Wii U will reportedly cease production this year
omegadot replied to toptenmaterial's topic in Modern Console Discussion
Yeah, that was a really odd decision to me. So much support behind something that had no reason to fail. Then things that are a little confusing with high risk of failure just get tossed out as-is. I ate up the free game happily, but Mario Kart never needed the help. -
The Official "Thrift finds" Thread
omegadot replied to Happy_Dude's topic in Classic Console Discussion
Was out driving and passed one of these for free on the side of the road. http://www.cnet.com/products/jvc-av-27f702/specs/ Played some SNES on it quickly before heading back out and it seems to work great. -
I'm about an hour into Other M (picked it up for cheap after this thread) and man are the environments generic and boring compared to the Prime games. I can deal with the dialog and some of the other stuff but I'm just bored by the rooms. I really hope it picks up a bit. As it stands this feels like a really good browser game.

I still flip through my EGMs from time to time because they are enjoyable to read. Sites like IGN and Gamepot are miserable to navigate and read. And now a lot of content is in video form which I find hard to pop between tasks to ingest. I tend to just avoid any video content other than a few like Zero Punctuation that actually make me laugh. I much prefer forums where I can just get basics from fellow gamers.

There are offline modes buy they aren't great. The heart of it is online only. -

I'd be very sad with no other way to play Splatoon. -
The Best Nintendo DS/3DS System
omegadot replied to Skippy B. Coyote's topic in Modern Console Discussion
Bought this for my son. It's pretty sweet and I'm a bit jealous. I did keep the box, though. It was pretty cool. -
Vintage, but it's probably not a ton more, honestly. The Wii U gets regular new additions, along with the 3DS and sometimes the Xbone (but rarely).
-
I doubt that's always true. It took me an SD card and about 15 minutes on Google. Xbox is still great at it though.

Tossing Homebrew on the Wii really makes it an issue of user experience. With the exception of spotty the expected N64 emulation support You can cheaply have so much of the Nintendo library in one place. For selection I give the Wii the node hands down. I just find the dongley controllers a distraction. I so wish I didn't.

This thread caused me to give MP3 another go. After googling around about the controls I noticed someone recommended just laying the mote / nunchuck on your lap. I normally held them out in front of me. With that minor change I'm really enjoying it. Forgetting the controls caused me to be stuck in a room for about 20 minutes but otherwise I had a real blast. I'll have to pick up Other M at the store soon to check it out. The used game shop I frequent had a copy for darn cheap the last few times I was in.

I said GCN because anytime I have to pick up a wiimote I'd prefer almost anything else. I get that the Wii is very technically superior in many ways and has a superset of the GCN library, but eh. I love popping in the little disc, hitting power and just using that wonderful controller with no other stuff in my way. Just added Rogue Leader 2 back to my collection and it's wonderful.

I got one for my daughter and I might prefer it to my 3ds XL for comfort.

Hexen: which console version is best?
omegadot replied to Cobra Kai's topic in Classic Console Discussion
Sadly I got terribly ill playing Hexen on the n64. It was food poisoning, not anything with motion sickness, but I forever associate it with that feeling and just can't play it again. I'd give it my vote, still. -
I didn't bother with Other M after the motion controls in Prime 3 just left me irritated. I equate the Wii Mote most closely to a mouse, which is just an unfair comparison when it comes to accuracy and response. I have tried to play Prime 3 repeatedly and always end up just going ehhhh. I'm sure soon after this post I'll try it again, though. However unfair, the critical commentary about the story and such really sealed it for me. Other M does appear to be pretty cheap at the local shops so I may pick it up just because it's part of a franchise I've historically adored.

DLC or not I'm in for Pikmin at least. Just digital here and I regret that.

Questions about Gamestop and cleaning games
omegadot replied to AAA177's topic in Classic Console Discussion
I clean mine before inserting to keep my connector clean inside the console. Pretty low effort and often there's some dirtiness that comes off. I've used both cardboard rubbing on the pins and alcohol but never lysol. Regarding their business model, it's pretty redundant as most anyone already has ebay etc habits. But I always figured they'd never trouble themselves with the mountains of sports games and other ultra commons as I'd guess warehousing at the very least introduces overhead your average ebayer might not experience when he tosses them into a cardboard box to dump for 20 bucks along with Sonic 2. Their static inventory might be somewhat planned. -
My Earthbound made it back to me. Save intact.

I moved back to Buffalo about 2 weeks ago and hosted an even with around 15 old my old friends. One brought a copy of Earthbound I had given with the rest of my collection years ago after moving out and getting rid of most of my things.

I want to like it but I can't find the deep end of the pool on this one.

My Wii U cable got ate my a rocking chair last night. I'm looking at some of the USB cables as my couch can charge that. Third Party power stuff makes me nervous, though. Anyone used any third party charge cables?

This is how I feel. I really like my Vita but I'd hesitate to recommend it. Holding it hasn't been an issue for me but the speaker placement stands out as odd to me. My thumbs tend to cover them when I hold it comfortably. Regarding value, those cards are only worth it if you get a bunch of fairly cheap games in my opinion. What another odd decision. All that said, I really enjoy playing me some JRPGs on it and the battery life (as it my other Sony devices) is great. Sony has a battery company so I think they make all the batteries in these things and I've always been impressed.

GAME Collecting Pet Peeves - So Annoying!
omegadot replied to Metal Jesus's topic in Classic Console Discussion
Blockbuster railroad track sticker on CDs and the awful giant sticker they tossed on N64 carts. Man I hate those. I do appreciate a mint game / console but I'm not too worried about a few things on the cart. Those old blockbuster stickers were thrown right over the art and were huge. In the case of the CD I'm pretty sure they make it less stable in there and can do actual damage. Some of the game shops in my area just refused to take them citing this issue. -
What a miserable tone in that video.

Super Smash Bros...still fresh and innovative or old hat?
omegadot replied to Unbeliever's topic in Modern Console Discussion
It seems to me that with competitive gaming so accepted now there's a much larger group of people playing that spend significant amounts of time pouring over stats and combinations in this type of game. I noticed it in the MOBAs as well when I wanted to get more into them because I liked the gameplay. I watched some videos for a while on DOTA 2, I think, and I found it interesting and fun but ultimately didn't have near the time I was willing to invest to feel successful. The 'numbers' approach isn't new by any means, but I've noticed it a heck of a lot more. That in itself seems to have impact the SSB DLC and balancing and also creates a sort of metagame on the internet that I think is more widespread now. When I look at it and go 'frenetic gameplay, lots of characters cherry picked from games, and an overture of levels from different franchises' maybe I'm selling it short. There is the other part that's been cultivated and supported through communication and maybe it's something to add into the mix.
