Well, I've calmed down now. I'm surprised it made it with the case intact. However, it only has 16K so I need to track down some memory.
Check your messages. :-)

Got my UAV board and mounted it on one of my 600XL's, triple checked everything because she boots, but the video rolls left to right and up to down. No monitor controls can stop it ( and if it could I'd have multiple READY prompts stacked up.) and the color looks very faint.
Before I try to resurrect one of my other 600XL's to try it out on them, any suggestions from this knowledgeable group? It's not the Commie 1702, it works perfectly with my 1200XL. Checked all my connection with a VOM, all good.....

What is the jumper configuration?

with a real cart you can load the translator as I described in a translate kit thread and then hot plug the real cartridge and play/run the real cart and it's all good
can't do it with the ultimate cart.... the only fix is firmware fix.....it would be worth it since a number of persons have mentioned it in round about terms.... the work around is a bit convoluted,,,, using atarimax workbook to create an os-b and cart ad using it in the ultimate...just to get tomatoes thrown.. howsa boutsa atr.. loader

run as fast and far as he can
The Uno cart can already load an alternative OS for ATR emulation, couldn't this be extended to loading OS-B for certain programs? Maybe use .osb as a file extension so it knows, or use a different boot key instead of RETURN.

To be fair... DOS 3 wasn't all that bad.... it was a silly error that sealed it's doom......... it was fixed... there's a thread about it and how to tell the differences between the fixed and not fixed versions.
I used DOS 3 for several years, even after I bought the US Doubler and SpartaDOS. Never had an issue with it.

If the free shipping from China was really the problem, why didn't Radio Shack open up a distributor there and ship out from China? Use the US distributor when someone is really to get a part quickly, but use China for free shipping.

Since the 4050 chip is normally socketed on both the 400 and 600XL, it is simply a matter of pulling that chip and plugging the UAV in it's place. Only one solder connection is required to pick up the color signal to complete the video input connections. As for the video outputs, this can be as simple as cutting off the ends on one side of some standard RCA cables and inserting the stripped wires into the UAV's terminal block, and then fishing the cables out wherever possible.
So bottom line is that in the simplest installation only one solder joint is required. And you end up with the best quality S-Video signal that you're ever going to see coming out of your A8 ready to be plugged into the 1084.
EDIT: And let's face it, using a demodulator to convert the RF out into something that the 1084 could use will look like total crap in comparison. And to top it off the the UAV is only $25.

I need to check my 600xl, but I think I plugged in the UAV and wired an SVideo jack to the terminals on the UAV. I don't remember soldering anything.

Digging through my revived MIO hard drive, I came across a BBS Express PRO node-list from July 1994. Came across a couple notable entries. Notably node #244 (mine!) and #402 THE BATES MOTEL / aka MacRorie
And a bunch of others in Canada and Netherlands that I was using Express_Net networking with. I seem to recall in the interview with Norman on the Antic Podcast he lost his node? if he meant the node number well, there it is...Attached the converted text file if anyone wants to scan for others they remember!
probbs.txtA long time ago I bought an MIO and hard drive set up, which came with BBS Express Pro. I was excited to see if I could find out who originally had it, unfortunately, node #404 is blank in your list.

I am attempting to create a simple IDE/CF interface for the 1088XEL's MPBI port (Mini-Parallel Bus Interface). The idea is to have it be supported by the U1MB BIOS in some fashion that is similar to the Side2 cart, but without all the bells and whistles this cart has (sans SDX and R-Time8). So to do this, it appears that loading the Incognito PBI BIOS into the U1MB might give us a simple software solution, since it only requires that the 8 basic IDE registers be accessed and mapped into the appropriate area (see FJC's comment below quoted from an earlier discussion Link Here)
Would this be something current U1M installed machines could use to hang a CF card off of the PBI/ECI, therefore freeing up the cartridge port?

I just checked it out and I like the wiki aspect. I'll have to dig in a bit more to get a better feel for what was done, but I could certainly see this working for the XEL docs.
Another option is readthedocs.org or Sphinx. Both use a git repo to hold the website, and changes can be pushed/pulled with the regular git tools. http://firesidefiction.comrecently switched to this workflow, here's their repo.
The beauty of this process is that everything can be hosted by Github. I use Pelican to create my https://gtia.comwebsite and host the website and the repo on Github.

OK; time to get my toes wet;
I have spent my life (over 30 years) coding on Unix boxes, often under cross assembly.
I am very comfortable with the "Unix Way". As much work as possible in ASCII files,
Vim for editing, small tools each doing one job, source files, object files, linkers, all tied together
with Makefiles, macro generators, little specialised code generators (e.g. in perl). I like macros.
I do NOT like monoliths, but I guess I just said that.

My modern Unix is (L)ubuntu, and I'm running Altirra under Wine.
So; what assembler (and other tools) are recommended for someone like me?
(Most of the software lists appear very PC/Windows oriented)
BugBear
I'm just learning assembler, and settled on MADS. I've compiled it under Linux and OS X, and use VIM with syntax highlighting. Right now I use a simple mads SOURCE to compile since I only have source code in one file.

If I have the original batch, how do I get the latest CPLD code? I have a USB blaster to upgrade it.

