Nothing to do with Google Drive, this is a bug in recent versions of the Intel D3D11 graphics driver. It crashes with a null pointer deference if you use a pixel shader that has an interpolant using half precision. Workaround is either to disable Direct3D 11 (launch with /d3d9 and then change in Options), or use 4.10-test2 or above which has a workaround for this driver bug.

Geez, I should have tested it outside of Google Drive! I switched to D3D9 which fixed the issue.

Now to go check out 4.10-test2! Thanks!!

  2. I like to keep my Atari stuff in my Google Drive so I can access it from multiple machines. Unfortunately, for some reason Altirra crashes when running on my laptop from Google Drive but it runs without issue on my desktop.

I use portable mode so my settings are also synced, so I'm thinking that might be part of the problem.

When I run on my laptop, Altirra throws up this dialog box:

Although it does write the AltirraCrash.mdmp file. The emulator continues running in the background until I close the box. Any ideas what to check first? I've attached my settings file and the dump file. Google Drive is mounted at M:

Byte magazine published 287 issues from September 1975 through July 1998. It covered all platforms, from the RGS 008A in issue #1 to IBM ThinkPads running Windows 98 by the end. In the middle, there was lots of Atari and Commodore and TRS-80, the fun '80s microcomputers. I wanted to create an edit of the entire run of Byte — with only the Atari-related articles.

I did so by downloading VintageApple's set of complete Byte PDFs using wget. (https://vintageapple.org/byte/) I used pdfgrep to find occurrences of the word "Atari" and pdftk to extract just those pages. Then the time-consuming part: editing by hand. Removing ads with the word Atari and incidental mentions. Also re-adding pages that were relevant but missed — e.g. a 10-page article that didn't use the word Atari on every page.

Byte's 23-year run encompassed 287 issues — 103,973 pages. I found significant mention of Atari in 101 issues — 729 pages. So, 0.7% of Byte's pages had some Atari content.

You can read the best 729 pages in Byte here: https://archive.org/details/byte-magazine-atari-articles

I'm an idiot now, I saw your Tik Tok of the steps you took, and didn't even put together your voice from the Podcast and the video on Tik Tok. ?

    This looks amazing!

  4. This sounds like a cool project, 80 columns is what I've always wanted. However, wouldn't hooking a Pi Zero up to the joystick port and writing an XEP80 emulator for the Pi be a more powerful and flexible solution? Full color ANSI graphics for starters. All for <$10.

  5. Along with the discussion of what cards would be used with it, I look across all of the cartridge hardware devices I have strewn about. The Veronica Cart and the AtariMax USB cart are two that would be nice to have as a cards, freeing up the cartridge port. I would also like an IDE+ card, along with 80 columns. There are a ton of devices that would be pretty awesome. The big issue is the size of the 1090 box, that thing looks really tall. ?

Which is better in the long run? A supposedly new Atari 65XE from Mexico or a used Atari 800 XL?

Will the capacitors and power supply in that supposedly new Atari 65 XE still be any good after all these years of sitting in a box?

Or would it be better to get the older Atari 800XL and upgrade the capacitors and power supply at greater cost?

Or would I have to upgrade the capacitors and power supply of that Atari 65XE anyways cause of their age?

Also, with that used Atari 800 XL the keyboard may need to be replaced and some other parts may also be warned and in need of replacing, if not now soon enough.

With the Atari 65 XE the cartridge slot is in bad place which can in the long term be a pain and cause problems and the keyboard is from all I've read not all that great.

So chime in, which one would you get and why?

    The 800XL:

    • It has a PBI
    • There is a chance it is socketed. If not, the motherboard is a lot tougher than the XE versions
    • Capacitors aren't an issue
    • Power supply is easy enough to make with a 2amp USB charger
    • I prefer the 800XL keyboard. ?
    • The video is easy to fix

I have a very dumb Mad Pascal question...

