Cool factor: Let's face it. nobody likes 'lame' projects. It has to be interesting and have some degree of appeal to the unintiated. - Reasonable time to complete: I have to do this and my regular classload and work. An overly ambitious project will never get done. Hex. [ Needs to not watch any more South Park for about a month... ]
  6. Some of us wish that we could afford to pay a lot. That is an awesome collection. Hex. [ perhaps now would be a good time to sell his body to science fiction... ]
  7. You can do that only to a limit. Then inexperience can really take its toll. But I'm sure that the interest is more financially motivated than the motivation to do stuff better. Hex. [ Hopes to work full time at his current job when he gets out of school. . . ]
  8. A couple of non-Squaresoft RPGs that may be of interest, both of these previously appeared on the Dreamcast: Evolution: Worlds Skies of Arcadia If you pick up a game boy player for your cube, you are truly in RPG fat-city. There is also (unmentioned already) Phantasy Star Collection (Phantasy Star 1 -> 3) Medabots RPG : This is more of a pokemon class game, I did find it rewarding enough to play both versions (Metabee & Rokusho) and I am definately enjoying it more than the Pokemon: Leaf Green which is feeling like some kind of painful trudge-fest. Do get the first Golden Sun though. It's really well done, but some of the puzzles will tick you off. And lastly: Game Boy Player: Get one. Thank you for your attention. Hex. 9. To my knowlege they are functionally identical. While I don't patrol Ebay as rabidly as some on here . I am waiting on the arrival of my Sears heavy to compare to the heavy 6 I found in the wild. Although, the picture quality on my heavy isn't as good as the picture I see on my jr or 7800. There are several possible answers for that, and my setup is a wreck right now so setting up a proper comparison is moot. I will say this: my Heavy-6 seems to have a much more vibrant colors in comparison to my other machines, but it also seems more susceptable to picture noise from the sound a lot more too. I'm not sure if that has to do with the design of the unit or that mine is starting to have a failure somewhere. Hex. [ Mmmmm.... noodles. ]
  10. No No... Drake _IS_ bad... It had some promise, but the computer AI and camera control will make you insane. Soulcalibur 2 for cheap is always a good thing... Hex. [ Or in my case, perhaps a bit more fit to interact with society.. ]
  11. Give it a light shake. If you feel a strange 'resonance' in there, it's likely that one of the lithium battery terminals has broken loose. I got pretty good at detecting it in the regular GB carts... Hex. [ And then I had to fix the damn things... ]
  12. Gaplus is also on the Namco Museum Volume 2. disc. I remeber there being something disappointing about the game, but it's not coming to me right now. Hex. [ Coffee _Power_Up!_ ]
  13. Interesting... To answer the rhetorical Bubble Bath Babes question, I would very likely resell that because I am just not into the adult themed 8-bit games, (and the attached explanation I'd have to give the female counterpart) but there would be a part of me that would want to keep it just because of the novelty factor. I have a very bad habit of keeping the first of whatever it is I find in the wild/whereever and if a second one comes with a stack of things I want then it goes in the recycle pile. To me it's the nature of collecting. (IE: you find a stack of neat items, among them some good hole-fillers, but the seller doesn't want to break the batch up so you get a bunch of extra stuff in the process. -- And now, what do you do with it.... ummmm... ) And to answer the question of what BBB is like, you can prolly find a rom of it out there... it's an awful lot like a poorly implemented tetris clone. I played it long enough to get past the first level and don't plan to play that one again. Hex. [ Now if it was say a tengen Tetris the answer is Keep. ]
  14. Okay this is going to sound pretty odd... I just dusted off my three Spectravideo carts in my collection (Tapeworm, Planet Patrol, & Nexar) along with Demolition Herby (because I wanted to see how I'd stack up in the hi-score round this week; I don't want to talk about that I _suck_ ) Anyway, all three of my spectravideo carts were real persnikity about firing up. Tapeworm seems the most stable, Planet Patrol gets hosed up on my 2600jr, but worked okay on my heavy-6 Nexar is dead. Real DEAD. After cleaning, re-cleaning, and re-re-cleaning the contacts and trying it in the picky jr, heavy 6 and 7800 it was very dead. So now I think I need a replacement Nexar and I'm worried about my other two working carts. These came straight from my childhood so it's not like it was a barnyard special here. It's got me rather frustrated and I'm focusing on it way too much. Nexar wasn't that great a game. Now I am feeling rushed to check out my other hard to replace games. (some Parker Bros., Cosmic Swarm, the Supercharger, and Malagai ) Demolition Herby fired up on the first crack. As did my entire US games collection. Thoughts? ideas? an extra Nexar cart? :-/ Hex. 15. It's not like those guys _DO_ anything with their trade ins. They put a new price tag on it and it goes out for sale. The few times I actually buy anything from the chains, I ask to look at the disc before they sticker it up. I've turned down some decent finds because of that. Hex. [ Last seen at GameStop lamenting the condition of their cartridges... ]
