  1. Not my video, but this will show you the basic technique for getting really high scores in Ghost Manor. https://youtu.be/tVOJWNLKkeI
  2. It might be a bit early to start pondering it, but I think my big collecting goal for 2019 is going to be only buying games that I know I'll be excited to sit down and play as soon as I get them. I've bought way too many games this year that just went straight on the shelf with the thought of "It was a good price and I'll play that someday when I feel like it."

Actually, your story is worse though to be sure...It's just a bummer that I have one Wii for ROMs and one for Wii/GC games, but have to try to blindly swap out cables in the back, with barely any room to switch between them.

Ugh, that does sound like a pain! I feel like in a decade or two the Wii is probably going to end up being the next Sega CD or Jaguar CD where almost ever system you find has a non-working disc drive. On the upside of things my Wii still runs emulators just fine so I got out the Classic Controller and tried Super Castlevania IV for the first time. I've been playing that for the last hour and a half and it's pretty darn awesome!

A hacked Wii is an amazing system. I find myself playing it more than my retropie. They're super tempting to buy too in that I always see them pop up at thrift store for like $8.

  3. Oh wow, that is a beautiful 820 printer! Does it shake the table and make shrill noises loud enough to wake the neighbors when it starts printing? I've always imagined an 820 would

  5. Sadly no modern gaming for my household once again this week, though we did log a bunch of time for the classic gaming tracker playing Sega Genesis games. On the upside, I did fix up my Wii with a new disc drive this past week so I do have quite a few modern games to play if I can convince myself to sit down and devote the time it'll take to play through one. Maybe I'll pick out a survival horror game to play for Halloween on Wednesday.

