A fun little week for gaming this week! I spent the whole week just kinda dinking around on my RG353V, playing several games of Monopoly and doing a full playthrough of Pooh and Tigger's Hunny Safari for the GBC, then put those two analog sticks at the bottom to good use playing a few games of Robotron 2084 for the 7800. I also decided to try out the Bluetooth and 720p HDMI out features to consolize the handheld and play Die Hard Arcade for the Saturn on the big screen modern TV with my 8BitDo SN30 Pro controller.
It worked pretty dang seamlessly and was a lot of fun, and I really like that now that my SN30 Pro controller is paired with the device and configured anytime I turn on the controller it automatically switches to the SN30 Pro as the default player 1 input. Smart programming! I may have to pick up a 8BitDo M30 controller next week to pair with it as well for all my Sega gaming needs on the big screen.

I've updated the first post's FAQ to cover a few cool new things, such as support for Rikki & Vikki's custom hardware on the 7800 GameDrive (thanks to SainT) and ProSystem-libretro (thanks to Tachi). The latter even supports Retro Achievements, neat!
That would be nice, but it's also largely up to Atari to ensure the 2600+ supports the game. If this sort of thing is important to you (or anyone else reading), please let Atari know you'd like to play Rikki & Vikki on the 2600+ and/or purchase the game from them.
I bought Rikki & Vikki on Steam today but can't exactly figure out how to get the ProSystem-libretro core in RetroArch to run it, since it seems to only want to recognize .A78 files. I'm also guessing that foxbox.bin doesn't have the music included, so I was wondering exactly what the procedure is to get Rikki & Vikki running in ProSystem-libretro? Does it need to be converted into a .A78 file with the same program you'd use to it play on the GameDrive?

Skippy what about multi disc games? Like D2 or Shenmue. Have you tried any of them and progressed past the first disc of any by chance? I wonder if they load multi disc ok?
Yup, that problem was solved a few years back and every emulator for disc based games now has a "disc swap" option in the menu that you can bring up at any time during a game.

Last week was too busy to get in any gaming time, but I'm back this week with a little time to contribute! I also got a couple new emulation handhelds this week and, after spending a fair few hours setting them up and configuring them to my liking, I'm really enjoying them!
It's really neat that technology has finally advanced enough to have a small pocketable device like the Retroid Pocket 4 Pro that's powerful enough to play all the GameCube and Wii games I want full speed and upscaled to 720p, and I'm really digging the classic Game Boy form factor of the RG353V for all the retro systems that are less demanding to emulate.

Good week for gaming this week! I ended up finishing Tomb Raider for the original PlayStation as well as Metroid Prime Remastered on the Switch, then spent a bit of time checking out Tomb Raider I•II•III Remastered on the Switch as well! After playing through the first 4 levels of the first Tomb Raider game on the Switch remaster and comparing it to the PS1 original I just finished I definitely feel like the remaster is easily the best way to experience Lara's 3 best classic adventures in 2024, much like how Metroid Prime Remastered is the best way to experience the original Metroid Prime if you ask me.

Metroid Prime Remastered doesn't go under Game Cube... it does have some changes other than the graphics.
That's fine, @carlsson can put it under Nintendo Switch instead and I'll log my time for it going forward as Metroid Prime Remastered on Switch

Lots of games for me this week! I started off the week playing through Klonoa: Empire of Dreams for the Game Boy Advance and enjoyed it immensely, then did a little playthrough of Super Mario Land to pass a little time one evening. The big highlight of the week for me was joining a retro handheld focused Discord server where everyone votes on games to play each month, and every month there's 3 games to play. One game made before 1996, one made between 1996 and 1999, and one game made in the year 2000 or later.
This month the games of the month ended up being Kirby's Dreamland 2, Metal Slug 2, and Metroid Prime so I got started on 2 of the 3!

Normally I hate gravity based games so I ended up putting off playing this one until there was just 20 minutes left in the round tonight and figured I'd just get some participation points, but as it turned out Thrust+ Platinum Edition was actually a lot of fun and I wish I would have given it a chance earlier in the week! No bonus game for me this week, due to my time mismanagement.