  16. 1) I've never gotten into internet streaming audio and it's a 'banned' practice at work. 2) I'm not sure why my PC gaming has scaled back as much as it has. I do however pick up PC versions of some console titles because its usually a notable fraction of the price the current-gen console game would cost. They don't get installed tho... my machine needs a newer vid card first. 3) I refuse to play online using a console, and my FPS skills on a PC are so poor nowadays that I'd best not embarrass myself in front of other people. Hex. [ Nothing good will come of it... except monkeys! ]
  17. I didn't win this one http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...item=8170149474 I won... http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...item=8170163859 This one almost got passed over until I looked at the cartride shot... I am _SO_ pleased. And $12.00 to ship is tolerable at the end of the day. I just hope at least one of those sticks are the original heavy-style. And yeah, I will be looking for loving homes for all of those carts eventually. I don't see anything that I don't already have or would upgrade my collection. Final verdict when it appears at my door... Hex. [ Beware my gray-force powers like Force Pimp-Slap and Force Jock Itch... ]
  18. Measuring resistance... Okay, on the x & y pots you have 3 pins coming off of it. the pins on the left and right are either ends of your resistive strip and the center is your tap. (typical configuration, you can probably fool me with a variant if you looked hard enough) First, disconnect one of the ends and your tap connecetion from a pot. You have to take the resistor out of the circuit in order to measure resistance properly. Set your DMM to ohms. Measure across the left and right pins. Adjust your scale if necessary. This number will tell you what the (rough) maximum resistance of the pot will give you. Now you can do the same thing with a 5200 stick, but I'm betting that there's documentatioon on what those pots' max resistance should be. Does that help? Hex. [ I'm doin' the best that I can... now run away! ]
  19. Here's my running list of extras I have for the 2600. I have tried to be very critical of each item so that there are no surprises. If you would like to see pictures of any of these, please PM me and we'll move from there. All of these have been cleaned inside and outside and tested for functionality. In some cases, I have multiple copies of these items, I'd rather move the one at the top of the stack first. if there is a common that you are looking for in better shape let me know -- it will be priced appropriately mind you. ** Name * Sticker Type * Publisher / Rarity *** notes Price -- Football : picture label : Atari / 1 === Main sticker is okay, has some wear and is slightly lifting in 3 of 4 corners, front label is slightly curling up from the bottom $1.00 -- Frogger : standard : Parker Bros / 1 === Sticker has serious wear and actiplaque, tiny tear in bottom right corner of main label, sticker is not lifting though $1.00 -- Missile Command : Capital Letters/picture : Atari / 1 === Nothing noteworthy, very good cond. $1.00 -- Night Driver : picture label : Atari / 1 === Main sticker looks very good, front label has a scuff and 1/8" of the upper left corner has curled/creased $1.00 -- Pac Man : picture label : Atari / 1 === Main sticker looks good, front sticker has minor scuff. $1.00 -- Space Invaders : Capital Letters/picture : Atari / 1 === Main sticker shows some wear and minor actiplaque, front label looks pretty good. $1.00 -- Football : text only (3) : Sears / 2 === Main sticker has been punched through at screw and at rectangular hole, front label is rather nice $1.00 -- Frogs and Flies : Blue Label : Mattel / 2 === Trivial actiplaque, otherwise looks very good. $2.00 -- Grand Prix : Color : Activision / 2 === definite Actiplaque, three trivial tears at top of label, some wear at the corner edge. 20. Heck, is that the correct power brick? Hex. [ needs to own all the power brick variants... ]
  21. True. It's tough to find boxes for the NES/SNES//N64 . There is a difference in that the Genesis carts came with a durable plastic cover. It was a logical step to realize that the packaging was meant also to seve as storage. With cardboard boxes, that leap is harder to make. Heck, when I was a kid we kept all the paperwork and the cart and then threw the box away. It wasn't regarded as something 'useful', nor did it lend itself to clearly protecting the cart that came in the box. While I know those plastic shells were probably expensive for Sega, it rates as one of the most practical ideas I've seen. Makes me wish it was done for lots of other cart based systems... Hex. [ Just likes the order that comes with a nice sturdy case... ]
  22. Please please... just use a meter (DMM) like you should. That's as gross as blowing in the cartridge to get that layer of spit on it... Hex. [ with more experience in 'spit removal' than he cares to admit... ]
  23. Honestly, I think part of the problem is that the chain stores throw the cases away. Not only does it make it harder to complete a Genesis title, it also creates artificial demand for a thing that should not have been thrown away. I do wonder that since most chains don't take SMS stuff the cases can typically be found. Books are harder though. But I'll take what I find. I just don't find too much SMS anything really. Hex. 25. It ended at over $500!? That is beyond insane. At least the seller got what they wanted. And hopefully the bidder will pay up. I am now thrilled that my copy om MMx2 was around $15 or so, but no manual (I have a box though). Hex. [ Also has a MMx3 box, and nothing else... ]
