  1. I don't think people understand that such a clause (require a working proto for HW projects) is actually there to HELP them get support.

As I recall, his stated problem with KS's rules is that they don't enforce them. He linked to one campaign that recently ended, which is a great example. The strange thing is that because the RVGS team is acting like Gollum with the One Ring on technical information, RVGS seems to be only a few steps ahead (tooling; a controller).

For all we know, they have a fully-functional setup and are sitting around playing multiplayer games on their yet-to-be-finished 16-bit core while drinking their craft beer. They may know this, but we certainly don't

  2. Anyone ever use this Kicktraq-like site for Indiegogo projects? Currently predicting 82%-funded ($1,604,359) http://crowdcharts.com/campaign/retro-vgs

It's still very early in the campaign, so I'm not sure how accurate it is. Still, even that 82% would be amazing and would indicate a market for something. Like a more-stable campaign and at least pictures of a dev board, perhaps?

Rate of support is slowing down:

    37K in 2.5h -> 135h to goal -> ~6 days

Still good but the drop at almost half speed is not a good sign.

  3. $40 for shipping the console in America. Someone mentioned it's 70 Euros to Europe. Paid in advance.

$40 seems pretty hefty, but it's not my money.

Also just to be fair to Parrothead, et al, I believe I misread what "carry priority shipping" meant when I said shipping was included. I believe he meant that campaign funders will get their consoles shipped before any post-campaign buyers do. The Facebook discussion was about buying consoles after the campaign ends.

  4. That's another thing -- none of the current announced games wow me. There's hardly any exclusives, as I have most of those games already either through backing them on Kickstarter or getting them through Steam/GOG.

That you can plug them into your console in twenty years and they will still play (as opposed to Windows programs becoming useless) is what's supposed to wow you.

  5. Back the project or not, that is your choice BUT keep in mind that as of now they made no promise whatsoever to be a retro-emu, just some vague mention of the fact that it could be possible, with custom adapters etc....

So if you become a backer NOW, make sure you like their current announced game line up.

Like I wrote before, what's going on with the FPGA they are shipping if it's only barely funded? Will it only run PONG? The twice-the-funding-amount level is exactly what they've been saying all along the FPGA would be like.

    ETA:

Yeah we are officially off this project :D We'll take our 30+ titles in our library and new projects somewhere else Ha!

Still, I hope they at least contacted you and it wasn't just a "you made us look bad; you're outta here" kind of thing.

After all, it was the vagueness that was the problem.

  6. The Indiegogo page is so lacking in details I've moved from "looks cool; lets give them a chance" side over to the "snake oil" side. It may well be a rock-solid design but they've given us nothing beyond "hey, look at our credentials; we got this."

I don't even know what it means that they're shipping with FPGA but at twice the goal they'll ship with FPGA that does what they've promised all along it would. And why no explanation for the expansion port other than more video output?

SNA3D is dropped (not even in the negotiation category) ... hope it wasn't our fault.

I noticed that too. Awkward. :?

  7. I think that's 37% of the remaining 1/3; not of the full thing?

I love that 37% of the pledge goes into their pocket as stipend (at half their normal rate) ...
for 2M$ -> 750K for 1Y or less -> it's 3 of them 250K$ each -> so today each of them makes now 500K$ per less than a Y ... holy schmoly ... and you can't put your own fuxxing money where your mouth is?

If 37% is the figure for the strectch goal (bigger FPGA) each of them then will pockets 0.5M$ of the pledges .... F U!!!

  8. come on guys.. I'll stay cautiously optimistic but if you spent a year fucking around with molds and what not, their hardware guy could have cobbled together SOMETHING. I don't care how lame it is. Just f'ing bring it tomorrow or you run no chance at all..

Yeah, I hope they bring something. And not just some sort of Bigfoot-like video or pictures, but something nice and clear -- perhaps even a video of their hardware showing a game running. Sure, it won't fit inside their case but at least we'd know better if the hardware basics are solid.

At least today we'll hopefully get some answers. If it's more vague non-answers to allegedly protect their IP then I think they're just continuing to nail shut the RVGS-branded coffin. Or, it may be too late; we'll see. It's showtime!

  9. New GameGavel post, FWIW:

    Hey Everyone,

Just wanted to reiterate that we have had discussions with Kickstarter's, Head of Games, right up to Monday and they point blank said you don't need a working prototype even when their policies say otherwise. We know our crowd and couldn't in all honesty launch there without a working prototype that is nothing less than a real life RVGS board running a game or we would be breaking their policies and would certainly be called out for it.

Indiegogo is a very large and successful crowdfunding campaign and have done rather well in the hardware side of things. They have been after us for the past 3-4 months about bringing us to their side of the fence. Needless to say, I would have preferred to use Kickstarter, but again, we don't have the $$ to get a very real prototype made and thusly needed to make a decision to use IGG.

Our plan is to get the prototype built very soon. We have the design all locked up and have all our supplier relationships ready to go as well as our CM for the PCB and PCBA.

This can all come together quite fast once we know we have the funding. So, if we can hit our goal early on into the campaign we can begin the process before the campaign ends to get a head start. I have confidence in John and Steve, who have been in the video game hardware/software business for 25+ years, and have worked for Atari, Apple, Sega and recently SONY, that they can take the design they have architected the past 8 months and turn into a working prototype. If we had the money to do it ourselves we would have obviously done it.

The bottom line is these are career hardware guys and this isn't rocket science. It will come together fast and in front of backers eyes if they let us do it.

    Only time will tell :)

Seriously, thanks to all of you over here whether you are for us or against us. We've learned a lot and factored much of this and what info we've received on Facebook into our design and engineered this down as much as possible to get it within a price many will be able to afford.

  10. Sooooo, with that in mind.. Why not go for software emulation in that case? I mean, if you've got a beefy enough SoC that can output HDMI and all those bells and whistles, the case for including an FPGA becomes kinda moot IMO.

    Just a thought...

Along with what phoenixdownita wrote, also a good read is Parrothead's Sept. 2nd post (if you haven't already). This was when the official price was announced and there was much outrage. They apparently briefly considered removing FPGA or having a non-FPGA option. But, I think the cart adapters idea won out.

It'll be interesting to see if the adapters make it into the campaign, even as a stretch goal.

  11. Why no Nintendo cores? The design patents on the systems are all expired. Only the copyright on games themselves are still valid. Any unlicensed or homebrew is fair game. See also SNA3D.

I would encourage people to actually listen to that portion of the podcast (hence why I marked the time) instead of only my interpretation. That whole bit wasn't very clear to me.

  12. Eval board and VGA monitor > Cardboard and connectors.

    I got nothin'.

    post-39941-0-61479500-1442610501_thumb.gif

Enough with the "eval" board, that would only have told us which manufacturer they were going with for the FPGA and not that they actually built any core on it.

I bet that they are planning to "convince" many of the Mist/Chamaleon core developers (and that kevin guy from NES HDMI fame) to port their cores for a dime or less so they can sell the console.

A proto with their components on it is what we need, showing off the "hello world" of the eval board itself at this point would be double insult.

And, here's why we won't likely see any dev electronics. No matter what they do it won't be enough for some of you; even the ones who don't wish to spend a penny.
