Another thing that burns me is when you have to "Advance" past each and every "Preview on the disc! Haven't encountered that with BDs yet, but many late release DVDs are guilty of this. But that's a little off-topic and more of a Movie Watching gripe in itself!
I only own I think 4 BDs but they all have the option to hit top menu or some such and skip past all the previews.

The last game that really wow'd me was Mario Kart 8. Just so much pizzazz and color! Nothing on my Xbox One has done that yet. I've only played a handful of games, though. Forza Horizons 2 is a pretty cool experience to be just drifting through the fields and stuff. I can't imagine that looking as good at the right framerate on the 360 but I'm not sure that's a huge deal for me.

I do grant the industry and other fans the fact that for me games are a more permanent thing. I don't just consume them and move on. For that reason things like stability and long term availability are a big deal.
I think a lot of people consume games the way I consume movies and books. I rarely revisit either and don't worry much if they go poof. Games I waltz through and feel more connected to, so I want them to remain and I want them to be simple escapism from life.
I also find I prefer a sort of wide and shallow complexity where my games are organized laterally and are not in a sort of decision tree that modern consoles tend to place them in where I'm often navigating through screens and menus to get to my goal.
There's nothing that makes my enjoyment superior or anything, it's just a different goal.

I agree with a lot of the discontent with content hoisting to a point. I like that I can have one less device hanging off my TV, though. I really like streaming my own media because I can leave my discs far away from my children and Plex and the other inbuilt dlna etc stuff allows me to do that. We had a roku that we used for a while but that's not really necessary at this point.
I think the PS3 had it right. There was functionality but not a boatload of ads and what not all over.

I just got an Xbone last weekend and I'm still not entirely sure how to use the interface. I can get where I want but I'm often surprised by what buttons do. It has some very nice features. Like when my daughter decided to crawl over and turn it off I was was able to boot and go right where my since and I left off, but the first time I had to actually close an application was a nightmare. And finding the settings was also not immediately obvious at all. Over all I'm still in the judging phase but it's way more complex than I'd prefer. The Wii U is like put game in, go. Now you are playing a game. That I like.

I've very risk averse in game purchases, but now I recall:
Devil May Cry 4.
I loved the demo and then when I got the game I realized that a good portion of the game was backtracking around the demo. And timed jumping puzzles with a freaky camera? Piss off.

#IDARB is free for GOLD members:
https://store.xbox.com/en-US/Xbox-One/Games/IDARB/13e6deb3-7ad2-498a-b5ec-6f35d2d7c6e8
This was a fun surprise for me. I got it just because I just got an Xbone and it was on the game for gold section. It's quite a bit of simple fun.

Sorry, I used the first MK7 and Heart Mario 3D Land. I got excited then my kid woke up with a cold.
Good lord I gotta stop foruming during kids + coffee time. Mario 3D land and pokemon heart gold. I own MK7, I make no sense.
-
Huh, this was free on the FireTV and I have a 360 paddle for that but I ended up ditching the device because the entire experience was terrible. I figured these games would be meh at best.

It's worth noting, ROMs tend to work in specific MAME versions. Getting them together is ideal. But realize that there is no 'arcade console' exactly. You are emulating a ton of hardware configurations so it's understandably less simple than zsnes.

The comment folding and overall structure makes Facebook difficult to use for much more than glorified comments.

3, but really because of my memories playing it with friends. For gameplay I liked 2 because it stood out, even if it was a hack for us lowly US gamers.

Any experience I've had with gaming groups on Facebook has been awful.

Maybe this is it....my most heaviest played games don't actually require a ton of precision so maybe I'm not noticing it is gone. Like, I'm not sniping cameras in GoldenEye much any more....I play the AKI wrestling games (only use for stick is to waggle for a special, no precision at all) and Mario Party 3. Maybe mine would feel off if it mattered. I might pick up a spare stick just to have it--I have some 3rd party Yobo controllers still packed up for back ups and they work, but I don't really like them.
The ones I see in the wild are, almost always, total toast. Literally, you can tilt the controller and the stick is totally loose, it just flops back and forth. Sad.
I will say the replacement sticks I've used tend to err on the too sensitive side. Can be surprisingly ruinous to things like Mario 64.

I never did get around doing getting my DC back online using a dial in server on my PC. I'd love to run around PSO again, though. I wish the old BBAs didn't cost so much.

For linux, configuration or really any user files, will usually be in your home directory with a period before then to cause them to be hidden by default. mame would put it's stuff in a .mame folder. If you type "which mame" it should tell you where the executable lives. I did find that some versions of wahcade didn't let you know if you closed the wahcade-setup without saving. But yeah, I usually find Linux emulation to be a slow dance where I occasionally didn't know all the moves. I'm used linux personally and professionally for like 15 years now or something so it's all in stride for me at this point but I usually don't recommend it.
Then there's the fact that these projects tend to get abandoned a lot.
-
So for mapping I just launched mame by just typing mame into the termainal then used my keyboard + control deck deal to set the bindings manually. It was a little funky since partway through you'll lose some bindings to the stick and have to sorta go between each for input. I know nothing of your controls, so I'm not sure if what I did would work for you.

Tempest, I can't help with game recommendations, but I wanted to say that I am pretty sure Club Nintendo downloads are generic codes and can be redeemed on any system regardless of if or what Club Nintendo account is linked to it. Basically, I don't think it checks to make sure you have the proper Club Nintendo account linked when you redeem a download code. For instance, I created a separate CN account to use duplicate survey codes on, and I've used the resulting free download game codes I earned from that account on a spare Wii that has no Club Nintendo account linked. Just wanted to point that out in case you thought couldn't get all these games on the same system.
Yep, I got my son some games this way.

Yes. I think I'll continue my Duke3D activities with the original files, add-on packs, dosbox, and Eduke32. Can't stand DRM and server check-ins.
Right, I'd think GoG would be the way to go over steam with older games any day. I say that as a Steam fan. Just not for everything.
-
I ran across wahcade, but after researching a fair amount went with QM2C. There certainly are a few MAME front ends out there.
It's an ok front end. I'd probably swap it if I wasn't lazy. It does just sort work, though.
-
I was looking at Duke 3D on Steam. Now I don't use Steam so I know little about it, but is it possible to d'l something and transfer it, D3D to a PC that is not connected to the internet? Or must the steam client be installed and connected all the time?
Steam is required, although you might be able to swap out the files in the download to something like a shareware or other client for older stuff like Duke3D, doom, heretic, etc. I see http://www.eduke32.com/ might be a candidate for that. Not sure though, never actually done it myself.
Steam has an offline mode that I've used but I haven't left it offline for all that long, not sure how long it lasts between logins. I know it used to sort of lockout after a while.

I used mint, wahcade, mame with an xarcade and it's pretty flawless.

Reminds me of a friend's SNES haul a few years back. Basically all classic SNES RPGs released in US, the DKC series, the Marios and then some whatever stuff. 25 bucks. It came from some parents with a child in college.
Great score, though.

Are video game consoles too complex?

"Hm, according to this, 45% of all crashes happen with this plugin load and patch level. Interesting. Randomly pick someone from the sample and send them a cupcake."
I'm not insulting you. I think that'd be awesome.
