I thought I paid Ax for his copy... or is this a bad timing thing? Hex. [ Would rather just lay here... because I don't wanna go... ]

Sony's plan for backwards compatibility?
hex65000 replied to xg4bx's topic in Modern Gaming Discussion
None of this is surprising to me. I've determined that the current gen publishers hate us as users, but love our money. I just stockpiled a handful of PS1 and PS2 systems and they sit in a box waiting until my currently running unit gives out. I figure finding replacements, parts, and any form of troubleshooting support is going to be close to zero. Best to have a spare or two in my back pocket. Hex. [ Has not even hooked up his PS3... I can't find my stash of blue K'Nex sticks... ] -
While I lack the artistic chops of other members here, I would recommend a _small_ logo with the relevent letters shown. Kind of like this: It tells you what it is, and the circled letters tell you the rest. Alternately, you could put the XM on top of the rainbow stripe and save even more real-estate. Otherwise you risk cluttering things up too much. I think this approach balances information at a glance but keeps clutter down and allows a lot of flexibility to the label artist. I also agree that a manual should provide more in-depth information (almost boiler-plate style) on the XM and what each letter means. Hex. [ Can't draw using GIMP worth a damn, but I hopefully can convey style... ]

ORDERS ARE READY!- ATARI 2600 NTSC Bouncing Baby Bunnies
hex65000 replied to Wonder007's topic in Buy, Sell, and Trade
Mine came in yesterday and I fired it up. The game is pretty tough. That trampoline buzzes around pretty quick and I just never quite got used to it. It was fun reading the box materials to my wife who just thinks I'm a bit of a looney sometimes. Thanks again! Hex. [ Was reminded that he needs to pick up a LHEng. video mod in the future... ] -
Pre-Order Page is now up for 7800 Expansion Module
hex65000 replied to Curt Vendel's topic in Atari 7800
I would safely guess that if Curt was going to all this trouble to make a box that looked like it came from Atari's mightier years that he would pack it in something to protect it during shipping. Heck, I wasn't expecting a box honestly. To me, the custom enclosure and manual is good enough. A box is just icing on the cake in my mind. Hex. [ Is ready to just fall over... <zzZZZzzz....> ] -
It appears that they are back up and running again. I didn't see anything that said what was causing the poor response or lack of access to their site(s). Updated HBC and BootMii to the current rev., ran the official Nintendo update and I'm current on 4.3u with homebrew functionality still in place. Now I need to figure out how to install a cIOS so I can use one of the memcard manager apps I found through the homebrew browser... My impression is that the cIOS installs are typically used for 'backups' I'm a total noob at this and really just want to get the memory manager application working so I can move around my Wii and GCube saves. Anyway, things look healthy as far as I can tell.. Spoiler below contains my current syscheck report. Hex. [ Is just happy that he can now boot up Haunted House without worrying about screwing up his install... ]

Thing is, I'm not sure if we are gonna have a mass revolt. We've collectively talked about the upside and downside of DLC. I'm not going to reiterate that here, but it is part of the framework being put in place by publishers. I don't think there will be a total crash because you have to think like the least common denominator -- those folks who go to gamestop and preorder madden and other 'top tier' titles -- the ones who think nothing about what's been only what is now. I personally have little faith in them realizing that they are getting less overall for the same amount of money or more. It's a losing proposition for the average consumer/gamer/fanboy. The arguments about this entire thing is pretty complex overall. It's essay worthy -- I'm already too verbose and I'm sure there are those who go, "Too long Hex, did not read." At the risk of this getting flagged as political, but a page from the election time playbooks is simple: Soundbite politics. A soundbite that drives home that publishers view consumers as the enemy. Design a bullet bad enough and MAYBE the masses will wake up and see what's happening. Of course there's the culture of instant gratification / want it now or sooner that is permeated our world. DLC is another function of that. As is our rather throw away society. Cell phone died for no obvious reason? Oh well, I'll just buy another phone. New Iphone comes out tomorrow? Well, who needs this crappy previous generation clunker? That's a piece of our society that needs to get under control. Just my opinion... Hex. [ Knows he's hitting the edge of the whole P&R thing. There's a reason I left it to tactics and not who I think uses that tactic more or less. ]

Agreed. However, if a crash occurs it's pretty unlikely that consumer revolt will be recognized by those running the game companies. I've already abandoned Borderlands and Activision isn't getting any more cash for Guitar Hero. I'm still buying games here and there, but it's been a lot of me going "Meh. I don't need it." more often than not. Still, I've bought SEVEN new (in shrinkwrap) games in the past week and all at some kind of discount. One of which was Haunted House and you can read my adventures in the Wii section there. Hex. [ Is honestly obsessed over this bootmii being down/denied... since it seems so off the radar.]

