So no wireless controller will work other than the 8bitdo? Even ones with enough buttons like the DualShock 3? I've only been able to pair the 8bitdo once, and it had horrible input lag. The DS3 paired via the Mac app and much better on the lag front. The Retro Receiver seems to work fine, but the 8bitdo controller itself is a real piece of junk. Also, do you press A+X to load the ROM or A+X after you get to the "Rewind Tape" screen?
As someone with a CS degree, I am ashamed to admit I've never touched a soldering iron. I've been meaning to get into more hands on electronics stuff, but I don't want to start with this. I'll probably just order some Raphnet adapters.
I'm not sure about other 3rd party controllers pairing with the retro receiver and if they will function correctly on the Anaglogue NT Mini. Try a few 3rd party controllers out and report back to the community. It would be interesting to know what other controllers might work. Keep in mind, the retro receiver that came with the Mini has custom firmware, so be sure that you are using that. You can get the custom firmware for the retro receiver on Analogue's website under the support page. It may have been updated, but I'm not sure. My point is you need the extra buttons to play A2600 Supercharger games, and also some Colecovision games. The release notes for each core contain relevant details. I have never had any lag issues with the included 8bitdo controller/retro receiver and don't mind using it. The answer to you last question: Load the Supercharger ROM you want to play. "Rewind Tape" and "Press Play" will be displayed on the screen. Press "X" and "A" at the same time and the game will load. This is assuming you have the proper bios files and good ROM dumps.

Has anybody been able to get Communist Mutants from Space on Atari 2600 to work? I just get a "Rewind Tape" screen. I'm using the ROM from the smokemonster pack which i checked and it identical to the available No-Intro ROM. The ROM is 8448 bytes, suggesting that it is a Supercharger game. The 2600 core release notes says this should automatically detect the correct mapper based on this filesize.

I actually can't seem to get any Supercharger games to load, just the same screen that says "Rewind Tape Press Play". I see in the release notes that for Supercharger games you load them by pressing A+X, which I couldn't do because I was using an OEM NES controller. I've had very bad luck pairing the 8bitdo controller to the retro receiver, so I paired a DualShock 3 to it without any problems. I tried pressing all combinations of the PS3 face buttons to replicate "A+X", still no luck.
The 8bitdo controller is required for Supercharger games because you will need the "X" button. Assuming you have the correct bios, you need to press "A" and "X" at the same time to load a Supercharger game. Have a read through the release notes in the A2600 folder. Kevtris put a lot of good info in it.

I like and have played Berzerk.... let's hope I can do WAY better.
Haha! Vocelli you sandbagger! It doesn't look like there is much hope with the first 2 Berzerk scores posted by the Dragon Slayers. Thats some good work. I probably won't be anywhere near those.

I never put any time into Berzerk. Played it seriously for about 20 minutes and I can already tell this is going to be infuriating. The spawning is so random. I'll spend some more time with it tonight and post a score or 2.

I played another game just after I posted my score 223,300. I wasn't expecting to do better. I edited my previous post and updated the pic. My current score is now 232,800. I wasn't expecting the scores on the front page to be updated so fast. KaeruYojimbo, you are Johnny On The Spot with updates. Thanks!

Discovered the Super Mario All Stars (which is also MMC5 like Legend of Link) rom hack also doesn't save/load correctly on the NT Mini.
There is an updated patch at Romhacking. There are 2 patches in the zip file. Use the patch designated for "cartridge". That hack never saved/worked correctly until this recent update.

I'll try not to be a late Sunday score poster again. I've never played the 2600 version of Joust before. Here is what I did with it during my first short play session. I like the control and although limited, this 2600 version captures the feel of the arcade. What I really don't like is the eggs. After you kill a bird, the eggs keep floating and picking up momentum. It should be the opposite. The eggs should slow down and land. I'm guessing it is a technical limitation of the 2600. Nonetheless, it is fun and I should be posting a few more scores throughout the week.

I had a quick question about the 5x height option. I am playing Metroid and if I choose the 5x height it seems like it's cutting off way too much of the top and bottom. I'm running it on a Dell monitor. I'm just not sure if I'm missing something I'm supposed to do when selecting 5x. Like it's cutting off the entire top and bottom row of blocks at the first screen after pressing start. Or maybe I just don't know how much I'm supposed to be seeing of the game?
I'm assuming you are playing on a widescreen. I use 5x height and 6x width. I make adjustments on a game by game basis. 720p is a perfect integer scale and doesn't require adjustments. You can also set height to 4x; width to 6x and set aspect ratio to 4:3 on your tv or monitor. All 3 of those settings don't have shimmering when the game scrolls. I can't take credit for figuring that out, as My Life in Gaming put that information out during their review of the NT Mini.

I've been getting better at Keystone Kapers. Hovering around 35,000. I know its weak sauce around here, but I have some periodic free time this weekend to practice and get better. Gotta take a break now so my eyes don't start bleeding.

