$700? That's it? I'm surprised it's that low. I've seen beaten up loose carts go for $300. There's no limit when your target market is collectards. What else are they going to spend it on, their social life?

Convert .com or .rom to .xex or .exe?
zetastrike replied to zetastrike's topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
Full sound! Thanks so much. It's a great port, pretty difficult. Wasn't able to approach my hi scores from the VCS version. We'll see if that changes. -
Nice thread, not what I was expecting. I'm 24 and just out of grad school. I've been an avid lifter/exerciser for years through college. I make a point to to the gym at least 4 days a week after work. I eat lots of fresh fruit and vegetables/plant proteins. I tend to only eat meat at dinner and I only eat whole grain bread products. Take out is rare. I get frustrated when I see people in my age group who are soft/out of shape/eating poorly/unhappy. It can be avoided with some effort. Too many people say things like "I can't" or "It's too late". It's your quality of life, you only live once. And all this is while I'm an avid fan of Atari and Sega. Nothing says you can't be nerdy, fit, and satisfied with your self at the same time.

Convert .com or .rom to .xex or .exe?
zetastrike replied to zetastrike's topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
Wow, that was quick. Thanks a bunch for the help! I'll fool around with it this weekend. CC is my favorite VCS game, so I can't wait to play a proper version. Ask and ye shall receive.... -
Convert .com or .rom to .xex or .exe?
zetastrike replied to zetastrike's topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
I looked at that thread, but I'm not clear what the solution is, or if there is one. I was really looking forward to playing Crystal Castles XE. That cart rarely turns up and goes for way more than I'm willing to spend. Please have patience with me. I'm a novice with this stuff. I jumped feet first into A8bit hardware after loving A8winplus. -
I love reading RG because every issue teaches me about something I've never seen before. Its EU centric point of view also means it isn't a giant Nintendo circlejerk, like a US based magazine would likely be. I love reading about the Spectrum, CPC, C64, ST, etc.

Using my SIO2PC and 130XE, I fired up the dump of XE Crystal Castles from Fandal's site and for some reason, there are no sound effects and the nutcracker tune has completely wrong notes. No other game I've tried has this problem. Rather than try to hunt down another .xex file on the web, are there any utilities out there that can take any file format and convert it to .xex?

Is this homemade AC Adapter good for a 130XE AND 800XL
zetastrike replied to zetastrike's topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
Thanks for the info. I wasn't aware 8 bits had a color pot. I always thought that was just a VCS thing. There's no buzzing noise. The adapter works just fine on an 800XL, so it's probably just the pot. I'll get on that tonight and let you know what happens. -
I have an hand-soldered AC adapter that I use with my 800XL and my 130XE. Its output is 5V, 2000mA, with a positive center pole. I got it because my original boat anchor brick blew up and fried my first 800XL. It works with absolutely no issue with the 800XL. I just got a 130XE last week that came with another boat anchor. I'll never use one of those again, so I was able to run it off of the homemade one. The only issue is that some colors look wrong on it, mainly some blues. The BASIC boot up screen is purple instead of blue and some other shades of blue in games look a little off compared to how they look with the 800XL. Is this adapter ok to use with the 130XE? Could that be the cause of the off-blues?

I tracked down a CX-40 today at the mall. I chose it over a Gemstick, which also seemed pretty nice. After an hour or so of playtime, I like it. It is a lot different from my flashback stick. I like how the CX-40 stick has a shorter range of motion and the button has a better feel. The stick is easier to push, at least to me. The button clicks nicely. It's slightly bigger, making it more comfy. How does the Best gold stick work in comparison? Does it have sound/tactile feedback like a microswitch? Does it do away with the plastic core? I worry about breaking that. I might buy one of those for my birthday.

I just started fiddling with my SIO2PC unit and noticed when I first power on my 800XL with the cable connected, the screen is covered with random messy yellow graphics which remain there until I hit the reset button, then it goes to the regular startup screen and loads whatever disk image I've mounted. From that moment on, everything is normal. I haven't found any explanation from searching. This doesn't happen when I play a cartridge game.

Bought a SIO2PC unit from him. He shipped it quickly, it got here quickly, and it works. Great member and would recommend buying from him.

I'm going with the XEGS. It feels like a much greater leap over the VCS than the 7800 feels over it (even though the XEGS itself came out after). The games are a lot more exciting to me. I like the 7800 fine, but it's library felt like a lot of the same games we already saw, but with slightly prettier graphics and worse sound. The homebrew that's been released is leveling the playing field though.

I'll go with Ms Pac-man because of the variety in mazes and moving fruit without the difficulty of the (still excellent) Jr Pac-man. The A8bit versions are my favorites. The colors look really nice and bright and the sound effects don't grate on my nerves.

Would this allow for playing of disk images without a disk drive? You would connect it to a PC and mount a image and play it that way?

