  1. Trying to remember an A8 game, it's a scrolling platformer where your character navigates a cave and has a yoyo/whip like weapon for attacking.  You go up and down floors.  Scrolls horizontally and vertically.

  2. Is a Side3 cartridge worth it if your 8bit doesn't have the U1MB mod?  I'm trying to decide between that or the SDrive Max.

    1. x=usr(1536)

      x=usr(1536)

Yes.  I've been running one in several of the A8s here and none of them have U1MBs at the moment.

Bear in mind that the one thing the SDrive Max will not do is cartridge emulation.  If this is important to you, you'll want the SIDE3.

My recommendation would be a FujiNet plus the SIDE3: with both of those, you have full emulation (and then some) of pretty much every common device found on either the SIO bus or cartridge port.  The FujiNet's also priced fairly closely to the SDrive Max, so you may want to consider that as an alternative.

  3. What do you think is the single best year of Garfield comics?  I used to rent all the volumes from the library and the 96-97 ones were my favorite.

Food for Thought was pretty good for the early 2000's

Wow, kinda stopped paying attention in the 80's, there were already like 10 books by the end.

@zetastrike That's a very good question Zeta. Hmmm. Hard to answer. I personally feel when Garfield started to really become successful during the mid-1980's onwards. Jim Davis made the transition of making the Garfield characters more on a cartoonish look and make Garfield more relying on walking on to feet like a human.  I don't have a particular year to say, but I'm thinking mid 80's to early 2000's were the best years for the franchise Zeta.

  4. Today I saw a PAL 50Hz signal on a CRT for the first time.  I was surprised how much more flickery it looked vs the NTSC I'm used to.

    1. x=usr(1536)

      x=usr(1536)

Were you watching it under 60Hz lighting?  If so, that may explain the flicker.

  5.  Do all video games really deserve to be preserved?  I don't think so.

Maybe not ALL...But MOST is a nice idea  (see above)...Completed games I'm thinking...Not my Apple BASIC game from computer class in 1984.

I believe all software should be preserved. It started it's life in digital format and should be remembered in that form. Just because it was flashed to physical hardware and sold doesn't mean it should stay that way. Everything has a shelf life and when that expires, much of this software that could be enjoyed for generations to come will be lost forever. I understand some are against emulation and digital preservation (especially hardcore collectors). However in reality it always was digital and nothing other than code. HC collectors still have their physical copies and that's cool. But many like the convenience of emulation while keeping their systems and carts stored on a shelf for aesthetic purposes (like myself).

Might as well preserve them all. "Those who fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it." and all that. ;)

  6. Aquatron for A8bit.  Excellent game that I never heard of before trying it tonight on a hard disk image.  Highly recommended.

  7. Marauder might be one of my favorite VCS games and it's one I never hear much about.

I've always enjoyed it, but inevitably get a bit bored after a while. Definitely great for short bursts though.

I'm not seeing a downside to any of this.

  9. I had a dream last night where I installed Windows XP on a 286 in my elementary school and it slowed to a crawl.  I had to scramble to find a windows 3.1 install disk to fix it before the teacher came over and found out.

    1. carlsson

      carlsson

IIRC XP needs a 486 or possibly even Pentium to run, but there were some crazy guys many years ago doing slowdown experiments and got one of those to run at 8 MHz. IIRC it took 30 minutes to boot far enough to see a mouse pointer.

    2. thanatos

      thanatos

I installed Windows 2000 server on a Pentium 200 back in the day.  The install process took like 6 hours.  And it wasn't usable at all.

We used to have a few Pentium 166 with 64 MB in the computer club, running Windows 2000 desktop version. It was reasonably OK for web browsing but not MS Office, or if it was vice versa.

  10. The RNG in the original Shining Force is pretty brutal.  I've never whiffed so many attacks in any of the other games in the series.

  11. Got my first coffee grinder tonight.  I can't wait to have fresh ground coffee in the morning.  No more pre-ground for me.

    1. Charlie Cat

      Charlie Cat

@zetastrike I can vouch for that Zeta. I just love the freshly ground smell of roasted coffee beans. I use to go to the Supermarket to have it done all the time when I was a boy. 8^)

And if anyone else says your coffee tastes like dirt, you can say "Well it was ground this morning."

      ^Now that's funny!

      Fresh ground is Awesome!

I still like to mix it up from time to time...Sometimes fresh ground, some pre-ground, some blends...Usually coffee pot but sometimes French Press (If I have the time to clean up afterwards)...

You may wanna throw this in the Coffee Thread.

  12. It's messed up that intellivision homebrew is unobtainable to newcomers.  Homebrew shouldn't be exclusionary.

It was tougher than the brisket from the local bbq joint.  It wasn't overcooked, I think brisket is just like that unless slow smoked.

    4. BigO

      BigO

I haven't noticed it being particularly tough when prepared that way. I know that slicing it "on the diagonal" helps with that (not that I've personally sliced it, I just eat it ?).

  16. Do Jaguar Superfans suffer from stockholm syndrome?  It comes across to me as still attempting to justify their purchase decades after the fact.

I don't take issue with people enjoying it, it's the mental gymnastics when comparing it to its contemporaries that is mind boggling.

It's a game system that has some games I like to play.   Not sure why the Jaguar is any different from any other system people like to play.  All personal preference.

I don't think I'd sweat it over $100. Maybe if it were $200 or more, then I'd want a signature.

Crazy that they were still making SD sets in 2007. I believe my HD one was from 2006.

Depending on where you live, your wallet might be a bit lighter as well. Around here they are making it harder and harder to dispose of CRT sets.

I want a real steering wheel for the Switch. And the Labo doesn't count.

    4. Flojomojo

      Flojomojo

I like that game and will jump on it the moment it launches. I wonder if it's as popular in real Ike as it seems to be online? The Switch port sounds like it does everything right, at last. The 32X port was great but the hardware was stupid. The Genesis version is low res. The PS2 port was really late to North America, and I don't want to talk about the Saturn port.

  25. Does anyone else find the RGB obsession in present day retro gaming really obnoxious? Like some of these guys would rather chop their thumbs off than use anything lower than component on a BVM. When did this become so important?

      youxia

...having said that, yeah, the PVM-or-bust crowd can be quite tedious. Composite/SVideo is actually a better choice for some games, plus any decent CRT TV is enough, no need to spend hundreds of bucks because some trendy obsessives said so.

fact crt is nearly instantly updated by the older machines, and lcd frame at a time with processing ruins gameplay, scan lines improve the picture on old consoles that relied on it to get defined and wonderful graphics.. todays screen make it look blockier than it really was

      digdugnate

on the whole CRT vs LCD debate, for me it's more a matter of what i have available. My TI994A and Atari 2600 look just fine on my el cheapo $99 walmart tv, lol.