I played a pretty good number of games this week, including a couple games for the Atari 2600 High Score Club, finished up my playthrough of the original Sonic the Hedgehog, then did a full playthrough of Dead Space: Extraction for the Wii on my Odin 2. I also installed some snazzy new Super Famicom colored buttons in the Odin 2 that I think came out really nicely!

Coyote what device is that you are playing on?
It's an Android based emulation handheld called an Anbernic RG ARC-D. Not the most catchy name in the world, but it's a really nice little Sega style device that can emulate everything from Atari 2600 up through and including original PlayStation perfectly. In this case I'm using the Stella core in Retroarch for my Atari 2600 needs, and wrapping it all up in an attractive frontend called Daijisho.
Here's a better picture of the device:
PS: Ignore the blue tint to the screen. In real life the colors on the screen look completely normal, my camera just sucks at photographing IPS panels

That thing sounds incredible! I guess you get what you pay for. How are those thumbsticks?
I like 'em! They're similar in size to Nintendo Switch sticks, but concave on top instead of convex and feel a bit sturdier and more precise to me.

If you would have told me a year ago that in 2024 I'd be spending $400 on an Android handheld for emulation I'd have said you were nuts, but this week my new AYN Odin 2 Pro arrived in the mail and here we are.
What I got for that rather substantial chunk of change is a device about the size of a Nintendo Switch Lite that sports the most powerful Android processor on the market, a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset, with 12 GB of RAM, a lovely 6" 1080p screen, both HDMI and USB-C display port video out, an enormous 8000 mAh battery that lasts around 20 hours of gameplay between charges, and an excellent suite of controls with drift-proof hall sensor analog sticks and hall sensor analog triggers.
What all that translates to in practical terms is that it can play everything from Atari 2600 all the way up to just about the entire GameCube, Wii, and PlayStation 2 game libraries upscaled to 1080p without breaking a sweat; and can play most games upscaled to 4K through it's USB-C video output for playing on the big screen. It can also be docked and connected to a Dolphinbar and Wii remote for playing Wii games on the big screen with proper motion controls.
This week I put those features to good use and played a few old favorite GameCube and Nintendo Wii games! It was an absolute blast seeing my favorite GameCube and Wii titles upscaled to 1080p and being able to play them anywhere on a little handheld like this, so I think it's going to be a really fun year for gaming with this thing!

Dig Dug (Game 1, B/B) - 53 minutes
Space Invaders (Game 4, B/B) - 31 minutes

Back at it for a new season! I had to take last season off due to a nasty case of tendonitis in my left arm and not really being able to hold and operate a joystick anymore, but I'm back this season with a new emulation handheld that I can hold and play comfortably. On that note, nice to see someone else playing with an RG ARC this season @PengPeng0118!

Space Invaders (Game 4, B/B): 3,390

Only a couple games for me this week, though I do have a new handheld to talk about! A few weeks ago I picked up an Anbernic RG ARC-D and I really like it! It's basically a modern Sega Nomad in it's design, with the addition of a Select button as well as L1/L2 and R1/R2, and an RK3566 processor that's powerful enough to play everything up through and including original PlayStation full speed no problemo and a very nice looking 4" 480p 4:3 aspect ratio screen that my camera really can't do justice. You can tell Anbernic put a ton of work into getting the controls just right, because it feels exactly like an original 6 button Sega Genesis controller in the feel of the buttons and D-pad as well as the texture of the plastic.
They just absolutely nailed that classic Sega controller feel, and I think this is going to be my new favorite way to play Sega Genesis, Sega CD, and 32X games. It can play some Sega Saturn as well, though it's not quite powerful enough to play the entire Saturn library full speed. I also really like the 720p HDMI out for playing on the big screen and just using the handheld as a controller. My only complaint about it is that the battery life isn't quite as long as some of my other retro handhelds, but you'll still get a good 4 hours or so of playtime out of it before needing to plug it in to charge. All in all it's just a really lovely Sega style device, and for about $100 I'd recommend it to any Sega Genesis fan looking to give emulation a try

