  1. Why do nintendo fans hate arcade games? The anger over the announcement of online play for Mario Bros was bizarre. I was told its a shallow, repetitive game that plays like crap and has 30 seconds of content.

I've come to realize that I actually like other people in person... but I tend to think I dislike people "online." Make of that what you will.

      Skippy B. Coyote

I agree with BydoEmpire, on both counts lol I consider myself a Nintendo fan (possibly even a fanboy) and I really enjoy classic arcade games. I also get along with just about everyone in real life, but can be a touch rough around the edges online.

    4. Reaperman

      Reaperman

It's always felt a little wrong to me to play Mario Bros on a non-Atari system. I should loudly complain.

  2. Discovered Space Attack from M Network last night on the harmony. Really fun game.

I always forget about the VCS versions of those Intellivision games. The Atari Flashback Portable smacked some sense back into me.

      retrorandy

Dark Cavern rocked! I used to play the heck out of it as a kid. In my opinion much more playable than Night Stalker. I liked the Adventures of TRON too. They definitely had their actor together as far as good game ports. Can't say the same for some of the Parker Brothers and Coleco ports to the VCS.

    4. save2600

      save2600

Cool to see support for Adventures of Tron. Always wanted to like that game, but always thought it gets old/repetitive quick. Love me some Deadly Discs though!

  3. Does anyone else find the 7800 kind of lame? If the A8bit was a giant leap ahead of the VCS, the 7800 was maybe half a step ahead of it. I just don't get the appeal.

Centipede alone makes the 7800 worthwhile to own. It's the killer app for the 7800. It's all the reason I need to own the system.

    3. Cobra Kai

      Cobra Kai

Everyone hates the sound chip, it was really an inexcusable part of the design. Graphically I find it rather pleasant. Stuff like Dig Dug and Donkey Kong are pretty nice looking games, but nothing really holds up to the NES

    4. jaybird3rd

      jaybird3rd

FWIW, the original 7800 design included better sound, but somewhere along the way it was dropped. Adding a POKEY chip to every cartridge just for sound is incredibly wasteful, which explains why only two (first-party) games did it.

The XM will also add better sound, but who knows how many people will get to use it.

  4. Does anyone else find the RGB obsession in present day retro gaming really obnoxious? Like some of these guys would rather chop their thumbs off than use anything lower than component on a BVM. When did this become so important?

      youxia

...having said that, yeah, the PVM-or-bust crowd can be quite tedious. Composite/SVideo is actually a better choice for some games, plus any decent CRT TV is enough, no need to spend hundreds of bucks because some trendy obsessives said so.

    3. _The Doctor__

      _The Doctor__

fact crt is nearly instantly updated by the older machines, and lcd frame at a time with processing ruins gameplay, scan lines improve the picture on old consoles that relied on it to get defined and wonderful graphics.. todays screen make it look blockier than it really was

    4. digdugnate

      digdugnate

on the whole CRT vs LCD debate, for me it's more a matter of what i have available. My TI994A and Atari 2600 look just fine on my el cheapo $99 walmart tv, lol.

Gratz on the Space Harrier. How much are they going for NIB? I maybe would have sold it then bought a CIB copy and had the game and some money. I also saw the stuff about Shantae, inspired me to buy Pirate's Curse. It's pretty fun!

  6. I find that I greatly appreciate and prefer European youtubers now. I'm American and I can't stand most US youtubers because they're so high on Nintendo at the expense of nearly everything else. I'm a 26 year old American, yet I know more about the Amiga, Spectrum, C64, MSX, etc than a lot of the popular personalities.

    3. TwentySixHundred

      TwentySixHundred

I believe all software should be preserved. It started it's life in digital format and should be remembered in that form. Just because it was flashed to physical hardware and sold doesn't mean it should stay that way. Everything has a shelf life and when that expires, much of this software that could be enjoyed for generations to come will be lost forever. I understand some are against emulation and digital preservation (especially hardcore collectors). However in reality it always was digital and nothing other than code. HC collectors still have their physical copies and that's cool. But many like the convenience of emulation while keeping their systems and carts stored on a shelf for aesthetic purposes (like myself).

Might as well preserve them all. "Those who fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it." and all that. ;)

@jaybird3rd that's the one. I spent about an hour with it last night. The games that don't use diagonals are great on it, but I had a hard time with Xevious and Bosconian. It was hard to hit diagonals with that stick. The video output is surprisingly good for composite. I'd say it's worth it for the Pac Man games, Galaxian, Galaga, and Dig Dug. Just don't pay more than $20. A big improvement over the Jakks p'n'p's.

    4. jaybird3rd

      jaybird3rd

      Thanks for the report!

I'll probably pick one up if I can find it cheap. It might be fun to strip the board out and mount it inside a better controller. The original "blocky Pac-Man" controller doesn't look too comfortable.

  12. Why is it people always wait until there's a 100% chance of rain to put their CRTs out on the curb? We could have a 6 month drought and no one would put them out, but it looks like a downpour, "Geez, I better put my old TV out on the curb. F anyone who might want it." I saw a great Toshiba yesterday that I would have grabbed if it wasn't drenched.

Maybe you're looking at it backwards, maybe CRTs sitting out in the elements cause rainstorms, much like freshly washed cars.
