  1. So I ended up going with the Borderlands 2 Vita bundle from Amazon as it was on sale and shipping was fast. Right now it's out for delivery. We are going back home for a few days off, first time for me in 2 years or so and I really wanted a machine to sit and JRPG on. Trolling around ebay for a good lot with games in the PSP line would leave me sans portable for the trip and I figured eh, why not jump into the more or less current iteration. I'm thinking a 2/3000 for emulation in a few months.
  2. Or is Nintendo welcome Sega to the next level in this construct? It's been a very long time but I think Austin is correct.
  3. It has a reasonable demo of I think 3 levels.
  4. That's mostly true, but my experience with media between at least the PS3 and the Xbox One is that other than the TV stuff i don't really have a use for, I vastly prefer the PS3's media streaming support now that it has a well functioning Spotify and Plex client. Based on that I might have gone with a PS4 were I buying now. Both have some very solid exclusives but not enough to pull me either way. In my case it was mostly up to the controller I think.
  5. I've been playing the GCN OoT from the beginning a bit lately and to my eyes the visual have not aged well. Mario 64 still looks engaging and colorful. All the mute colors in OoT don't age well. I imagine the up-scaling involved only does so much.
  6. There were at least some Windows 8.1 based machines announced, not just the SteamOS Linux-variant. I'm not sure what came to market as pre-build machines aren't something I have a need for. http://arstechnica.com/gaming/2014/06/alienware-steam-machine-now-a-windows-pc-for-the-living-room/
  7. This thread just makes me curious about where people put these things.
  8. Well, it depends on what the machine runs. I used an app to add emulators / ROMs to my Steam Big Picture menu on my Windows machine and it worked great. http://scottrice.github.io/Ice/
  9. Hmm.... Game Boy (grey brick) GBA SP 3DS XL Virtual Boy NES SNES 101 N64 GCN Wii Wii U Genesis 2 Dreamcast PS2 PS3 EDIT: Oh yeah, Xbox One... Positively dinky compared to many of theses.
  10. I can't believe I never looked into this before. The lineup looks great. Sadly it feels like it's the last in a line from Sony. I hope that is not true. I love portable gaming.
  11. While neat I can't imagine spending any real money on something like this. It's a great novelty but I don't see much of a use for it. I hope it ends up in a museum setting.
  12. I always found the 360 paddle to be a great PC controller. It's near universal adoption for Steam games didn't bother me for that reason.
  13. I like the idea of some darker content not being on the TV. I do have a PS3 in our bedroom and after reading it seems like those downloads will be available on the handhelds with various restrictions regarding buttons and transferring. Now I'm eyeing up the Vita. Although the cost of the PSP 2000 is attractive. Plenty of lots with some games for like 50-60 bucks around.
  14. Wow, that's very helpful, thank you. Looks like the 2000 model might be where I jump in.
  15. So I'm looking hard at the PSP line of handhelds but whenever I browse around ebay or what not I see a lot of model numbers. I know there's a PSP line and a Vita line but then there seems to be a lot of revisions. It seems like these get some JRPG love and other interesting titles that I'd like to get into. Are there models to avoid? Are the revisions that big of a deal? I only ever owned a Game Gear then the Gameboy/DS line and never paid any attention to Sony's offerings. The homebrew stuff is neat but I'm looking more at commercial releases. I have loads of options for homebrew / emulation as it is. I'm sure wikipedia offers answers but I usually trust the opinions here to be accurate and a lot shorter.
  16. I got this last night for the Xbox One so we'd have something co-op to play. My wife loves puzzle games so it was a natural pick. I think it's a blast so far. Silly sense of humor, entertaining visuals, simple but challenging (to me at least) puzzles. Basically you are two little aliens (in co-op one player controls one alient) connected by a tube and in a very mature turn one of you farts as a result of drinking some sort of soda, filling up one of the tethered space suits with gas. You transfer the gas back and forth between to traverse the levels by bouncing on the gassy one or being pulled by him/her (they are aliens, I dunno). Simple but effective.
  17. I have an N64 and Mario 64 cart not 15 feet from my Wii U/VC Mario 64 and I take the Wii U one every time. I have a little trouble with triple jump on the gamepad / pro controller but the clear visuals alone are worth it.
  18. I find my Xbox One to be a mostly irritating system with a delightful controller and a number of great games with quite the complement of free to low cost options. Irritations: -Around 2/3 of the time netflix doesn't recognize my controller until I power cycle the controller. -Plex around 1/4 of the time will not allow me to scroll through my library. It will at first repeat nearby titles if as sorted alphabetically and then starts to repeat random titles. -For a while apps would 'crash' to 'desktop' every few launches with no feedback at all. -Relatively low storage space with the push to digital being in pretty full swing. Disks end up just being an annoyance since the installation takes considerable time and then I need to put it in each time anyway. I guess I was naive about that one. -Pandora is a mess for us. Most of the time it doesn't load my stations. Granted I have I think 40+ stations, I'm not sure if that is abnormal or not but I feel like it's not at this point in the timeline. As a media box I tend to boot my Wii U as I just know Netflix / Amazon Prime will work. For plex I have a few devices but the One does have the best fidelity, I can't fault it there. We have a PS4 at work that sees quite a lot of play in the break room and I'd be lying if I saw a compelling difference on the screen. I prefer the One's controller and it has a few standout franchises for me. I don't have the camera doo hickey and I don't use the streaming / capturing stuff at all but I'm told quite often it works great. Snapping is neat too. Let's me have pandora (the one station that will be one) while I play. We've also put netflix on for the kids while we play a few times. That's snazzy. As for these sorts of threads, I think they are fun to see over time. Especially with systems changing significantly over the life span.
  19. Re: digital distribution, I definitely do not miss patching. Especially in multiplayer settings. I did sort or enjoy hosting our own little repo website to keep us at baseline but eh, don't want to worry about it anymore.
  20. I think my 'If you could have one' game would be Pac-Man. I Do love Galaga 88 and Frogger, and Raiden as well, though. I after those the list just goes on and on as far as what I like playing on my MAME.
  21. I picked up Pokemon Sapphire recently off ebay. I was just trolling and thought 'hey, I'd pay 10.50 for you.' so I just bid and moved on. Turns out I won it. While I enjoyed Yellow when I was in high school and X more recently a lot I never played any in between so I'm pretty happy. I never cared for the cartoons at all. I'm about an hour in and really enjoying myself. I love the relaxed nature of it. Has anyone bought any of the translated Mother carts? I have a the fan translation patch for 3 as well as the US dump for Earthbound on my Wii but I'd love both portable. Prices seem reasonable for the lots of 1&2 on one cart and 3 on another as I really adore Earthbound and Mother 3.
  22. I remember opening up my cousin's NES (he had bought it used years later) and finding food in it. That was a special moment.
  23. Neat, the animations is excellent. Highlight how much I dislike the direction Unreal (after 2k4 it felt like shiny fluffy grey / brown to me) went in as well as brownochromatic environments.
  24. Regarding contact cleaning I got the tip from another AAer about using a piece of cardboard on the contacts. I just rub a piece of regular brown cardboard across the pins and watch the cardboard turn disgusting. Best approach I've used yet.
