I just finished the water temple in Ocarina of Time for the very first time and it really wasn't as bad as I was expecting, I didn't even need to use a guide. The water temple in Twilight Princess was way more convoluted and confusing.

  It was definitely time consuming and took me a few hours to figure out where the water levels needed to be at and what I had to do to get all the keys, but pretty manageable once I found the compass and could see where all the treasure chests were located. It was still difficult for sure, but not unreasonably so.

  I agree, I just played through the game for the first time last year, and I did fine with it. I even did it without the water breathing outfit.
