Can anyone give some basic advice on purchasing a Apple II? system?
Grimakis replied to NoleOne's topic in Apple II Computers
It depends. For someone that is looking to just mess around with Apple II in general, and doesn't care about rarity/conductibility, I would recommend an IIe Platinum. They are the cheapest, relatively speaking, and very reliable. While I don't have a IIGS, it's a good option. It's just a bit removed from the original Apple II line. It's a tad more expensive. If you go for the //e Platinum, I would recommend getting one with the 5.25" Disk Controller, at least 1 drive. maybe 2, and a Super Serial Card. Color monitors are expensive, maybe try to find a Commodore 1084s. Personally the Monochrome Monitor II from Apple is nice, and cheaper. If you do local pickup from another collector, expect to pay $150-200. If you happen across it on Craigslist, you'll probably get the whole setup for $50. I wouldn't get a monitor shipped anywhere. -
For what it's worth, Modem.MGR is the best terminal package in my opinion. http://apple2.org.za/gswv/a2zine/Utils/MMGR_PDOS_DSK.zip

I'm not sure what UberGROM is but i thought the WiFi module(3.3v) was being connected directly via RS-232(also 3.3v). Feel free to ignore me.

Why do you need serial to TTL, if the board outputs 3.3V?
-
So basically this works as a Wi-Fi Modem that is controlled with Hayes commands? Please provide more info on what software you flashed to it. I would consider making one of these for my Tandy 102 Portable computer to use as a wireless laptop at Starbucks.

Well that will be easy, just get a serial cable

Retro computing - how-to series videos:

I started a small time tech/gaming channel which hasn't seen a lot of attention due to my lack of time. But definitelt I will be putting up some Apple IIe videos in the future. -
Not sure what to make of "mods" like these?
Grimakis replied to Keatah's topic in Apple II Computers
Even if the computer is dead, it can probably be saved. Shoving a Raspberry Pi into an old computer case is a tired "mod", usually requires no skill, and is fairly unimpressive. -
You aren't limited to AppleSoft. You can load machine language programs of audio cable. Check this website: http://asciiexpress.net/gameserver/

Text Sweeper - A Minesweeper Clone for the Model 100
Grimakis replied to Grimakis's topic in Tandy Computers
Albert gave me the ability to edit the initial post. I've updated the links to a page I created on my own site. In addition to the game now being even faster, I've added a title screen and the ability to set a custom number of mines in the minefield. It turns out that the Model 100 is really very suited for games like Minesweeper. I can only imagine how popular a Minesweeper port might have been amongst traveling businessmen back in the day. -
Do random numbers have you going in circles?
Grimakis replied to Iamgroot's topic in Apple II Computers
By random I mean random. Each value has an equal probability of being selected, and one outcome does not in any way affect the next. -

Grimakis replied to Iamgroot's topic in Apple II Computers
If you generate random number infinitely through, the distribution should be approximately uniform though, now? -

Why do you need this? I'm not familiar with RND in Applsoft, but if you have a clock card, perhaps you could read that for the number of seconds elapsed since midnight to be your new seed, periodically changing the seed whenever a key is pressed. Do you have a particular use case? -
Text Sweeper - A Minesweeper Clone for the Model 100
Grimakis replied to Grimakis's topic in Tandy Computers
Thanks for the idea. Most of my variables are declared as INTs anyway using the % sign, so I don't think it will make much of a difference. I've made some edits to the code to make it much faster, however I can't edit my initial post. I'll post the new version below. -
+1 for Ray. He is by all definitions of the phrase "the man". His PSUs are top notch, and I would definitely use those over any old one that may fail and lay waste to your machine.

Quite simply the II+ is rarer and hence more collectible. The original II is less capable than either, but of course it sells for more. A Raspberry Pi is more capable than any Apple II, therefore no Apple II should sell for more than $30. Now that we have established that the market determined price of an Apple II is not strictly defined by how capable it is, we can easily understand why II+s regularly sell for more than IIe. Not only on eBay, but on AppleFritter, Amibay, and other websites. The II+ is rarer, more collectible, and worth more in 2017.

Smart phone to a dial up modem ?
Grimakis replied to Jim Pez's topic in Classic Computing Discussion
It's most likely not going to work, due to the level of compression that is being used over cellular networks. One could try it with an acoustic coupler and a bluetooth headset of course. -
No there are a lot of issue with modems on VOIP. I have two VOIP services. One is Optimum Voice the other is Magic Jack. Optimum voice works rather reliably, whereas Magic Jack is very hit or miss with modems. The thing is that VOIP doesn't provide the same bandwidth as copper lines. Unlike a copper line which just sends the analog waves over the wire, VOIP samples it and digitized it. Not all VOIP is created equal. They are generally optimized for human speech, and they don't necessarily sample the frequencies out of that range. Also it is often compressed. Since the modem relies on specific timing, if the sample rate of the compression doesn't line up with the rate at which the data is being modulated, you're going to lose data. Trust me. I can dial out with magic jack just fine. I can make the connection, but the carrier signal can drop at any point. You may start seeing garbage characters. Higher speeds don't work. It just isn't the same.

Text Sweeper - A Minesweeper Clone for the Model 100
Grimakis replied to Grimakis's topic in Tandy Computers
Here's a screenshot running in Virtual T. -
Hi everyone, I was bored on Sunday night so I wrote a Minesweeper clone for the Model 100. it is called Text Sweeper. it's pretty barebones, but it works. It's written in BASIC. Please test it out, and if you find any bugs or issues, let me know. So far the only problem is that Calculating the Minefield is dreadfully slow. Controls: Spacebar - Check a cell. F - Flag as cell. Arrow Keys - Move Cursor Overview Page: http://www.georgerimakis.com/tsweep.html Direct Download: http://www.georgerimakis.com/files/tsweep/TextSweeper_2.0.zip

But at the same time, an 80-col display really was the standard for business use. I'm sure many people used these machines as business computers, however I sincerely doubt they were selected as such because they thought the features were better for business use. Most likely it was more cost effective, in that a proper business machine cost thousands of dollars, compared to only hundreds for a C64. The alternative would be pen and paper spreadsheets, and typewriters. Of course even the C64(essentially a toy of a computer), is still a computer, and can do calculations faster than someone with a pen and paper can do.

Pick my next computer! TI-99/4A or Tandy CoCo 3

Go for the Apple //e -
And as you know, I'm trying to decide which computer is worthy of sharing a desk with my Apple IIe with dual drives and a green phosphor monitor..

Pick my next computer! TI-99/4A or Tandy CoCo 3
Grimakis replied to Grimakis's topic in Classic Computing Discussion
Yes, I am familiar. I have a similar cable for my Commodore 64(although it supports Y/C out of that jack as well). Sounds like either computer will easily connect to my 1084-S monitor. I'm so indecisive. So far I like the aesthetics of the Ti-99/4a better, but most of the ones I see on eBay are scratched, dented and dinged. I do like computers that take cartridges, so the Ti thats another plus. However the Tandy does seem a bit more advanced. If I wanted RS-232 on either of these to connect to an external modem, what is required? How about terminal software?
