  1. They are only original once, but where is the restoration versus repair line drawn? In my opinion, if you are using "correct" replacements, you are repairing the unit. If you go into cosmetics, it would be a restoration. If you use parts that work, but are not original, you are building a hack. And, if you are scratch making one with original parts, you are making a recreation. I always engrave mine on the bottoms after a MAJOR overhaul, or recreation is built. It is getting harder everyday to find an unmolested original unit, so putting information out there is key.
  2. Went to Traders Village one time, and there was a feller that brought in a Heavy 6er, some games, and controllers. I didn't want to cut into his business, so I just watched as the vendor bought the whole box for 20 bucks. After the transaction was completed, I inquired about the 6er, and he told me probably 120 bucks. I understand having to make a profit to keep the doors open on a business, but don't understand why folks feel they need to retire on one item's profit.
  3. Ultimarc makes a dedicated 4/8 magnetically centered joystick that converts from 4 to 8 way by pulling up and turning the handle. I've used them, and they're pretty slick. Called the Mag Stik Plus. http://www.ultimarc.com/controls.html
  4. In the 2600 forum, most folks say to run it through a vcr. I can tell you that my 2600 that has the component mod kit, looks better run through a vcr first. A lot of folks claim it is the difference between the resolution of a crt and flat screen that makes them look bad, but in my opinion, it has more to do with screen size. Kinda like having an ugly spouse, take pictures far away, and they look great, up close, not so much. Also, some newer TV's won't recognize the minute signals old consoles put out, hence the vcr trick. And yes, when Goodwill was putting out TV's at 10 bucks a piece (crt's), I would physically hook my console up at their store and check em. (this works better if you prepay for one or two, so they know you're not wasting their time). Mileage may vary, but barring spending the big bucks on hardware, expect it to look like a low quality blown up picture. Now, you can play with the screen size and usually get them to look pretty good, but I've never seen a game that has lots of written words that are easy to make out on a lcd.
  5. Starpath Frogger, for two player games Fishing Derby, for homebrews Go Fish.
  6. Making the most out of stuff that you already have, can't get any better than that.
  7. And it even works AFTER transport... Nice!
  8. Not exactly chess, but strategy none the less. http://www.arcade-history.com/?n=checkmate&page=detail&id=444
  9. Bought a Wico command control joystick for him. Item was exactly as described, tracking provided immediately, and he followed up several times (especially for such a low dollar sale). I look forward to more dealings with him.
  10. It's pretty rough at the moment. I'm going to recap the power supply before I even think about plugging it in. On these old ones, in my opinion anyhow, they should never be plugged in until the power supply has been recapped, and the voltages adjusted. I'm hoping that the proms are ok, on account that I don't have an i/c writer . The rest of it I can pretty much handle.
  11. To be honest, it's not the game that is impressive, it's the fact that you are immersed into it. Ledzep makes a valid point. While I truly like the 2600 game, it doesn't stand up to the arcade. Not on account that it's not enjoyable ( it is), but because it can't put you into the game...
  12. Picked this thing up today, it's pretty rough, but I'll have it lookin like a diamond in a goats rear end in a month or so.
  13. You're a riot, Doug. lol If ya had one more ET, you could make a table...
  14. Pretty cool stuff there. Gonna do Houston later this year?
  15. A vader, with 2 Wico's, and three commons...23.00 shipped...
  16. Reposted want list at http://atariage.com/forums/topic/228690-trade-3tb-harddrive-for-atari-2600-stuff/
  17. Excellent point. If you're a later generation player, or don't like jerking the hell out of a non -precision controller, the Sega controller is the obvious choice. To be honest. even I can pick up a few points by using one, but again, it's all in what you want.
  18. godzillajoe, is this the same cart as the one I posted?
  19. Most of these things were more or less made to be able to be laid on their backs. Problems come about from repairs operators have done over the years. I always check, as previously stated, that all of the shipping hardware it still there before moving them.
  20. Didn't really mean to post the same reply twice, I thought I didn't post it. Anyhow, I don't know how thick these are, but here ya go. http://shop.hobbylobby.com/products/6-x-4-acrylic-box-631911/
  21. Old aluminum bread pans turned upside down, like you get at goodwill for a buck or two. Could use a Nintendo, could even shove the cord in the door when not in use. I saw some clear high density boxes at hobby lobby one time. I think folks put flowers in them. You could get pretty creative with them.
  22. Aluminum bread pans turned upside down maybe? The old heavy ones like you can get at goodwill for a buck or two. Could use an old Nintendo, could even shove the cord in the door when not in use. Ran across some high density plastic boxes at hobby lobby once. They were clear, so you could get creative there. I reckon folks put flowers in them or something.
