Speaking of PSX, anyone ever consider stocking up? Right now they are dirt common and repairs are cheap, I got around 30 working PSX/PSOne stored for when they become scare and over $50 a pop on eBay.
Eh, with the PS3 and PS2 playing PSX games I couldn't see myself actually caring that much to own the PSX. I admit I have a fond memory of the disc load sound + intro sound but since Sony has had basically the same controller since the PSX and the following consoles play the discs I'm not sure how sought after it would ever be.

I go to the one right by work on lunch a few times a week. Picked up a Dreamcast the other day for not a great price, but it does work great. I needed a new one as mine was having issues reading discs and I'm too lazy to replace the battery on an already iffy console. But for older stuff? I did see some 2600 carts all at double ebay prices so that wasn't the day I joined the cool kids.

As far as value goes, the fact that when I buy a physical game on the Wii U it works and I can play it as-is on a system that has been entirely stable since we bought it for Xmas right after launch is important to me. I like the reward programs on the Xbox One because I've so far paid full price for exactly one game. What I dislike is that system has been irritating and I feel like I'm renting the games. I often bounce around and take a long time to beat games (like years sometimes) so losing service and hassles of installation sometimes just prevent me from gaming at this point. I think it's fine at 300 USD but since Nintendo is missing some key genres for a lot of people it would probably need a drop to really catch on as the 'it's for my kid's' system.
I'd love to see more games for the 'mature' (wants to kill stuff) crowd since offscreen play would just be a delight. I love this for CoD when I'm sort of jonesing to play a shooter and the kiddies are up.
Removing the need for the gamepad to use the store and other features went a long way to winning my heart back after some initial frustration over the interface / battery life on the pad.

I'm only partway through each of the campaigns but post a billion patches I haven't noticed anything going wrong bug wise. The Xbox One itself I still find to be a mess, but most of the games I have, MCC included, work pretty well. Assuming control input works and the game launches.

I wish I'd known about the cardboard method of cleaning years ago. I got a Genesis 2 recently and it worked alright but it was a little finicky about being touched and I had to seat games a few times. I just spent some time with a piece of cardboard and the stack of carts I had and bam, it's solid now. Got lots of gray stuff off. I even wiggled the system a bit to see while playing Sonic and no troubles..

I didn't get to play, mostly because my HD is about full, but I did read about the rollers in a few places. There are plenty of examples in the shooter world of a class / weapon combo being clearly over powered but still being defeated by skilled players. Rocket launchers and sniper rifles off the top of my head have been at issue since at least the Quake 2 days that I've personally experienced. I actually like when things aren't all even, it makes it more interesting over a longer period of time.
I'm still pretty jazzed about this release. Seems like it's been pretty well accepted as a good game already.

Hm, I had great luck just removing the thing and pushing the pins back out. The NES that currently sits on my shelf has some third party 72 pin adaptor (from the store) that seems to be good still after a year of admittedly light use.

I don't play it the most, but my Dreamcast is my favorite.
It's starting to become pretty cliche to dote on the Dreamcast, I think, but it was the first new console I was able to buy for myself. It was primarily where I was introduced to online gaming through Quake 3, PSO, and Alien Front: Online. It gave me my first tastes of homebrew. I loved the arcade games on it, the fact that the modem was packed in and it had 4 ports for great Power Stone matches. I still think the look of it all is pretty cool and was a demarcation point between consoles looking fun and looking like ultra modern VCRs. I really just enjoyed everything about it's launch, marketing and actually owning the thing. I had one of the best Christmases ever with it and my cousin. He had Quake 3, which I'd only ever played on PC a few times at a friends house, and we dug in and did pretty much nothing else.

Pretty neat. I've read a few VG history books, mostly on the late 80s through mid to late 90s but I was unaware of his books. I liked the video quite a lot.

There they do state that there at least some changes, if that is what you are referring to. Sounds like it's the ROMs with a hacked menu and some other fixes so I'd guess same performance?

Aaaand this post kicked off a yearning that ended with...

Ah yes, the overuse of the word rape. I remember being maybe 14 and a super cool internet user. I used the word rape once around my mother talking about a game. I actually didn't curse around my parents, I think it was some stupid test the waters moment. I'm glad she didn't have anything sharp on her. I think I'd have been in 15 pieces buried around the yard. From then on I knew the line, it was well behind me and I ran back to it with a quickness. Naturally a number of years later I look at that moment (and many others while growing up) with a disappointed sigh at myself.
Offensive references aside, I think most of the time all I want out of people that I'm not close friends with is to fulfill some objective. Why am I only seeing one way traffic on this device, my car is doing this when I accelerate, etc. If like 40% of what you are saying back to me is just extra curse words or hard to navigate slang I'm just going to go elsewhere. I don't know you, I only know what you are saying to me right now. If a lot of the content is useless to me that doesn't breed confidence in the rest of your content.

