  1. Not long ago I put up a market research thread to see what the going rate for an Atari 800XL computer was and the general consensus seemed to be around $60 + shipping for a good condition computer with power supply, so I'm hoping that by offering $100 + shipping I can get my hands on a really pristine like-new condition computer with power supply. I don't need the original box, although instruction manuals would be nice to have since this will be my first classic computer. I wouldn't mind getting a few common cartridges as well, though I do plan to buy a SIO2SD from Lotharek as soon as I've gotten myself a computer so getting software for it isn't too high of a priority. I would be fine with paying a little extra if it came with a composite video cable, but it's just fine if there's no video cable included since I can always buy one separately on eBay. Thanks for taking the time to view my ad and if you do happen to have a really minty fresh looking Atari 800XL that you'd be interested in selling then just let me know.
  2. By the power of Grayskull this game pisses me off! ...And yet for some reason I still kinda like it. Masters of the Universe: The Power of He-Man (A/A Difficulty, B&W Mode, Default Settings): 12,200
  3. Getting on to the games for this round, I have never played He-Man before and have only briefly played Popeye for a few minutes once or twice, but Smurf was one of my favorite games as a kid so I figured I'd start with that one. I spent about an hour practicing it tonight and actually managed to set a new personal best high score in the process. Smurf: Rescue in Gargamel's Castle (B/B Difficulty, Default Settings): 63,400
  4. Might as well go for the bonus right away. Favorite Cartoon - My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic There's a dozen different reasons why I like this show (the first 4 seasons at least), from the heartwarming stories to the witty dialog and overarching theme of how to be a good person and treat others well. But at the end of the day I think it really just comes down to the fact that I am very fond of the main character, Twilight Sparkle.
  5. I know I want to get my first classic computer in the near future but I just can't seem to make up my mind whether to go with an Atari 800XL or TI-99/4A. Any thoughts?

I think you should go Atari first, and then get EVERYTHING else next.

The XEGS is cool and underrated. I like the benefits of the external keyboard, too.

Once you get an 800XL, as 'sexy' as it might be, you are gonna have a great time tearing it apart and fixing the keyboard while it keeps it's nice office-yellow sheen and tobacco stain. An XEGS reminds women of Easter (when they used to wear nothing but a bonnet),has a great keyboard, GRAY STUFF, built in BASIC,uses old peripherals (NOT JUST CARTS), and is widely like-new condition. Wait till you feel the mushyness of some of these old built in keyboards...

@Jin: I don't know how common the C64 is in the US, but on this side of the pond it is 10 times more common than any Atari or TI-99. Also there is about a half dozen homebrew games released every week, and plenty of inexpensive SD options. But yes, the C64 scene is not known for being newbie friendly and the old breadbox 64's often break their PLA chips (and that units stored in moist garages break anyway). Your observations may be correct, just that I don't agree with most of them.

  6. I'm feeling pretty lousy today so I'll be waiting until tomorrow to do the usual picture and write up for the week, but for now here's my household's play times for the past week: Ineligible Scooby-Doo! Night of 100 Frights (GameCube) - 109 minutes Arcade Defender (played on Midway Arcade Treasures for GameCube) - 9 minutes Ms. Pac-Man (played on Namco Museum 50th Anniversary for GameCube) - 57 minutes Robotron 2084 (played on Midway Arcade Treasures for GameCube) - 23 minutes Xevious (played on Namco Museum 50th Anniversary for GameCube) - 42 minutes Atari 2600 Encounter at L-5 - 111 minutes Super Breakout - 54 minutes Atari 7800 Centipede - 257 minutes Double Dragon (emulated on Nintendo Wii) - 7 minutes Ms. Pac-Man - 452 minutes Xevious - 42 minutes Game Boy Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins - 38 minutes Tetris - 20 minutes PlayStation Resident Evil: Director's Cut - 361 minutes Tomb Raider - 47 minutes Total Play Time This Week 1,596 minutes (26 hours 36 minutes) [1,487 minutes eligible] Individual System Play Times This Week Atari 7800: 758 minutes PlayStation: 408 minutes Atari 2600: 165 minutes GameCube: 109 minutes Arcade: 98 minutes Game Boy: 58 minutes

  8. Just what I always wanted, my own little Centipede. I will name him George and I will hug him, and pet him, and squeeze him. http://i.imgur.com/X1gMWMO.jpg

This centipede only has six legs. Does that make it a sexipede?

Depends on whether or not you're into bugs I suppose. I think he's a very pretty little multi-segmented crawler, though I wouldn't want to hop in bed with him.

