  1. The PSX loading screen is legendary as far as that simple sort of enjoyment goes. The sound of the drive actually played into it well too.
  2. I never browsed it until this thread. I was surprised at the prices so I went back to ebay.
  3. Someone will have to explain to me why I should want things because they cost more.
  4. I have 2 white/grey? Dreamcasts. I'd like to get a Sports Edition or another color but I just haven't wanted to spend the money on yet another Dreamcast. As far as games, I liked a lot of the common ports like Tony Hawk, Rush 2049 etc. Jet Grind Radio and Power Stone 2 are among my favorites, though. Chu Chu Rocket is also a blast. I have loads of good feelings thinking back about the online gaming with this thing. PSO, Alien Front and Quake 3 were a joy. It remains one of my favorite consoles to this day.
  5. I don't know why respect or difficulty in attainment would have anything to do with a bunch of artifacts being a collection other than how you feel about it. Frankly I have trouble even finding another word for it but I'm also used to using 'collections' in programming so my use of the word is pretty general. Sure, digital collections are different from physical because they are different things but that doesn't ban one from the collection party. From my perspective, I don't have any respect or disrespect for someone car collection because I don't care about it at all. To me a car is meant to get me places and having numerous specific cars in a collection would be useless. My feelings don't change anything about the status of someone's stuff though. Nears as I can tell it centers around: 'I don't like it.'
  6. I loved 3D world as did everyone else I know with it.
  7. So I can identify with the trigger dislike. I remember when they started cutting over and making it default. I was just too used to rolling my thumb around for it to feel natural. Feathering the throttle was also something I was used to doing. It's minor but these small movements get really ingrained. At this point it's been a while since that became a common configuration though. I've also never been that good at racers, just had lots of friends that loved cars and by extension i had to be involved somehow.
  8. This seems like a fun bump. Sometime during college I dumped off my collection for reasons I didn't really understand then. 8 or 9 years later I found myself on the tail of of an enlistment a few states away from where I grew up and just in a much happier place. Not a ton of anxiety anymore and I had the money and time to game again. I decided to go back and visit a lot of games from various periods of my life that I missed due to varying levels of depression and anxiety just ruining my attention to anything, something I didn't really realize was even happening until I was in a new place in life. I picked up a few things at thrifts to start up and googled around for a community since I didn't have too many friends around to talk to on account of having to move around and the general encompassing nature of my work. I'd like to get into some sort of game programming for a new challenge as I enjoy working as a programmer and I feel like this place will probably be a great resource. I think it would be quite a rush to code something up and put it on a cart to play it on my TV. No real clue where to start though. I imagine the forums here will help.
  9. I wasn't aware that the power supply on the xbox one even had a fan. I was hesitant to get one after having long running issues with the 360's head and noise but I was impressed with that aspect. At this point I figured most of those classics would have some middleware go button that'd run on nearly any Windows OS through the engineering black arts of Redmond but that doesn't' seem to be so.
  10. So I tried this out for the first time today. For the uninitiated you tap an Amiibo and unlock a random game to play in 7 3 minute chunks. That Amiibo will then started 1 of 7 scenes for that game whenever they are tapped within the Amiibo Tap client thing. Like a more fleshed out version of what Super Smash Bros does with the classic demos. It's certainly no killer application but I did have a lot of fun with my son tapping my 5 different Amiibos to see what they brought. He was rather confused when Mario unlocked Kirby, but eh. I kinda like the 3 minute chunks. I know it's to to sell the Virtual Console games but I think it's fun to be dropped into the game with no need to go through pesky menus then see how far I can get in 3 minutes. I think it's a fun, if confusingly implemented extra. Anyone else used it?
  11. I remembered a Belkin USB<->Ethernet adapter I had from my raspberry pi a while back and popped that on. Wii U saw it just fine and it seems to have resolved my issues.
  12. Meh, went to play the new content and couldn't keep a connection to the interwebs with my Wii U. In this case it may be my aging Verizon gear. Was pretty darn disappointing too. My son was all happy to watch my play a sweet game.
