Today's hypothetical question for those interested in astrophysics: What if dark matter is aether? As in, something that doesn't actually exist but we assume it does because our current understanding of physics is incomplete.
I suspect they'll figure out someday that they got the theory of gravity completely wrong, then when they plug the numbers into their new equation, everything will click. Either that, or it will get progressively worse until they give up when they realize they know absolutely nothing.
I'm thinking the former is probably the most likely, but it's really all speculation until someone comes up with a new and testable theory of gravity that doesn't require any free parameters. That doesn't mean it isn't fun/interesting to speculate about though. =)