I've been an Atari owner for a couple years now, but have never owned a real CX40, just a Flashback stick and two Wico Bat handles. Does anyone have advice on what to look out for with CX40s? I see a lot of clones on amazon, but many of the reviewers complain that they broke in less than a day. Are originals more durable? The game shop in my mall has a lot of them. Are they worth owning, at the end of the day?

I fired up my 800XL the other night and it got me thinking about how boneheaded Atari's business model seems to me. I never got why they always offered more than one computer at a time. First, you could buy the really nice 800 or the stripped down, kind of useless 400. They positioned it as entry level/games focused, but would anyone who just wanted to play games buy a comparatively expensive computer back in the 80s when they could just get a VCS or INTV for less? Then they pulled the same thing with the XL series. Two machines that are essentially the same, but one with too little ram and no monitor output. Again, why? People in the 80s had to have been confused and put off by it. Why take the time to decide which Atari to buy when Commodore did it for you? Would just offering one option as "The Atari Computer" have made much of a difference? This isn't taking the price war into account.

I've found myself torn between emulation and real hardware. I only have a handful of sacred cow pieces of hardware in my collection that I'll never get rid of, the 800XL, GEN/SCD, 3DO, and Saturn. Recently I got into the PSP and use that to emulate some of the consoles I've sold in the past. I use my PC for things like the PC Engine, SNES, and Atari ST that the PSP doesn't handle as well. I ended up getting rid of my NES, SNES, PS1, and PS2. There's been times where I've contemplated getting rid of all the consoles that I can't emulate well enough, but I feel like I would kick myself for it eventually. Especially with how outrageously priced the A8bit series and 3DO have become, I'd never be able to get them back if I wanted them again. So it really depends on how attached I am to a system and how expensive is it to buy for it. Dropping the NES and SNES was a no brainer, as I wasn't enamored with either and games are too expensive. The PSP allowed me to play PS1 games more conveniently and the PS2 didn't really gel with me. OTOH, the VCS games are so cheap I couldn't not hold onto it. Obviously, emulation is perfect for those systems I don't plan on buying, like the MSX, PCE, ST, Colecovision.

Nintendo GBA BUYING GUIDE & Recommended Games
zetastrike replied to Metal Jesus's topic in Classic Console Discussion
I really liked the Mega Man Zero games. Very challenging even in comparison to the other MM games, but I enjoyed them. If you enjoyed playing as Zero in X4-X6, you'll love them. I'm glad someone else liked a GBA NFS, I have Porsche Unleashed and I love it for some reason. It's just cool to see 3D driving games on a 2001 handheld. V-Rally 3 does it even better. There are a lot of games for the GBA where the devs went nuts with programming and it's fun to see. I'm not sure if Nintendo ever intended for 3D graphics when they were designing it. I also prefer Castlevania Circle of the Moon to SotN simply because it's a lot more challenging and balanced. It has nice music too. The DKC games, to me, are better as portable games than console. The GBA ports are fun to run through. The Crash Bandicoot platformers are fun and cheap. Moto Racer Advance is a fun motorbike racer. The GBA is really fun to buy for. The games are largely cheap and fun to discover.- 12 replies

I've been messing around with MAME (0.171) for the past week and have had a hard time finding games that work. I get the message that the rom is missing files. None of them used CHD. I'm not asking for any roms, but I was wondering if there's any way to take a non working rom and fix it. I have metered internet, so I can't afford to keep downloading the same games from different places. Or is MAME really that much of a crap shoot?

zetastrike's FS Thread (consoles, imports, games)
zetastrike replied to zetastrike's topic in Buy, Sell, and Trade
New Item: Up here is my old GBA SP AGS-101. The unit is pretty scuffed, as you can see, but works without issue. Charger is not included, as I only have one and my main SP needs it. Asking $32 shipped -
Will Japanese Super 32X Cartridges Work On US 32X?
zetastrike replied to thetallguy24's topic in Classic Console Discussion
I believe VRD is region locked, but if you have an everdrive I think the Jp rom can be patched to work on a NA console. Search around Sega-16. I think there was a thread about it there. To answer the OP, it's a total crapshoot whether a Jp game will work on a NA setup. Some game roms are idential between the two regions, others are locked in a similar manner to Genesls/MD games. There's only one Jp exclusive though and it's probably not worth importing. VRD is the only game I can think of where the Jp version is worth getting. -
I just received a GBA SP from Fujiskunk. The price was great, he packed it well, and shipped it quickly. 10/10 would do business with again

Which Sega Master System flash cart should I get?
zetastrike replied to Mitkraft's topic in Classic Console Discussion
I meant that since the Genesis can play SMS games, it makes more sense to get a Mega Everdrive for the Genesis. With it, you can play every SMS game, nearly every Genesis game, and every 32X game (provided you have a 32X). From a value point of view, it's much better than getting a Master Everdrive. If you have absolutely no desire to get into the Genesis, then I would go with the Master Everdrive, since the ease of use is so great. On top of that, dbelectronics offers a Powerbase converter that includes the FM chip, so you could plug the Master Everdrive into it, plug that into the Genesis, and play SMS games with FM sound. This setup would require a Genesis, though.
