  1. Motherboard barrel batteries suck.

  2. Booting MS-DOS from 8" disks, something that feels a lot more satisfying than it probably should.

I didn't know MS-DOS was ever released on 8" disks... or was it converted?  Either way, pretty cool!

I found a few articles on interfacing generic 8” drives with IBM PCs through a quick Google search. I didn’t find anywhere that explicitly stated that 77 track 1.2mb 8” disks will work with 1.2mb 5.25” disk configurations, but I did find a 77 track 1.2mb 3.5” format that will apparently work with most standard floppy controllers, so I assume there isn’t much needed to get an 8” drive working on a PC. From there you could use the SYS command to make the disk bootable, then boot DOS from the disk.

      I've got two ways currently,

1: Following this article and doing pretty much what bluejay said,

      2: PC-9801 + PC-9881, it may be a localization but hey it's still MS-DOS.

Both are fun, both are silly, and only the second is practical.

  3. Playing VIC-20 lately and I found an Ultima game, Escape from Mount Drash, which I didn't even realize I owned - well I guess I haven't played all of them yet, at least now the VIC has some use...

I think it is still is valuable, if it is an original.

      Iwantgames:)

It's a crap game with nothing to do with Ultima except they slapped the name on it. It's quite rare tho so yea valuable to collectors

It used character graphics for all the artwork! It's hilarious! Well, maybe not to anyone who bought it full price.

  4. Got my PiDP-11 kit, woohoo! Now the 8 can have a (plastic case) friend

Thanks! I have to work half the day but eh, at least I get the other half with family.

  5. Man, I thought my C64 was dead... then I remembered when using my VIC-20 A/V cable that you have to put the audio where the video goes and vice versa. /facepalm

    1. carlsson

      carlsson

Nope, that is not correct at all. Perhaps you're using your Genesis A/V cable where you have to reverse audio and video to get a B&W image on the C64?

  6. Found a 7800 for $40, here's to hoping it works

  7. I got a DEC Alpha off some guy... well, I have no clue what to do with this lol

  8. Got the 128, went from fuzz on the screen to a black screen with some lines by resoldering and swapping a fuse in the PSU - maybe tomorrow when I'm not so tired I'll try reseating ICs and checking the computer itself

  9. I got a boxed Commodore 128 for $80, better find than the Studio II (and another tube of 4164s just in case lol)

      cybercylon

How is ReplayFX going? Decided not to go. I remember finding a box C128 at Goodwill for $10 or so many years ago.

what are you going to do with all that ram?

  10. Biorythm on the Studio II may have been a bad idea for my first cartridge, it's neat and all but is it even a game? I don't know what to think of it lol

^"Best Pong-esque game...you can actually beat the game..." I forgot about Video Olympics on the Atari. XD

Still, though, Handball is probably some of the most fun you're likely to have on the Studio II. :P

    3. BurritoBeans

      BurritoBeans

I've picked up Tennis/Squash and Spacewar too, gonna keep biorythm just to have it but I'm happy I didn't spend more than $10 for it.

Kind of a chore to find ways to have fun with this system, but rewarding.

  11. The first thing I buy at ReplayFX is a RCA Studio II, am I going crazy?

      BassGuitari

What's crazy is that they actually had a Studio II.

What's also crazy is that the Studio II is actually kind of fun, in small doses.

Why am I not shocked BassGuitari showed up when Studio II was mentioned? :)

  15. "Hey Beans, uninstall your GTA V because Rockstar took away singleplayer modding!" well crap, I never used it in the first place and they already have my money so what am I supposed to prove by doing nothing?

  16. The bit of me that likes mainframes asked "What if I had a PDP-8?" and then I found out that the PiDP-8 exists. Well, hello there new project...

One of my other retro computing friends also has particular feelings for the PDP-8 series. I hope you'll have fun!

  17. Egh, I'm attempting to program stuff with my ZX81 and even with the RAM pack duct-taped onto the system it still crashes if I move the thing a bit - I think I need a better solution...

There are internal RAM upgrades which would be more reliable and would give you more memory as well. I'm thinking of trying one with my T/S 1000.

  18. Needed to grab a present for a friend of mine beside three bags of funyuns and $20 so I threw in a copy of Rare Replay - the dude says he wanted to get into some older titles and liked Battletoads Arcade and Perfect Dark at my place anyways, so I hope that was a decent choice.

  19. Got the trackball in the multicade - an Ultimarc U-Trak - working properly after a while. It feels so good to play Centipede with a proper trackball at home, now to break the thing in...

I saw the B-52's at Irvine Meadows (R.I.P.) in the Summer of 1989. My car broke down on the way home at 1 in the morning and I was stuck on the side of the 91 freeway for almost 5 hours. Good times.

  23. I never thought I'd spend so much on a keyboard, but I bought a Topre Realforce RGB as a new gaming keyboard to replace this Razer Anansi - hopefully the thing is worth it...

    1. jaybird3rd

      jaybird3rd

You should pick up a Unicomp Model M keyboard. You'll probably never have to buy another keyboard again.

    2. BurritoBeans

      BurritoBeans

Yeah, I was going to grab a Unicomp Model M or the 122-key terminal one at first - I love the old Model Ms to death - but I decided against it as I want something linear for gaming as well. Still, if the Topre dies quicker than I hear they do or if I have $100 sitting around with nothing better to do I'd love to pick up a Unicomp sometime here.

  24. Got Corpse Party: Back To School edition - first 3DS game I've bought since I bought a New 3DS. Also, no more braces which is very nice.

  25. Well, grabbed Battlefield 1 with the DLC pass and it got the metal case for being the early edition or whatever - singleplayer is entertaining enough, just got to wait for a 2.7GB update to play multiplayer.
