  1. Hi I've been collecting console games for years but when it comes to vintage computing I'm at a total loss. My first console was a SNES but before that my family would always get second hand computers with software. So I have a huge amount of unscratched nostalgia for these games of my early childhood. I stumbled across this Macintosh SE at a flea market this weekend and picked it up for $9. So now that I have it I've been doing a lot of research and am a lot better informed than before. So the Good: It looks like I am in the right vintage of computers. Looks like the games I'm interested in can be played on it. Oregon Trail, Super Solvers: Midnight Rescue, Prince of Persia. The Bad: Not even sure if it works at this point. I'm looking for a 800k boot disk to test it out. Keyboard and Mouse - Don't have these either, Not sure how hard it will be finding apple stuff without having to go to ebay. Only 800k drives - Looks like pretty much anything I'm looking for needs a 1.4mb drive. So I'd have to get an external hard drive with the games already on. Not sure if this is economical over getting something other then the SE. Also how do I know if these games are monochrome compatible? I read this somewhere. I've been looking up games on Macintosh Garden but the site seems to be down right now. Any information of advice is welcome!
  2. Last Flea Market of the year. Got the SNES jr and Mac from same vendor for $69. I have yet to test either. Board game was $10.
  3. Thanks, I appreciate it. I can't think of a great way to explain it but both overword pipes I have are actually 2 stacked directly on top of each other. Make sure you don't stack your pipes until after you send your Mario through. I literally stumbled across it by accident and then built my level around it. Good Luck, I'm interested in seeing what other people can do with the idea. So I made pipe 1o, it leads to 2u. I made 3u it leads to 4o. I made 5o it leads to 6u. I stack 4o on top of 5o. I create 7u it leads to 8o. I stack 1o on 8o. Easy as that lol. u is underworld, o is overworld. 9D76-0000-0085-D800 - Zelda IV, I haven't had anyone playtest this so hopefully it works as intended.
  4. I like the Boo's cottage one a lot. It has a nice intro where you walk up to the house and it has the multiple pipe entrances. I think there is a lot you could do with that same set up. The level might be a little long and the end P switch part a little too difficult for most people. The Alex kid one is a bit of a mess. I understood it and it looks like it took a ton of work but I'm not sure if there's a ton of fun factor there. The most important thing you can do to get stars is to have someone play-test your levels while you watch. See were they die and get stuck. It's amazing how differently someone who didn't create the level will play it. Don't be afraid to delete an uploaded level (you keep your stars) and rework it to make it better. Once you get a "hit" level it will just keep getting stars on its own while your others will just continue to sit there. On my good levels its about 1 of 5 people seem to star it. D70E-0000-007D-4ED4 - Pirate Ship Sneak Attack! 1B29-0000-0080-66C2 - Donut Drop, World 2! - I think this is my best level so far. My in-game name is Rudolf BTW
  5. I love the 101's. A Half Price Books near me had one for 34$ but the case was rough(pearl blue) so I didn't pick it up. Mabey if they still have it I'll pick it up for a Mod. Origonal Gameboy games are pretty cheep and look phenomenal on them, as well as region free.
  6. D3BB-0000-0049-1977 - Dinosaurs Attack! :Neat slight of hand I discovered by accident, I explain how its done in the comments if anyone's interested in using it. 1E2E-0000-0067-6EDB - The Great Sushi Escape! : You play as a squid escaping a kitchen. Comments/Suggestions welcome! Your Star at the beginning of walk on spikes is kinda hard to get. Lots of stuff on the screen I didn't even realize it was there the first few times. As a rule of thumb I always add some more ground at the beginning because what they give you isn't enough of a runway. - Hope this helps
  7. Go ahead and post your level ID's here so you can find and follow other forum users. Our discerning tastes as Retro Gamers should make us better designers then the average Joe, right? 7D61-0000-0022-3D34 - Short Old School Level 98CC-0000-003A-D651 - Massive Boat Level using up almost every asset
  8. I'll throw my 2 cents in and make a case for the modded 101 top loader. I installed my own av mod and it's pretty simple. The jail bars are removed by lifting a leg leading to the RF modulator. So you loose RF for no jail bars and AV. I really like the simulated stereo audio that is included wit most mods. Pretty much it just splits the sound channels coming through the system. Also super easy to install and you can put a resistor between them to mix the channels to your liking. Fantastic results. Clean your games once and never again. No matter how manny times I cleaned my system and games and rebuilt 72 pin connectors the toaster would not work first time a large percentage of the time. I've had in my possession over 20 units, referbished/new connectors/well taken care of and none have been even close to as reliable as my 101's. I haven't cleaned a NES game in 2 years I bet. Also the system has a much smaller footprint on your stand and famicom adaptors are easier to use/ gameshark.