  13. I wow, I loved this game on my Performa. I have nothing to contribute beyond that.
  14. I played again two nights ago and got dropped from the two games we were going to win. It was frustrating...
  15. http://arstechnica.com/gaming/2015/06/report-nintendos-next-console-will-have-android-based-os/ """ Update (June 2, 2015): In a statement provided to the Wall Street Journal, an unnamed Nintendo spokesperson said "There is no truth to the report saying that we are planning to adopt Android for NX." That's a pretty strong denial for a company whose usual stance is simply not to comment on rumors or speculation." """
  16. NFS is fun for a romp. I mostly just get a kick out of ripping around the road to smash into people.
  17. Ugh. Every little Android box I've had (Roku, Amazon Fire, other crap) has had the most mixed bag of user experience and stability. I freakin' love my Nintendo consoles but that has me going eek.
  18. archive.org has a ton of archives up. https://archive.org/details/tosec
  19. Just put some more time in online and man am I having fun. Since the combat is over a shared resource that is taken back rapidly there is a lot of tension right up to the end. Other similar games often have me running around or stalking something to go after but in Splatoon it's both all around you an easily accessible since you can jump to your teammates. The lack of more local multiplayer and a reliance on DLC style releases that will be lost to time if not sold in a GotY Edition sort of manner is a real shame. The mini game during loading is sorta odd but I get into games so quickly I've hardly touched it.
  20. I opened it up last night to play. It worked when inserted with no trouble. Buying discs for the Wii U remains enjoyable. I intended to play with my wife but ended up having to do the intro thing right away and then I ran into an online match since I didn't know what to expect when entering that area of the game's hub city. The match was quick and fun, just how I like it. The map was great. We got trounced (probably my fault) but I had fun. With a game that's basically an arena shooter I prefer maps that are designed that way. I'm less interested in maps that try very hard to be an alien installation or what not in an arena setting. I'm also fine with a small amount of tight maps. With shooters I typically only end up playing a small subset anyhow since I'm really there to play against other people using the games mechanics vice see different sights. I could see that not being everyone's cup of tea. We did finally play 2 1 v 1 matches but since I have about a billion more hours of FPS / TPS time and she wasn't familiar with the controls it ended up not being that much fun. She found the addition of the swimming mechanic to an already slightly alien concept a bit hard to drop into so we switched to Mario Kart. I offered to have her go through the tutorial but we wanted to just get to some kids free game time. I was disappointed to see nothing but the 1 v 1 for local multiplayer, myself. It's the only part of the game that felt very thin. I did check the in-game manual and it confirmed that as our only option. The game definitely feels like someone wanted to play it so they made it. I find it very endearing and a heck of a lot of fun. I would just love to see more local multiplayer content or it won't see as much play as it deserves here. Anyone else pick it up? I didn't and likely won't do anything with the Amiibo stuff anytime soon.
  21. Ah, from the Wiki citation: PS-X (PlayStation Experimental) was an internal code name for the PlayStation during development.[1] The popular use of the "PSX" abbreviation outside Sony became a source of confusion when Sony Of Japan ignored Sony of America's decision and introduced its PSX digital video recorder in 2003.
  22. I seem to remember calling the Playstation PSX when it was new. I never put any real effort into finding out why it was shortened the way it was, though. It certainly wasn't the PS1. the PSOne came out alongside the PS2, so the name actually made sense to differentiate at that point.
  23. One of the areas I prefer to emulate is classic JRPGs. Without save states I effectively can't play them. It's often I can only carve out a little bit of time to play and hoping that a save point comes up just leads to frustration. Incidentally these are also the games I love the most and want to collect, so. Meh.
  24. Well, to be fair, a 1/4 of the size of the full size PS2. There was also a slim of that console. The slim PS2 is one of the most common systems I see at thrifts now, I think. My quick googling tells me that compatibility is not identical across version of the same 'body' revision.