Woohoo! The somehow managed to recover everything that was taken. Lucky break! Looks like they'll be in lockdown for awhile. My whole point of this is we all need to do whatever it takes to protect our collection. I'm gonna be moving soon anyway. Tired of drug dealing going on down the street and speeding vehicles. I have a child that cant even play outside because of this.
Should do a pictographic story of the recovery.

FFXI still supports the PS2??? Holy crap!

I'd put the recent Rayman game (also free on Gold) more in that category of "truly playable cartoon," but Child of Light is definitely a nice looking game. It's games like those that absolutely counteract the silly argument that all of today's games look the same. The fact that the technology part is fairly stable and relatively high level these days allows for a wide variety of art styles to be realized, be it pixel art, photo realistic, abstract, etc.
Totally agree. I also really loved Ni No Kuni on PS3 for the art style. I think we've gotten back a style that was lost somewhere in rush to 3D. Brownochromatic seemed the only option for a long time.

Currently, Squish Game & Watch.

I played 2 or 3 rounds on the campaign list and was really impressed. I never feel like I'm aiming with the thumbsticks in Halo or BF4. Just nudging the gun and hoping. I actually felt like I had some say in my bullets.
Just like on PC I'm still thrilled that you can actually survive on foot. Unlike many of the BF games over the years.

Concern that people won't think I'm the wonderful and amazing parent a clearly am? Nah. Concerned when my kid acts like a shit head to someone? Yes.
A little more on topic, the gaming scenes in general have a pretty awkward relationship with profanity. It's just ... blegh so much of the time. There's a rhythm to speech that is not respected when someone just says fuck or whatever over and over. If my son is going to learn curse words, I'd rather he not learn them from someone screeching out every swear word he knows. AVGN I don't mind because there's often an interesting progression to the videos. I could do without the awkward swearing character, but eh, I like the other aspects of it enough to deal. For the tubers that don't even offer that and still have all the swearing? Stay far far away.

when in doubt, post some ridiculous hyperbole!
I was talking about occasional nudity in movies or TV, not flashing people.
Your kids aren't going to be ruined if they hear an f-bomb.
Really depends on the situation. I don't care much about my son hearing cursing or seeing a boob now and then (up until a year and a half ago he ate from them) but sometimes I want to avoid it because he gets in moods where anything that goes in comes out. Like the first Turtles movie, for example. Does the word damn or freak hurt him? Nope, and he will hear them a lot in his life. But! he's going to run around at the play center saying that to other kids and they aren't smart enough to deal with context. He thinks he's being raph, but that's not going to come through his rendition. I love that movie and I do watch it with him, but sometimes you want to keep it clear too.

Sweet deal, I always loved the big ol' Genesis paddle. Right now I lack one so I just play emulated. I was playing Road Rash 2 last night. Still have a soft spot for those games.

Just got it in the mail and installed. Wasn't a bad experience compared to Halo. I ran through the tutorial briefly as my kids are running around and I'm not big on shooting squishies around them. I was impressed at the controls immediately.

Wife and I loved to play the game. Reminded me a bit of Monday Night Combat, so I took to it pretty easily. There are a few of those DotA style shooters around and I usually enjoy them. My issue is that we had a lot of problems with saves not really loading everything we'd unlocked / bought with the in game currency. We also had hell getting a game some nights. The mandatory online connection to play offline is absurd. It was like they made this rather tight game and then just thought, eh, good enough. That last mile would have clinched it as a great game for me.
I played it as part of the EA Access thing. I wouldn't buy it outright after experiencing the issues we did. Which is sad, it's got some great stuff in it.

Is Grandia II any good? That's on my list to play (DC version).
The trick to 8 is to draw 99 of each spell early on (takes a bit, but it's actually not that bad) then auto junction everything. Suddenly your characters are super bad ass and you'll have no trouble with the rest of the game. If you go around and get the unique cards from the card game you can distill those into some super nice items.
So I haven't played it in like 8+ years. I got it when it launched, LOVED it, then I haven't played it again since. The reason for that is I seem to remember the boss battles taking a very long time and I'm not sure how far I could get. I may have sucked, though. I was debating making a go at it again but I'm in a bad habit lately of starting up JRPGs.
oh my, I just googled it's launch date. It HAS been a while.

While paying full price for a game that may or may not have any support in a year doesn't usually work out for me, I have no issue with MP only. I just have trouble getting enough time in these days where 50 bones is worth getting trounced by kids online an hour a week or so until servers clear out or get shut down. I loved Quake III. Played lots of the CS series, had hundreds of hours of fun in Wolfenstein: Enemy-Territory. That was all mostly in LAN play, which doesn't work out as well as an adult with kids in an apartment :-/. Looking forward to checking this one out on the XBone. Sounds like it's handled well. I know it reviewed quite well but I just didn't want to bite at full price.

So Pacman turned 35 today...