With our Genesis collection being rather small at the moment all the games we played ended up being either on the excellent Genesis 6-Pak compilation cart or via emulation on the Wii, but it was still a great time even without access to the original carts. We started off the week doing another play through of the original Sonic the Hedgehog, swapping the controller between zones again but this time switching up the order so we each got to play the zones the other played during our play through last week. We didn't manage to get all the chaos emeralds this time around but it was still a lot of fun. Next the misses decided to give Streets of Rage a try, which she had never played before, and beat it with Blaze on her first attempt. She actually didn't use a single continue until she got to the final boss! After Sonic and Streets of Rage I spent some time checking out the other games on Genesis 6-Pak, including my arch nemesis game The Revenge of Shinobi, and for the first time in 25 years I finally managed to get past the waterfall section in the second level. I kept playing all the way up to level 6 before running out of continues, but now that I figured out how to get past the part of the second level that I've been stuck on for decades I'll definitely be looking forward to playing it again in the near future. I really enjoyed the Original mode in Super Hang-On as well and I have a feeling I'll be coming back to that game also before too long. Next up the misses and I sat down and checked out Splatterhouse 2 & 3 via emulation, and holy cow was Splatterhouse 3 ever awesome! We didn't manage to beat it but we did get all the way to level 5 with both Rick's wife and son still alive, which was no easy feat. We're definitely going to have to get a physical copy of that game before too long. Unfortunately Splatterhouse 2 wasn't nearly as fun and after less than an hour we were both feeling pretty tired of the tedious gameplay and having to replay every level 20 or 30 times before figuring out exactly when and where to jump, duck, attack, etc to avoid the endless barrage of cheap hits from the hordes of enemies. I don't think we'll be playing Splatterhouse 2 again any time soon. Lastly, the one other gaming highlight of the week for me was the time I spent trying out Castlevania: Bloodlines via emulation last night. Holy crap that game is awesome! It was everything I could ask for from a 16-bit Castlevania game, and the only complaint I could possibly make is that you only get two continues and that's it. Fortunately there is a password save system though, so I think with some practice I could eventually beat it with the two continues allotted if I spend the time to get good at it. What I do know for sure though is that physical copies of Castlevania: Bloodlines and Splatterhouse 3 have both jumped to the top of my Sega Genesis wants list! Looking ahead to next week I'm not too sure what I'll be playing. I did replace the disk drive in my Wii this week so I've got a ton of games I could play, I just haven't quite felt like investing myself in any 10 to 20+ hour long games lately; which pretty much every game on the Wii is. So for now I've been pretty content playing shorter 1 to 2 hour Sega Genesis games, but who knows, maybe I'll pick out something a little more modern and spooky to play for Halloween next week. I do know the misses was talking about playing Resident Evil 2 on the PlayStation next week, so maybe I'll pick out a survival horror game to sit down and spend some time with too. Until next week, happy gaming and a spooktacular Halloween to you and yours!
  7. The secret is that at the end of the game you're awarded 10,000 points for every cross you've collected, and coffins that contain crosses will have another cross in them if you leave the room and come back. The rest is up to you.
  8. Ghost Manor (Game 1, B/B Difficulty): 374,850 Room of Doom (Game 1, B/B Difficulty): 21,750
  9. It took some practice, but I finally got it. I wonder how far I was from the 84th wave kill screen, it couldn't have been very far. Demon Attack (Game 7, Difficulty A/A): 110,925 (ROLLAGE)
  10. I've always loved Ghost Manor, though like Cosmic Ark this might not be the best game to play competitively since there is an incredibly cheese ball strategy you can use to rack up 500,000+ points in one particular part of the game. For my first try I just played normally without using the point farming exploit. Ghost Manor (Game 1, B/B Difficulty): 151,751
  11. $95 for a complete copy of Castlevania: Chronicles for the PlayStation, which was a birthday present for the misses. I've never spent more than $60 on a game for myself, though I may end up caving in and getting a copy of Dokapon Kingdom for the Wii next year and that'll probably run me around $100.
  12. Golden Axe (Sega Genesis) The Revenge of Shinobi (Sega Genesis) Rock 'N Roll Racing (Sega Genesis)
  13. I'm pretty sure that for most gamers, even retro ones, the entire 7800 library is a hidden gem. That said, Ninja Golf and Midnight Mutants are two really fun and unique 7800 titles that are not to be missed.
  14. I cannot overstate just how much I adore 6-Pak for the Sega Genesis. This one $10 cart has kept me busy with great games to play for weeks now and should be a mandatory inclusion in any NTSC Genesis collection.

I never even heard of this cart but I would have passed on it even back in the day since I had all those games already.

Weird... so you just press start. I thought you had to select 2 player mode like other games.

Yeah, it is a bit of a weird system since you'd have no indication that the game is 2 player at all unless you plug in a second controller and press Start on controller 2. I just tried it this morning though and it works just fine. =)