Still dead over here and from the looks of it I'm not the only one. If you try to actually dig into the website and the download page you'll get timed out. I wonder if Nintendo is launching a DOS attack on them -- most likely candidate. That does seem to be at least morally questionable if that is true. Hex. [ Is willing to wait, but this is rather disturbing to see. ]

So I picked up Haunted House and planned on spending last night digging into the fun until I had to go to sleep. But of course, Nintendo is pushing system updates through their new games. I've got a slightly older rev of the Homebrew channel and after realizing that the update would likely kill my homebrew channel install and plug any chances of it working again, I decided to try and update my HBC install first. The result is nothing happened. And even the Homebrew updater (which is an awesome idea) was crapping out due to being unable to connect to the site. I tried it again just a little bit ago and the entire group of sites seem to be hosed. Is this Nintendo's lawyer-drones finally beating down the Homebrew channel or is this just simply technical difficulties. Regardless. I would like to reinstall HBC 1.08 before I submit to Nintendo's will. Any insights here? Or help? Hex. [ While I know these guy(s) likely pissed off Nintendo pretty badly, I give them credit for trying to keep their tools from becoming totally being co-opted by the warez circle... ]

Another vote for Nostalgia here. I just started playing it on Saturday and I'm enjoying it so far. The combat rating system is kicking my butt and I've died in a few air battles already. It's a clear step up in difficulty when compared to FF3 and A Witch's Tale. I do like the turn based combat systems a bit more than the real-timeish ones if only because if I fall asleep while playing I don't die immediately. While not turn based, Phantasy Star Universe on 360 has been fun for me too. Hex. [ Notes that A Witch's Tale is like a JRPG gateway drug. It's a relatively easy playthrough (twice), and was enjoyable in that context. ]

Is Donkey Konga for Gamecube any fun?
hex65000 replied to yuppicide's topic in Classic Console Discussion
I liked it so much I imported Donkey Konga 3. The mechanic is similar to Taiko Drum Master on the PS2, but honestly the bongos are much more responsive and you can either go crazy like I do and just bop em with notable force or you can do it cool like my sister does and just press the tops and tap the side as needed. Either method works, but it is super fun. What is the going rate for a new copy with bongos is running nowadays? I don't know much about Jungle Beat so I can't comment on that one. Lastly, my sister is scary-good at this game. 0_o Hex. [ Was gonna buy some stuff and just had to force himself to change his mind and empty that online shopping cart... ] -

I typically use a sniping tool for EBay, but I really have been avoiding EBay overall. I'm avoiding EBay for a few reasons. The first is that I have had too much success on EBay using a snipe tool. The second is I'm really getting strapped for cash, and that kind of links in with the previous point. I also prefer using GameGavel over EBay too, but there's no auto-sniper there, so for items I really want, I'll manually snipe those auctions. If I kind of want it, but won't lose sleep if I win or lose, I'll slap down a token bid and let it ride. Sometimes that is followed by a snipe, but that's not always the case. Hex. [ Got an Unreal Tournament 3 faceplate by just slapping a bid down... The REAL score was the Eternal Sonata faceplate set. ]

I wonder if this is why when I visit the site using my DSi I run into trouble. (Too much Javascript?) It works, but it's super sluggish rendering the page, and something weird happens with the links after the page has been fully rendered. Links don't respond when tapped on but then go there if I hit Back or Reload. <shrug> If I cancel the load early, I can typically navigate normally. Good luck Al! Hex. [ Really should clean a bunch of crap out of his account before the conversion hits. I'm home anyway... <shrug> ]

