  1. The one thing I would like to see improvement on for the HDX is a server for Mac or Linux. However, in the mean time using Wine works just fine for running the server app (just the file navigation is a bit rough on the Mac platform).

  2. OK, I finally got around to doing this. Here is my TI 99/4a setup.

This is my desk with both my TI 99/4a and my every day Mac (I am a programmer by trade, but mostly "big data" and machine learning stuff). The TI 9/4a is the original unit I bought with my paper route money back in 1983. I have since enhanced the console with a F18A, and enhanced my PEB with both the flex card tune up and the 2 amp power upgrade, though I haven't yet installed the second disk drive to justify it.

    TI 99/4a Desk

    Inside my PEB:

    Installed expansion cards

There you will find the upgrade flex card, the standard 32K card, a P-Code card (old style without the power switch), an RS-232 upgraded with HDX (purchased from Arcade Shopper), a SID Master card I assembled (love that SID 6581 music), and my original Myrac disk controller.
I have a decent collection of carts, but they are in storage, so no pictures. I like having carts like the 2048K Games 1 so that I don't have to have a pile of them on my desk. Also love the HDX connection with my Mac.
Also in storage is an MBX unit, an OSCAR Data Bar, a Super Sketch, a non-working triple tech card (need to fix that), a ram disk card, and some other oddities. I would love to pick up a Geneva someday. I remember wanting one of those when they came out, but was headed off to college and they had fancy computers there to play with, so my TI went into storage until about 5 years ago when I brought it out to show my kids what computers used to be like. I also remember wanting the CP/M card when I was a kid because I somehow had the belief that it was the best language to know. I also recently picked up some beige units that I let my kids play on, and a nanoPEB.
I use the TI these days mostly for nostalgia gaming, teaching programming to my kids (TI Logo II and TI Basic), and enjoying the currently vibrant home-brew scene going on here at Atari Age. If I ever get time (day job and family keeps me busy), I intend to (re)learn assembly language and see what I can do. I probably would be most interested in messing with the SID Master card.

  3. With this demo of Super Mario Bros for the TI-99/4A / F18A I wish you a Happy New Year 2016.

I found I had to upgrade the firmware of my F18A for this program to work correctly (I had v1.5). But once I did ... OMG, I did not think this quality of gaming was possible on the TI. Just wow. Great job Rasmus!

  4. So I came across the SID Master 99 and I want one! But I don't own a PEB, Do I have any options here or am I stuck having to track down a PEB and paying out the wazoo? I'm trying to focus on using the Ti for musical purposes and really wish there was some sort of MIDI interface for it but I'd be happy just being able to use a SID Master with Extended Basic.

Yes, you have to get a PEB for a SID Master card. But note that the SID Master card is not a MIDI card. It is a card to host the SID 6581 or SID 8580 music synthesizer chips which were originally in Commodore computers like the C64.

I made a SID Master card a while back. The hardest part about it was finding a SID chip that worked. I suggest you read this before embarking on a effort to find a working SID chip. I ended up ordering one from some folks in Germany that were selling "NOS" 6581 chips. It works great. I strongly suggest getting the 6581 chip rather than the 8580 chip as most SID encoded music was programmed for the particular sounds that the 6581 chip produced.

  5.

To everyone else, hope you enjoy the article. It was a pleasure to write it and get the 99s some coverage in the mag.

Thanks, I did enjoy the article. I bought it through the iOS app, would like to get a paper copy at some point.

  6. Keep your eyes peeled for next months issue of the UK based magazine "Retro Gamer".

They are finally doing a feature on the good old TI99/4a, yes-after years of neglect they have finally seen the light. ;-)

There is a downloadable version of the magazine available, so no need to miss out if you live in the North of Mongolia.

So I was in London last week and picked up the currently on sale Retro Gamer magazine. While the magazine was pretty cool and certainly well worth a few quid, there was nothing about the TI 99/4a in it. When is that issue supposed to come out?

  7. Absolute final cartridge version (unless a serious bug is discovered) with the following new features:

    ...

    Enjoy!

Are there plans to sell a pre-made cartridge as with your prior games? While I can burn the PROM myself, I wouldn't mind buying a remade one if only to throw some money your way.

  8. I have a black console that suddenly stopped outputting sound. Any recommendations how to proceed with repairs. OLD_CS1, this is your old console that you had done some work on trying to get s-video working. Not saying your work caused this, but maybe you'll have some special insight.

    Darryl

I had a similar problem. For me, the problem was some of the pins connecting the A/V out DIN-5 to the circuit board had worked themselves loose after years of plugging and pulling the video connector. This was fixed by re-soldering the pins to the circuit board.
