  1. I never ran into the gen counting much before coming here so I'm not sure how they all number down and just push 'I believe' reading the above posts. I also wasn't really a functioning human being before the NES stormed the US. 1. N64/PlayStation/Saturn N64 games me loads of multiplayer fun and PlayStation just had so many great RPGs. I also didn't have a job yet, so that was even better. 2. SNES/Genesis/??? ->JRPGs. mmmm. 3. Dreamcast//GCN/PS2/Xbox -> I really enjoyed the online gaming creep into the console space. As of this gen 3D games look good enough to me. 4. NES/SMS/??? -> I find it's aged really well. I only really played the Mario games when it was new, though. 5. Current -> In a good place in life to enjoy it, although so far I don't like the XBone much I have some faith. 6. 360/PS3 -> way too much going on in life to sink into last gen very well. I recognize it's quality but I never engaged it much.
  2. Reminds me how many PSPs we would get in forensics with porn and other crap on them. At first it was funny to get one in. Eventually it wore thin.
  3. I still find it slow and have the same input issues. I'm about to boot it off the entertainment center.
  4. My friend's grandmother has a 54" 4:3 TV years ago after her eyes started to really go. We would hook up our PSX and SNES to it for fun. It was actually pretty impressive at the time. Compared to my daily driver of a 48" widescreen TV it's still impressive now that I think about it.
  5. I agree, they usually don't so much overshadow as much as expand. I have trouble considering Metroid Prime in the same genre as the previous installments. It's a case were the perspective really changed the focus to exploration and learning vice lonely action with some exploration. I really love both, erm, generations of Metroid, though. In fact I picked up a new GCN controller in part to play Prime again. Now Sonic games...those didn't translate well. Fast-pace platformers suffered quite a bit it seems like.
  6. Someone just needs to figure out how to integrate some buttons on a phone in a sleek manner. I know it's been tried a few times at least but not enough to stop the 3DS from a pretty successful run. If Nintendo partnered to put out a decent handset with physical controls that paired somehow with a home console I'd be sold. I feel like at this point Nintendo would seem most likely but I'm not sure it's likely any of them will as part of the construct that Sega, Atari, etc went. The industry itself may leave them behind, though. The 'esports' growth may end up having a pretty interesting impact as well.
  7. I think when executed well most genres are better for having 3D games. Certainly FPS and action / adventure games the most in my mind. I prefer 2D JRPGs myself, but there are some nice immersive games in 3D. Platformers seem to be the hardest to get right and other than more intricate combat and puzzles I'm not sure they are 'better' in 3 dimensions.
  8. I do recall the 'b' button being an often issue on the GCN controller. The sticks on the N64 also, of course.
  9. All the acronyms in those posts along with terrible grammar always throws me off.
  10. Hmm, I think a light gun game on master system at my grandfather's. The first I really recall playing with interest is a 2d Duke Nukem on PC.
  11. Considering many of us bought these things used it seems like something not out of the ordinary. I can't imagine getting upset about a simple proposition.
  12. I think eventually I'll consider anything classic that doesn't need a network cable or log in it to play my games...
  13. 360. Eventually I just dumped it. I'll never bother to pick up another one again. Other than that I've had great luck.
  14. Yeah, I should spend more time on MK and SF2. I actually beat them both on SNES about...20 years ago or something. So at this point I've essentially not played them. I totally didn't realize Turbo actually meant something. Those series seem to have so many letters, numbers, and symbols that I ignored it, hah. My arcade sticks also aren't super precise so anything very technical can get very frustrating. The VERY few moves I do remember, basically quareter circle + anything, I have trouble hitting. It's more likely a mix of kinda loose sticks and my just being terrible. At some point in the next few months I'll upgrade the sticks I think. Presuming I don't need to just upgrade me. The Megaman game looks pretty nifty. I will definitely check that out. I appreciate all the feed back, gives me a bit to chew on.
  15. I guess that depends on your system / games of choice. I know a few 16-bit era RPGs can knock the equation in favor of the flashcart real darn quick. Like I could buy Earthbound and Chrono Trigger carts or I could get a flash cart, a babysitter, a bottle of booze and a pizza.
  16. I'm messing with my emulation station / MAME setup this weekend and I'm wondering about any simple fighters I can put on it. I have Street Fighter 2 and Mortal Kombat...something... on it right now and I was wondering if there's a more casual (easier?) fighter I can run in MAME. I'm not very good at fighting games and I tend to fall more towards Power Stone or Super Smash Bros button spamming. I've never been able to get Power Stone to run well on the thing unfortunately.
  17. The 360 controller works quite well across the board. I used a knockoff wireless adapter for it and other than having to force the driver install it worked well for not a lot of money. I have an adapter for N64 and a few SNES style USB paddles that are quite capable. They all mostly detect easily in Windows or Xubuntu (the boxes I use for most emulation are Xubuntu)
  18. I think at this point I have current gen, last gen, a farm team gen and then anything good moving back is classic to me. Anything else is old. I don't use a dictionary for any of this.
  19. Diablo 3 on PS3. Never cared for clicky RPGs but I loved it on PS3.
  20. Diablo 3 on PS3. Never cared for clicky RPGs but I loved it on PS3.
  21. My MAME machine has other emulators and controllers. I use a front end and ran an external power button. More setup for sure but it's done when done. I think most have a quit button combo but I have a keyboard hooked up if needed. It rarely is. Something like an ouya is probably more convenient but I find the flexibility and ease of backing up nice.
  22. Save states or long lasting standby modes in 3DS / PS Vita save me. JRPGs area easily my favorite genre and man are they not adult life with kids friendly. I miss the tension of the savepoint a little but eh, can't play any other way.
  23. There probably aren't too many RPGs that are entirely grind free. Off the top of my head I can't really think of any, just some with a lot less. I suppose I don't much notice it unless it's really bad, which think I found many of the early Dragon Warrior and FF games to be pretty grindy / random battly. EDIT: To not seems crazy, the health issues in those games are usually solved by grinding. Once you have enough cash and HP to walk around like an unflappable death cannon it becomes less of an issue.
  24. Secret of Mana and Secret of Evermore I think are pretty approachable SNES RPGs. My memories of SoE are cloudy but I did play SoM more recently in the last few years and it was pretty straight forward and is an action RPG so which translates well if you aren't into the line of fighters turn based style (which I am also into).
  25. The PS3 / Vita Chrono Trigger is just an emulated PSX port and suffers from really bad load times when loading menus, areas, and going into and out of battle. I'd guess the PSP suffers the same issue but I don't have one. I like the Vita so much that I've recently put up with it but I'd rather have it on the DS so I may go that route at some point. I've played the Anthologies when they were new on the PSX and I don't recall anything other than the FMV standing out but it's been a very long time, obviously.