Do you actually write the code on an Atari? I've been hunting around and I found the github page for it but I don't see anything like an .atr, .xex. com file etc.

You write code on a Windows/Linux/macOS machine, and compile for the Atari. Getting the executable over to the Atari is an exercise for the reader. ?

You'll get heated replies from users in the USA as they didn't have the BBC in schools, they had the Apple IIe. In the UK and Australia/Tasmania we got the BBC and its outstanding Econet implementation.

Was the BBC sold in the US?

My old high school in Ohio had a lab of them, this was the late 80s/early 90s. I have no idea what model they were, but I saw it on a visit after I graduated. All of them were networked to use the floppy drive (or two?) that was connected to one of them. I was blown away.

Alas, I don't know what happened to them. Probably shipped off to the dump. ?

I sold my ATARI 800XL about 28 years ago, so one is until last week new to the field (again)! Anyway, I purchased a composite video to HDMI convertor but the image quality is quite bad, with lines on the screen etc.  You can read everything the ATARI sends, but it's like there are clearly alternating lines. Is this normal or is something wrong? I read a a bit about these boxes and I was expecting some issues, but not quite on the level of this.

    Here's probably the simplest upgrade:

You'll need an Svideo cable for your Atari though. And you lose composite video.

If you feel like doing more, then next up would be the UAV upgrade:

Had the same problem with a Zero W , a quick look and it showed it was at 100% CPU all the time, like

you I moved it to a Pi 3B and all was fine,

That's weird, I'm running atari800 on a Pi A without issue. But, I'm not launching X, so maybe that's the difference.

There are a lot of great things about Fujinet including it's printer facilities, but I'd rather print to my vintage printers and writing I do for magazines and whatnot gets sent in rich text format converted from the Atari Last Word processor I use and sent via e-mail, not PDF. But I do use Fujinet to get the documents to my PC from the Atari now, nice and wireless without the need for software running on the PC like with SIO2PC and PC virtual drive software like APE or AspeQT.

What's your process for this? Save to a disk image and open the image up in Altirra or something else?

But with side2, I like the fact that it provides sdx, provides a "hdd" permanently and my sio2sd is hooked up when I want to provide an additional disk, and it works, it has no issues and no special steps.

I use drives >5 on my Side2/Incognito/IDE+ addons. That way drives 1-4 are always available with whatever else I want to do.

What’s the best S-Video to HDMI converter available that can take advantage of this upgrade?

Like others have said, the Sophia 2 will get you DVI output.

With my Incognito 800, I've been playing around with a Retrotink Pro. A little pricing, but the HDMI output is outstanding. It almost looks like I'm using an emulator on my LCD.

Keep in mind this oddity... the same joystick in the same port works perfect for Donkey Kong but does not work for PacMan.

Donkey Kong may read the joystick differently than Pacman. Start up basic and run this code:

    10 ? STICK(0)
    20 GOTO 10

Now, move the joystick to the different directions. These are the values you should get for the different directions:

         10 14 6
           \ | /
            \ |/
         11--15--7
            / |\
           / | \
          9 13 5

    The AtariBits Blog

These forum topics tend to get real messy, real fast, and quite frankly I'm tired of all the off topic posting that occurs. So blogging brings control back to me.

It's been nice while it lasted, and I met some great people because of it, but I'll be doing a lot less posting in AtariAge from this point forward.

    Take care everyone :) .

Which area?  I'm out in Maumee.  And christ...how many 800s do you have?

I'm about 1.5 hours south of Maumee.

And, I don't know, 7 or 8? A school district near me had an 800 lab, and I happened to be at the auction when they were getting rid of them so I got a bunch for a song.

Just in case you haven't seen this, I know lots of us use Micro-Controllers to interface our beloved 8 bits to the

outside world, this has just been released "Raspberry Pi Pico"

133Mhz ARM CPU lots of GPIO pins and of course very small, a nice cheap addition to make more fun :)

    I'm assuming it's 3.3v and not 5?
