My NES is the devil. I've done everything imaginable to make it as reliable as it can be, and yet it still always chooses the most infuriating times to freeze up in the middle of a game. I swear that nothing made before the Sega Genesis ever works right around here.

If you get a top loader make sure to add the cap to get rid of the vertical lines. The front loader was a lot of unnecessary plastic and VCR-looks to avoid being associated with older systems (although the Famicom was top loading and they run great). Have you clipped your security chip? It helped a lot with mine.

Yup! I disabled the 10NES chip long ago and put a really nice US made 72 pin connector in it—after having some bad experiences with poorly spec'd Chinese connectors—but it's still flakey at best. Getting to play for more than half an hour without the game freezing at some point is a real H&P (hope and pray) procedure.

I do plan on picking up a top loader at some point, though I'd have to have someone else install the cap since I never learned how to solder. Right now I'm too occupied with saving up for a custom multicade and getting a properly working Atari 2600 to buy a top loader, but I'll get around to it eventually. =)