Also, what's the answer to the start, select, option keys?
Tap the top right of the screen and they'll appear.

I discovered there are no grounds anywhere in this old house (ca. 1920), so for my workbench I'm borrowing the ground from the TV coax which I'm not using for anything else but it does go to a grounding rod outside.
Don't worry though, I'll be rewiring the whole house.<Insert Michigan joke here>

There is something wrong with AA last days on my Android phone. Posts do not want to save so it looks like a problem. When i press post again it still hangs stuck. But now it seems it posted my msg three times. Sorry for that.
Same thing happens on the iPhone. After I get the first error, I assume it posted. :-)

I tried to look for pricing of doing a batches of boxes and packaging for these games last year. Just been trying to find someone who does not require you pay for a 1000 at a time. Probably won't sell more than a quarter of that. What Video 61 does is a clam shell with some artwork, and a laminated instruction folded sheet.
You may want to discuss logistics with Jacobus and ask how he handled doing Dungeon Hunt.

This thread is INFLATEing in ways I never intended. Maybe I should have the moderator let me rename this thread "history of treachery, hacking and piracy."
I got the latest modification to speed up INLFATE. I got that 27K game binary to decompress from a 16K cart area into RAM about 3.0 seconds, about 0.5 seconds faster from what I started with.
Using compression is important because it is allowing to games into the next cartridge size smaller, for example a 32K game can be put into a 16K cartridge, or to add more stuff onto the bigger cartridges. There may be pricing and availability issues with different cartridge sizes and types.
With today's technology, there is no need to resort to any tricks. Use an AtariMax cart, STM324 microcontroller, floppy disk, etc. By putting 128KB on the cart, you game can run on lower specced machines (>64K) too. Allows more time to be spent on development and less on deployment, while increasing profit margins. As Jon said, using EPROMs have to be "the most expensive storage medium known to man".

I looked at pay-per-download sites last year because I am looking to reboot my PC software business and had nothing to do with the Atari. I am currently finish some smaller Atari Games and will be working on software for other platforms in a few months. I will see what type of success I have with selling PC software before making any further decisions. If you know any good sites, let me know. I have to factor in monthly fees and what percentage do they get per download. Countries and US states are starting up a tax on digital good, called "digital sales tax." It has been proposed to the New York State legislator here.
Easiest route is making games for iOS, although people don't like paying more than a buck per game. Apple takes care of everything. For the PC, look at getting your games on Steam.
If you still want to do it yourself, PayPal or Gumroad both make it easy to sell digital goods.
As for the digital tax, it's not any more work than what is happening now with selling physical goods. Video61 collects sales tax from MN residents (Or they should be, although there is no reference to this on their order page). Customers from other states are responsible for paying their own tax. In Ohio, it's a question on the state income tax form.
You only have to worry about sales tax to customers in the state you reside.

Some notes:
* all the instruments where pretty off in respect to a harmonic replay (so the source mod file samples are based on different keys (like ivop said: not uncommon))
This sums up the problem with first version. It's not the individual instruments being out of tune with themselves. It's the fact that each instrument is playing in a different key.

Over time my Pac-Man skills have not been increasing with my age. Under Mame and on the 20th Reunion Ms. Pac-Man/Galaga I've been playing the speed up versions.
Is there a speed up version available for the 8-bit versions?

Compression helps keep the costs down with the cartridges. Many more games can be fit into these 16K cartridges that Video61 has in stock that sale for $39.95. Uses 2 8K Eproms. Free shipping within United States. If not, games will need to go onto bigger cartridges that cost more in parts, need to work with bank switching, and more time to put together. Flashcarts, or bigger Eproms pushes the prices higher.
If I was doing a cartridge release I'd be looking at piggybacking off the work of Electrotrains and use the STM32F4 as the cartridge:
128K and a cost of ~$13.

This is so amazingly impressive - and very useful to me, as I've been working on an iOS homage to Star Raiders called "Zylon Defenders" and this will prove invaluable in emulating the swarming behavior of Zylon fighters.
We're going into alpha testing later this month - let me know if anyone here would be interested in testing. Requires a reasonably recent iOS device; iPad or iPhone.
Thanks again, Lorenz!
Sure, I'd love to test. (iPhone 6+).

I do not expect them to change their opinion on this topic. Once Peter mentioned this was a revenue source for him, his position started to make some sense. I may not agree with it, but I can understand the piracy concern if you need the money.
While some people have access to cartridge ripping devices, I know that I do not. Therefore, their cartridge-only approach gives them some security. It is not as much as they think it does, but it does offer them some protection. I needed help from a friend when I wanted cartridges ripped so I could put them on my Ultimate Cart.
It is their game to do as they please. Luckily, I am not a Tempest fan so I would not have bought it anyway. It will be a harder decision when they create a game again that I am interested in. At this point, I do not want to purchase a cartridge-only title in case I have to use only Altirra for my 8-bit gaming enjoyment.
Bob C
Their stance on the subject is why I won't be purchasing it either. I really, really, REALLY want this game, but the lack of a cheaper digital only version is stopping me from buying it.
The last time this came up with Venture I ended up buying the ColecoVision version.