So, is the GBC version of Monopoly that good? I ask as I know that the NES version is supposed to be an excellent rendition, but haven't played either of the two. Any insight would be appreciated.
I don't know if it's the best version of Monopoly or not, but the Game Boy Color version is my personal favorite! It's pretty similar to the NES version but with cleaner more vibrant graphics and a slower pacing. The NES version is really frenetic with how fast the dice roll, how fast the pieces move, and how fast the computer jumps through menus and selects options. It's hard for me to keep track of what's going on and who owns what in the NES version, so I appreciate the slower and more relaxing pace of the Game Boy Color version.
The GBC version also has more menu options than the SNES, Genesis, and GBA versions and the ability to trade or mortgage properties at any time, which I also appreciate. I haven't played every single console port of Monopoly, but of the ones I have played the Game Boy Color version is by far my favorite.

A small week for gaming for me this first week of the new year, but I did manage to finish Alien Hominid on the GameCube and started in on my yearly playthrough of Alien: Isolation on the Switch. Still slowly working my way through Ocarina of Time on the side, but I know I'll finish it eventually
On a side note, a couple days ago I finally finished saving up and purchased an AYN Odin 2 Pro so soon I'll be able to play the entire GameCube and PlayStation 2 libraries to my heart's content, and upscaled to 1080p in both handheld mode and docked on the TV like a Nintendo Switch! It should take about two weeks to arrive in the mail, but expect to see quite a bit of GameCube time from me this year!

A good week for gaming around here this week! Everything I played was played on my Retroid Pocket 3+, which mostly consisted of continuing to make my way through Ocarina of Time for the N64. I did get in a couple games of Monopoly for the Game Boy Color too, played a bit of what is probably the best home console port of Xevious on the PC Engine, and completed half a dozen more levels Alien Hominid for the GameCube. I was planning on finishing Alien Hominid this week but ended up getting distracted by a very long Ken Burns documentary
Lastly, on Christmas morning I parked myself in front of the TV and used the HDMI out on my RP3+ to play Christmas NiGHTS into Dreams for the Sega Saturn on the big screen to commemorate the holiday! I had never played a NiGHTS game before but, once I learned the rather strange game mechanics, I really enjoyed it and think I'd like to play the full NiGHTS into Dreams game once I finish up Alien Hominid!
Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good NiGHTS 🎄

What have you PLAYED weekly tracker 2024 (ALL GENERATIONS)
in Gaming General Discussion
Posted
Not a whole lot of gaming for me this week, mostly just several games of Monopoly while I watched TV or worked on random tasks. For better or worse though I did learn the limits of my new Retroid Pocket 4 Pro handheld this week though. What I've come to find out is emulating GameCube and PlayStation 2 games is not like emulating Dreamcast, N64, original PlayStation, Sega Saturn, or any earlier generation systems.
When emulating Dreamcast and below you simply load up the games you want to play and they work just like on original hardware. No need to mess around with settings or worry about glitches or crashes, everything just works providing you have powerful enough hardware to run the emulators. GameCube and PS2 emulation however is very much a work in progress, and only 70% or so of the game libraries for those systems will play without issue; and many of the games that do play will require a fair bit of tweaking settings I barely comprehend to get them to run without graphical glitches or slowdown.
This was the case with one of my favorite GameCube games, Star Fox Adventures, which is unfortunately among the 30% or so of GameCube games that still don't work terribly well in emulation. I spent several hours messing around with settings in the Dolphin emulator trying to get it into a playable state where it wasn't having lots of graphical glitches, freezing, and crashing, but alas I could not in spite of having more than powerful hardware to run it on.
So, for the time being at least, I think I'll stick to Dreamcast and below for emulation. I've had some good success emulating a few GameCube and Wii games like Alien Hominid and Dead Space: Extraction, but GameCube, Wii, and PS2 emulation still have a long way to go before they're the simple plug-and-play experience you get with emulating earlier consoles where everything just works the same as it would on original hardware and you don't have to tinker with settings.
Anyway, here's my times for the week...
Game Boy Advance
Max Payne - 45 minutes
Game Boy Color
Monopoly - 262 minutes
GameCube
Star Fox Adventures - 68 minutes