I remember playing Keystone Kapers as a kid in the 80's. I never put much time into it. I think it is a lot of fun so far. The control seems pretty good too. When I die, I know it is my fault. Now I just need to get the higher level patterns down!

I just wanted to post about an update to a great NES hack that is now fully functional on the NT Mini. It is the Super Mario All-Stars hack by Infidelity. You need to apply the "crt" or cartridge .ips patch to Super Mario Bros. 3 (U) (PRG1) [!].nes. The hack now contains Super Mario Bros (US), Super Mario Bros 2 (Jap) Super Mario Bros 2 (US), and Super Mario Bros 3. The game save function works now. The patch can be found at romhacking dot net. Check out the readme file for more info. Now if they could just get Zelda The Legend of Link to save on the NT Mini.....

Kevtris never mentioned that he replicated the special SNES chips (e.g. SA-1, Super FX) in the FPGA. To be able to play off the original carts directly he wouldn't have to do that anyway. You would only need replication of said special chips if trying to play from the ROM files themselves a la an SD card. It would be nice however if he has made some progress in replicating them though, since I believe that was his intention with the Zimba 3000.
Also, the various special chips on SNES cartridges use proprietary bios files. Those files aren't going to come baked in the Super NT code or with any jailbreak firmware. I know those bios files are necessary to play those games on the SD2SNES flash cart.

Just wondering how we would make what we buy "our own"? Who would program these?
Part of my previous point. The NT Mini and the Super NT are open source for anybody to do what they want with them. Right now, there is only one person who knows how to program them.

Also everyone has been calling Kev an employee of Analogue, but it still could just be long term contract work and misinterpretation on the part of the article writers. Kev has been calling this contract work for he last year after all.
Fair point, but a hair split. He still had to sign a contract with clauses to work for them.

I seriously doubt that. I would absolutely despise analogue if they tried to release a fpga genesis or something now with exactly the same internals as the super nt and wouldn't allow a jailbreak for it. Everything they have said makes it sound like they are completely in favor of people doing whatever they want with the console. My best guess at their business strategy is that they simply plan to continue using more powerful fpgas in their consoles to cover more generations that the previous one could not so at no point would anything released on the jailbroken firmware cannibalize their own business.
Releasing 3 different consoles with switched up cases and identical internals after you buy the soul of the hero of the people is a surefire way to let the butthurt rain down on you like only internet rage can provide.
It is interesting to wonder how Kevtris' contract is worded because it should say that they own anything he does which would mean they would have to give him permission to work on the jailbroken firmware for him to release it which means that if anyone came after them for it they could be found responsible. Maybe it says something along the lines of him being allowed to work on anything he wants on his own time as long as he does not sell it?
I reallllly hope they have this option.
Wolf, My point is this: Analogue probably has plans to release other retro clone systems (Genesis, TG16, Neo Geo, etc) in the future, like in a year or several years. And for money since they are a business. If they do, there is no way they are going to let their super star employee release certain cores for free if it is a conflict of interest. Straight business 101. Even if Kevtris wanted to make those cores, why would he program them for free considering it takes many months to develop just one of them? Kevtris deserves to and will get paid for core development that takes so much time. From a business perspective with some logic and reason applied, it makes no sense that 16-bit cores are coming for free in a jailbreak firmware for the Super NT. I just don't believe we will see cores for other 16-bit systems on the Super NT. Analogue will be releasing other 16-bit systems as separate and new products in the future. Yes the Super NT is open source, so anyone can hack it and make cores for it. I don't think Analogue would make a system and lock it down. But how many people actually know how to hack and program the FPGAs in the NT Mini and the Super NT? I say one person. The guy who designed and programmed it. He is employed by Analogue and unfortunately I believe he is restricted by contract from releasing certain firmware for free.

This is complete speculation on my part, but here is my 2 cents about jailbreaking and cores. Analogue is a company that is in business to make money. They have a long term business plan, and Kevtris appears to be a part of that now. They have recently released NES clone consoles and are now onto the SNES. So what is next? I would think separate clone systems for the Sega Genesis, TurboGrafx-16, Neo Geo, etc. They just hired Kevtris full time and I don't think they will allow him to release cores for systems that would conflict with future product lines and business plans. As a full time employee, I am sure Kevtris signed a contract containing clauses, and likely a no compete clause if he leaves. If the Super NT is going to get any cores, they will be ones that do not interfere with Analogue's business model (Like the ones released on the NT Mini). I'd even be willing to bet that we don't see a NES core on the Super NT. Analogue is still trying to sell the NT Mini, so there is no reason they would allow or release a NES core. However, that could happen if or when the NT Mini is discontinued.
If nothing else, I would be more than happy with Super NT jailbreak firmware that simply allows SNES roms to be played from a SD card. I wouldn't get your hopes up for jailbreak firmware with a bunch of cores that haven't been developed yet and are part of Analogue's future business plans. Especially at the price point for the Super NT.

I'm just curious if you have tried an adapted SNES controller with A2600 Supercharger or Colecovision games? If it works I will consider picking up a few adapters.
