  1. I once did a timing test using an nes emulator on crt television (xbox classic) vs. a real nintendo on a crt television, with the game Super Mario Brothers.

I started both at the exact same time.

The music and everything was perfectly synched for about...10-20 seconds. Then the emulator started running behind. By the end of the time limit, the emulator was slower by about 1 whole second (I'm just estimating here-as I can't recall exactly), but it was significant.

I didn't move mario at all, he just stood in one place on both.

Interesting, I've never seen that done. I have noticed that the tempo in some of my n64 emulation seems off but I never sought to quantify it that way.

  2. I fell off the wagon around the same place. I played Grandia 2 before FFX, so the fact that there were random battles was just something that really irked me at the time. I've had thoughts of doing the same run through, although I'm still on disc one in FFVIII after like 4 months so we'll see on that one. I'm actually enjoying it more this time. The draw system after the materia system was just jarring for me and some of the repetitive areas were too frustrating.

  3. I know the Chrono Trigger in the store for PS3 is terrible. I have it and I'll never launch it again. The lag before menu was obscene and loading between areas was terrible. And like, there are a few uses of the menu in a JRPG. I was incredibly disappointed. Not sure how the FF games that had the same treatment fair. I'm also not sure how the PSX disc version fairs on a PS3, but I'd be hesitant to get the Playstation Store version on a PS3.

  4. I did it. I'll use it for a few months and then drop it. I find it very convenient and while I enjoy BF4 I don't play it enough to care that I lack the new maps or whatever. I would never buy a Madden but for 4 bucks a month I'll mess around with it a bit. For a casual consumer of their games it's a good deal for EA and me.

The vault does not really see a lot of updates but they claim games won't be pulled out of it. I think it's worth it if you are pretty casual about the titles they offer.

  5. I've always wobbled back and forth but consistently keep up to speed with both except for the latest console generation. Everyone wants to worry about problems or warranty issues with PCs but after going through 4 Xbox 360s, you just kinda luck out or you don't. There are fruits to both sides of the universe and if you're really a gamer, you'll love both. If I were to buy a console, it would be a PS4 but I'm not sure if or when I'll do that. My PC rig is where its at these days and running the absolute latest hardware is a dream compared to what it used to be like just to keep up with PSX-like graphics back in the late 90s. Then again, those cards were a few hundred bucks... now we're talking like $600 for the video card alone haha... even then, still cheaper than a 3DO, am I right? ;-)

3440 x 1440 resolution is beautiful to play in I should add... no console can do that.

By measurement of how many current games I can play reasonably well for the money I think stuff is a lot cheaper now that it used to be. There seems to be a much larger variety on the high end, but I'd say the mid range and lower end hardware is much more capable than it used to be. But yeah if you are shooting for the high end it's just so much more expensive than a 350USD box I plug into my TV and go.

  6. I don't remember what it was called but 15 or so years ago my buddy downloaded some 1000 game archive off some newsgroup. We stayed up all night playing them. Some were pretty fun sports games, but one was a game where you just tried to have anal sex with the other character. Sort of like a really erotic flag football. I'm not willing to google to find that since I'm currently watching paw patrol with my son.

I guess that's not really that weird in the face of like Katamari Damacy. Sex is actually a thing, after all.

I picked up one of these to stick my ageing transformer in once I realized I didn't really want one of the JXD etc type handhelds when I already had so many damn Android devices floating around. I wasn't really sure how it'd turn out but so far it's pretty darn handy. So far I'm played (and enjoyed!) Super Mario RPG, Super Metroid, Earthbound, Goldeneye and Snowboard Kids.

The construction seems pretty sturdy, it grips the tablet itself quite well. I was nervous how it would be to stick a 10" tablet in and it works well. The angle is a little off, it would be nice if it was angled back a bit further, but it's not really uncomfortable. I'm guessing with a smaller device it would matter less. So far I've just kept it in landscape mode and it's snug. The hook that holds it up on bottom is off to the left a bit so my charging port is left uncovered.

The buttons respond well enough and while they aren't state of the art they are better than other 3rd party types I've used.

The mapping is a bit odd. There are 3 modes it can be put in, the iCade, a keyboard, and a gamepad. So far I think keyboard detected the best in the n64 emulation. iCade works well in snes but the mapping is off by default. It's selectable with easy key presses so it's not too bad to change on the fly. I run one of the latest CM builds and the bluetooth paired without a hassle.

Charging is via the same USB standard as all my phones use, it's one of the smaller standards, I forget which one. No cable included but no tears about that from me.

It claims a 20 hour battery life, but in any case it's way more than my tablet itself will play games.

I'm sure the manufacturing is about as consistent as any of these other devices but mines seems just fine. Really enjoying my new mobile emulation. Little girl can't grab all my cables...grumble grumble....

  8. I grew up on console games but then throughout high school and some college I got into a lot of competitive LAN play for CS and Quake 3 (before Steam torpedoed that community in my area) so I ended up mostly gaming there for years and being general terrible at RTSes and other strategy games between FPS binges and EQ time sinks.

Now that I've got kids I tend to play on consoles as it fits my life well. I can grab my girls and relax with a controller or hand it off to my son and let him run around while I go make dinner or whatever. Arguments about interfaces, peripherals, resomolutions, backwards compatibility, etc I tend to grant to PCs but consoles provide me fun that fits my life. I also spend all day at work staring at terminals so it's nice to not relax with a keyboard and monitor these days.

  9. They bought out so many stores that used to sell classics around me growing up, I wonder if they sat on any of the inventory.

You wouldn't. Casuals that randomly find an old console with some games in their attic that they have long forgotten about, however, will.

    NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  10. I've picked up the recent Nintendo games at our local one here. I literally walk in, ask for the game, the girl (same one every time) behind the counter goes yep and hands it to me. I pay and I'm out in under 3 minutes. Most I've been in years. The one's back in Virginia Beach were very confusing to walk in to and I could never get help. Eventually I found the other smaller shops and just went there.

  11. Well, so far it hasn't had a lot of use apart from a couple of late night sessions with AC Black Flag. We used to use the 360 as a media player but it wouldn't play mkv files, which was a pain. Found out the other day that the Xbone does, so that's a plus at least.

How do you feel about it as a console? I rate it pretty low myself at this point after I think 3 months. I have a lot of cases where things crash to to desktop on launch 2 or 3 times and about twice a week I launch something and NO input works other than the xbox button thing to get back to the desktop. There's a few games I love on it. I really like coop plants v zombies, I like Child of Light a lot (this month's games for gold game), Rayman Legends (was free and I it's one of my favorite games in years!) and a few others, and I love the controller. The system itself feels like it's still about 4/5 done to me.