That Gameboy devkit is really tempting... Only reason I'm not all over it is: Space, and Time to come up with something awesome for the GameBoy. Right now, that thing is a STEAL. Hopefully there will be some hobbyist action near the end. And a free bump for Mike and the seller. Hex. [ Really likes seeing the dev. tools that were used to make games, but really lacks the "game programming chops" for it. ]

Sometimes I think that game designers have really gone off the deep end... WHO is the target audience here exactly? Oktoberfest: The Official Game 0_o Secondly, WHO in their right mind as a publisher would bankroll this? Hopefully that over-pronounced cleavage was thrown in as part of the bargain, or they got ripped off. Hex. [ Also noticed that ONE copy is available. The urge to try and play something that is potentially eye-bleedingly bad has struck me. Oh yeah, I have other bad games I can play... ]

I got my parts from Newark in one... 3.8mm bit 4.5mm bit You'll need the 4.5mm bit to open the cube up. The 3.8 is handy if you have to deal with NES/SNES/N64 carts. They look to be about $2 each + shipping. I'd say buy two of each, and move forward from there. You will only need that tri-wing screwdriver if you need to open the Gamecube controllers up. Or need to get into one of the various gameboys. Hex. [ Has done things to the SCART -> Component video converter he bought... ]

Ugh. That looks like rust from the shielding to me. I'd keep that unit away from your house if possible, If they were full of it on the 'new' I'm afraid to know what extent they may have mislead you. The good news is once you get the two gamebits, you can open up a bunch of Nintendo and Sega products. It comes in handy at times. Also, does it smell? Honestly, that might give you a clue as to what happened to the thing. Hex. [ Does _NOT_ miss the days of flea market forensics... ]

I can barely understand your posts dude. This is not a text message to your friend, nor is it a LOLcat caption. Most browsers have a decent spell checker built right into them. Turn on that option -- now. We're not English majors here, but think readability. The following Penny Arcade comics wrap this point up nicely. We're here to help Mr. Period Returns The Bad Boys Of Punctuation ANYway... The original Nintendo expansion pack is ideal. I haven't heard of any issues with third party expansion packs, but I have no personal experience with third party packs either. They used to be pretty pricey, but I've seen them drop well into the $10-$15 range last time I saw one in any retro-shop. What I love the best about the N64 is that other than the controllers and game save packs, it is in my mind the embodiment of Nintendo's design it so that it just won't die mindset. Hex. [ Also notes that Nintendo is typically the less 'green' console hardware maker out there a few years back... Who knew?

FS: 32X games, 7800 controller - More to come!
hex65000 replied to eightbit's topic in Buy, Sell, and Trade
PM - ZilLA! Hex. [ Yeah, I don't like wasting good one liners here either... ] -
As a side note if you decide to put stuff up on Game Gavel: While you may only get a few bidders depending on the item, I would suggest that you avoid over pricing as well. I see some auctions just rotting over there because the seller really wants more than the item is, worth or perhaps the top end of what it's worth. Price it to sell, and it'll go. If it gets bid up, bolly for you! Avoid the D.P. syndrome and you'll do just fine, and as a bonus you are helping a small business v/s the abomination that is EBay. Can't see much of a downside there. I pretty much sell only on GGavel, and SoCal Mike is aces. And remember, more stuff = more eyes which means more potential buyers. Hex. [ Oh yeah, this is another something I have to work on as well... Listing stuff. ]

Got a 5200, console only, not sure where to begin
hex65000 replied to Rex Dart's topic in Atari 5200
If you want some inexpensive 5200 commons, shoot me a PM, I've got a ton that I would like to find loving homes for. Hex. [ Hates doing long stints of IT work... ] -
Nope. I think it's DLC for everyone... Link to Gearbox forums on the topic Hex. [ Recalls the Penny Arcade line... "Right through your pants." when he thinks about DLC these days... ]

I'd vote for Longhorn's mods. I'm just sitting back right now until he finishes the one for the 5200 and to give him a chance to catch up on his backlog. The reports I've read on when they are built correctly, the picture looks great. That's what I'm looking for because my 2600 looks like crap on my fancy-schmancy 1080p television. Hex. [ Needs a 'stop time dammit!' power... ]