While it is no centipede, I found this little friend on one of my balcony plants 10 years ago:

  9. Alright, I bit. As a big fan of Centipede I think it was worth every penny of the $9.64 shipped that I paid for it on eBay. A really lovely figure with lots of detail, and an overall size, weight, paint job, and finish quality relatively on par with Nintendo's Amiibo series. I don't plan on buying any of the other Funko retro figures, but this one is certainly a lovely addition to my modest collection of Centipede memorabilia.
  10. I've purchased quite a few things on eBay for a buck or two from China with free shipping and always had good experiences. No idea how the sellers make money on things that cheap, but I always received the items I ordered in the mail 3 or 4 weeks later and never had any problems with them. I do stick to one simple rule of thumb when buying from China though: No electronic components. I've bought lots of simple little things like plastic battery cases, cartridges cases, metal thread adapters, screwdrivers, security bits and so on from China and they've all been just fine, but I've seen more than enough people get ripped off on shoddily made SD cards, rechargable batteries, and things like that to know to avoid buying anything with a circuit in it from China. Stick with simple mechanical goods and nothing electronic and you should have no troubles with inexpensive Chinese products.
  11. That makes sense I suppose. Curt certainly gets an A for effort, and I know how badly medical circumstances can derail life's plans (I've been in the ER with life threatening conditions half a dozen times in as many months as well), but I still can't help but feel sorry for everyone who backed this project and never got anything for their money. One way or another those people do deserve a refund at this point.
  12. After reading through roughly half this thread I'm honestly a little baffled why everyone and sundry on AtariAge tore Mike Kennedy a new hole over the Coleco Chameleon when everyone who backed his project got their money back, and yet no one seems terribly upset about Curt Vendel walking away with their money and never delivering the product promised. This has to be a screw up 10 times the magnitude of the Coleco Chameleon, since everyone who backed the 7800 XM lost three figures in funds that they're most likely never going to see again. Is Curt just that nice of a guy that he can get away with it and no one minds? It seems like this thread would be a 800 page firestorm if it was someone else like, say Mike Kennedy for the sake of argument, who made off with thousands of dollars then never delivered anything for it. Don't get me wrong, Curt's medical situation is very sad and as someone on permanent disability I have every sympathy for his health problems, but where's the accountability?

  14. Just for rules clarification, are we allowed to play on A/A difficulty? I've been playing on B/B difficulty with a CX-78 Europad and it would make the game a lot easier if I could drop bombs without taking my thumb off the fire button by playing on A/A.
  15. Kudos Flojo, that was an experience I have not had in nearly a decade.
  16. I never had a SNES growing up, and I've never owned one as an adult either, but I've been itching for a decent way to play the original Star Fox without laggy emulation for a long time now so I'd probably buy one if they included Star Fox. If they actually produce enough of them that I can find one this time that is.
  17. It boggles my mind in the best kind of way that the MS-DOS classic Jazz Jackrabbit received a completely unexpected reboot on the Game Boy Advance.

Why is the jackrabbit green? Is he some sort of Irish Leprechaun/jackrabbit hybrid?

Perhaps those games were considered good filler titles based on having some sort of name to them while not being expensive licenses and with a certain room for improvements and artistic freedom?

Besides, Game Boy conversions of PC games are just sad. (And yet Daikatana was better on the GBC, go figure)

  18. I decided to come back and take another crack at it after having breakfast and my morning coffee, and I think I improved my score a fair bit. One useful tip I learned while playing this time which isn't in the instruction manual is that once you reach the 5th level of difficulty at 3,200 points and above, letting a red death ship touch the ground becomes an instant game over no matter how many lives you have stockpiled. At that point in the game instead of disappearing and taking away 1 life when the death ship touches the ground the ship just bounces up and down on the ground draining all of your lives in about half a second, so once you cross the 3,200 point threshold you cannot let a death ship reach the ground or it's game over. Anyhoo... Encounter at L-5 (B/B Difficulty, Default Settings): 3,843
  19. I had never played this one before, but it's a neat game. Reminds me a lot of Astroblast. Encounter at L-5 (B/B Difficulty, Default Settings): 2,617
  20. Very cool! It looks like no small amount of inspiration for the comic was drawn from the more recent game Centipede: Infestation, which was actually a surprisingly good game. A lot like a cross between Centipede and Robotron 2084, and definitely a game that every Wii owner with a Classic Controller should have in their collection if they're a fan of Centipede.
  21. Warming up my paddle controllers for the next round of the Atari 2600 High Score Club. Super Breakout (Atari 2600, Game 5, B/B Difficulty): 2,844 https://youtu.be/hmVP7qhIHA8
  22. Starting this round off right with a new personal best Advanced difficulty high score. Xevious (Advanced): 154,270 Bonus: A Sonic the Hedgehog hat!