  15. Personally I thought it was a great video and thoroughly enjoyed watching it, but I've always loved Nostalgia Nerd's stuff and I've never seen a video of his that I didn't like.
  16. I have no idea what's going on here either but I'm inclined to suspect that Biff is everyone in this thread with a post count of less than 150. In other words, one troublemaker with multiple accounts arguing with themselves for the sole purpose of creating drama. I'm too old for these sort of shenanigans.
  17. After watching the trailer I love the idea and they really do have an all-star cast behind it, which certainly bodes well for the Amico successfully coming to market. Perrin Kaplan knows how to get things done. My only criticism is that it would sure be nice if they changed the aesthetics of the system to make it look less like a piece of medical equipment and more like the Intellivision II. That said, I'm totally down for some Advanced Dungeons & Dragons: Cloudy Mountain and Treasure of Tarmin with modernized graphics!
  18. No modern gaming around here this past week I'm sorry to say, but we did log quite a bit of time for the classic gaming tracker! I did get a new disc drive for my Wii ordered too, so as soon as that shows up in the mail at some point this week I'll get it installed and get back to the Wii games I was working on last week.
  19. No modern gaming time at all around here this past week, but it was a great week for classic gaming! Atari 2600 Cosmic Ark (Emulated on Nintendo Wii) - 226 minutes Demon Attack (Emulated on Nintendo Wii) - 97 minutes Fire Fighter (Emulated on Nintendo Wii) - 12 minutes Game Boy Solar Striker - 22 minutes Tetris - 14 minutes PlayStation Alien Resurrection - 223 minutes Nightmare Creatures - 443 minutes Sega Genesis Golden Axe (Played on Genesis 6-Pak) - 148 minutes Sonic the Hedgehog (Played on Genesis 6-Pak) - 131 minutes Total Video Game Play Time This Week 1,316 minutes (21 hours 56 minutes) [1,316 minutes eligible] Individual System Play Times This Week PlayStation: 666 minutes Atari 2600: 335 minutes Sega Genesis: 279 minutes Game Boy: 36 minutes With my Wii out of commission until I can install a new disc drive in it (which I ordered for it last night, so the Wii should be up and running again by next weekend) I wasn't sure exactly what to play this week, so I went rooting through my wife's PlayStation collection until something caught my eye. The game I settled on was Nightmare Creatures, which I ended up doing a full play through of and beating this week. You can find full thoughts on the game here in the Games Beaten in 2018 thread, but suffice it to say I had an awesome time with it. The big highlight of the past week though was getting my old backlit Game Boy back from the fellow AtariAger who bought it, and I can safely say that I will never let go of this system ever again. I don't think I've been this excited to get a game system since I was 7 years old and got a Sega Genesis for Christmas! I haven't spent a ton of time playing the Game Boy yet, but I did do a full play through of Solar Striker and a round of Tetris on it over the weekend. As far as my other gaming time for the week went, it was mostly focused on playing some Atari 2600 High Score Club games. I feel like I'm doing pretty well so far in this season of the HSC and I'm having a lot of fun competing too, which is the most important thing for sure. The misses did a fair bit of gaming this past week too, first finishing up and beating Alien Resurrection on the PlayStation then (after watching me play for it a bit) started her own game of Nightmare Creatures as well. She hasn't beaten Nightmare Creatures yet, but she is about halfway through and having a great time with it. That was all the misses played up until Sunday morning, when I was feeling a little down so she suggested we play some games together to cheer me up; and sure enough it worked like a charm. We ended up playing through the original Sonic the Hedgehog on the Sega Genesis, trading off the controller between zones, and managed to beat it with all 6 chaos emeralds collected to boot. As far as video game comfort food goes there's few games that never fail to cheer me up quite like the Sonic games on the Genesis. Sonic 1, 2, 3, Sonic & Knuckles, 3D Blast, and even Sonic Spinball and Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine. They all give me the warm fuzzies every time I play them. After we finished playing through Sonic the spousal unit decided to spend a few more hours with the Genesis, playing Golden Axe three times but never quite managing to finish it. I can't blame her though, it's a darn tough game and I've never been able to beat it either. She was able to make it to the final boss, Death Bringer, every time but always ended up getting all her lives and continues drained in short order thanks to the last boss's unblockable magic attacks and invincible skeletons. She still had a great time playing it though and said that even if she never beats it Golden Axe is still fun to play. Looking ahead to next week I'm not too sure what I'll be playing. When the replacement disc drive for my Wii shows up in the mail I'd definitely like to get back to the Wii games that I was in the middle of playing last week when the disc drive died, but until then I might root through the misses' PlayStation library a little more to find something spooky to play. She does have almost every horror game on the system so there shouldn't be any shortage of options, and on that note I know she does plan to continue playing Nightmare Creatures next week and possibly get back to Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare after that. I think that about wraps it up for this week! So until next time, and as always, best wishes and happy gaming to you and yours.

  23. I am slightly confused, wasn't your previous score higher? I think our moderator got a little confused too, as you're now listed twice on the high score list for the round.