  9. Writing down passwords is a thing of the past! Whip out your phone and take a picture, you'll never have another bad code. I replaced my gear on the turbo CD. Was a pretty big pain plus the tiny washer flung off never to be seen again. The next thing you'll want to do is region mod it so you can buy a Japanes 3.0 card. Lots of the CD games need it and the us ones are expensive.
  10. I'm going to say Gamecube/PS2 and earlier. I think video games have changed a lot durring the last fifteen years. I'd say ever since Call of Duty and the rise of indy games and the death of the 3rd party the market has changed enough so that GC/PS2 feel like a time gone by. I recently replayed through Eternal Darkness and absolutely consider it classic gaming. Retro on the other hand I equate with 8 bit and older. But I do also play modern games so I may have a different perspective. If you haven't really played anything newer then 1995 you're probably not going to see the changes.
  11. It might be blasphemy here but i'd have M.U.L.E and North Vs South around 5 and 6. I also love zelda II. Probably my #2
  12. N64 game Craigslist deal. Was too good to pass up even for $120 with 9 games to add to my collection and the rest are doubles. Looking through them at home I noticed Banjo has some stickers on the back "property of Nintendo" awesome its a NFR! I hit up some thrift stores on the way home and was on the phone with my Dad at Goodwill when I nearly missed this in a wicker basket waiting to be stocked on the shelf. Great day to be off of work.
  13. I had a real good time at the show. Definitely will have to go both days next year. There is way too much to see/sensory overload for one day. Seemed like vendors and exhibitors were packing up and ready to get out of there by the time noon rolled around Sunday. I thought the Odyssey display was nice and in a good spot for people to notice it. Liked the Steal Battalion room and the FM Towns Marty caught my attention. Unbelievable that there were open seats at the bar when the presentations were going on. Sitting there and watching the speakers was the highlight of the day for me. Only spent $5 in the Tent. I was looking for 3 uncommon but cheep snes games ($5-10) and literally couldn't find them at any table. Vendors either had good games they wanted top dollar for or Garbage for top dollar. Ebay here I come... (although my dad did pick up Alien Vs. Predator Jag for $15 which was a good deal). Tons of freebees at the Nintendo room for me and the nieces. I got a nice Xenoblade cardboard counter display from them.
  14. I'll be going on Sunday. Last year I spent a majority of my time in the vendor tent even though I think its more of a sellers market there and really didn't bring anything home. I plan to spend a lot more time in the museum putting some hands on time with some stuff I don't have. What I would love to see there is a CD-i with one of the Zelda games. Also I've heard a lot about the Castlevania and Metal Gear for the MSX, not sure what your planning on bringing Tempest but I'd like to check those out. Other then that I'm sure i'll be on my 3ds clearing out the Street Pass a lot of the time. *And my Dad is looking for a Jaguar CD so if anyone has a line on one let me know.
  15. *New Addition* This Space Invaders cabinet has been up in the family barn for 25 years and was in pretty bad shape. After a long time thinking about it I finally decided to go ahead with a MAME conversion. I kept the cabinets mirror, moon and background intact. It really is a striking image and optical illusion that pictures do not do justice to (The moon is a plastic half circle and behind the glass, florescent light behind that and the cardboard sky behind that). There is a switch in the coin door for turning the moon background on and off. I definitely have more I would like to do/re-do latter on but it's working out great for now with Bubble Bobble being played most often. I might make make a post in the Arcade section latter on if anyone is interested explaining setting up the LCD, Running MAME and GameEx Front-End mirrored, making a working Multi Cabinet with no Mouse/Keyboard, setting up IPac for controls. It was definitely a lot to figure out. Best thing is since most of it was completed from used parts I have less then $100 into it.
  16. Here is a video of a Bally Astrocade Space Invaders cart that I have that appears to be still in development. You can see the cartridge at the end of the video. It has a blank sticker label with "Space Invaders (demo)" typed on it. It's a little glitchy and buggy at this point, but as my first Proto find I definitely enjoy playing around with it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V3rWANP2aRg The Cartridge ROM has been dumped and I believe is available on Bally Alley.
  17. Why's that? No one's ever mentioned it being a hazard. And I'm sure my Father-in-law who has serviced it wouldn't miss the opportunity to lecture me I did have a water valve go out on the opposite end of the basement 2 months ago when the weather turned cold. Got my Commodore 64 and games, a dozen boxed Genesis games and some PS2 games including Ico and Shadow of the Colossus.
