  1. How did games like Earthworm Jim, Mortal Kombat (I, II, III, Ultimate), Final Fight, Sunset RIders, NBA Jam, and SOOOOO many other games come out for other systems. I understand that EA had trouble for ripping the security and porting several 16-bit 68000 home computer games (although many of the Genesis versions were arguably better) and this was frowned upon (When SEGA wants you to buy Hang On and someone offers you Road Rash instead, or a flight simulator instead of After Burner II) and legal issues were raised. I was under the impression that the battle over the Nes10 chip between Nintendo and Tengen set the field that ended up siding with EA!?! Was it that SEGA wouldn't let their own titles be ported out, such as Altered Beast, After Burner II, Hang On, Golden Axe, Thunder Blade, etc.? I understand that they wouldn't allow that, but if I am to believe, from what you said, that SEGA didn't allow games licensed for the Genesis to be ported, well, it happened!! It happened in droves. PC games were ported to the Genesis (Earthworm Jim, Blackthorne, and a handful of others). Games were made for SEGA that came out for the SNES a tad later. It would appear that very few companies listened if that was the case. I'm not saying I don't believe you, it just seems like 16-bit exclusivity for games outside of the realm of the parent companies and their regulars (Square on the side of Nintendo, for instance) was somewhat shaky.
  2. This reminds me of how Atari put so many games in so little chip memory! When comparing all these games we may want to consider that when Nintendo did it in 48K Atari may have done it in 16K and so on...
  3. It's hard for me not to agree that the strong-arming may have saved the game industry through the eighties! Imagine if they didn't force exclusivity!? Perhaps there would have been a higher res, higher color, better playing version of every other game ('cept those shiny Nintendo only games) for the Master System, or even a CAPCOM system or a KONAMI system, or *shudder*, a ton of systems that dwindle what would become the NES juggernaut library! It's quite an interesting what if. It makes me happy that the Sega Genesis came along!

    You mean de-insect it!
  5. I too was cornfused by the lack of co-op play in NES Double Dragon. They added to that confusion with the VS mode that tried to be like a Street Fighter game and got played very little. I didn't really like that you had to unlock moves as the game progressed (gather hearts and what not), but at least the moves were there! The game was fun, but they effectively removed the 'double' from Double Dragon. I'm pretty sure that Jimmy was always the Shadow Boss, though. In the two player games you have to face each other at the end to see who wins the tang. I personally believe that the 7800 (with some on-cart sound upgrades and better controllers) has the potential to be better than the NES as titles are being introduced. I don't think it was any real competition to the NES in it's time, though. I got a 7800 for my birthday when they were fifty bucks at Odd Lots and was very pleased with Double Dragon, Pole Position II, Joust (Bird A$$), Karateka, Dark Chambers, Ikari Warriors, and that it played my dusty old VCS titles. If only they would have made some RPG's or more games like Midnight Mutants!
  6. One thing Nintendo did that was smart was distance themselves from the Atari design to appear enough like something new at least long enough to hook new gamers. The carts had to insert like a VCR (although that was also part of the reason that people began to blow into cartridges constantly and complain about games refusing to load and what not). They made the games really long and big although the boards inside were small enough to fit in much more compact frames. They had controllers that were fresh and new for folks to blister up their thumbs with. On the downside they made everyone who wanted to publish through them sign an exclusivity clause that would force them to make games for the NES only for a period of time! Nintendo was fresh and people needed that, sure. By the time these graphically superior arcade ports surfaced, though, I'm sure the majority of gamers were more excited for the newer style of games that were side scrolling adventures, top down RPG's, puzzle games, etc. I do feel like a great deal of respect should be shown for Atari as that is the name on the forum and the majority of the games in the store connected to the forum are Atari. It's great that multiple platforms are open for discussion here as well. I had a lot of fun playing Nintendo when it first came out, even though much of what I played initially was through rentals as my parents saw it as the next fad to likely fade rapidly. If the NES was a top loader to begin with and had carts that were short and square like Atari, they probably would have turned a nose up to it from the get go. Now we look at those arcade ports with better graphics and play them up and find them brag-worthy. When I was a kid the last thing I wanted was another Pacman, Dig Dug, Donkey Kong, or Galaga for another system. I was busy with Pro Wrestling, Batman, Castlevania, and Final Fantasy. Now we need to make more immersive adventure games, RPG's, and top down shooters for the 2600, 7800, 5200, etc...
  7. Well, there's always the 2600! Welcome home. It's a great idea whatever system you choose.
  8. I would certainly think so. I don't think there is any difference between the systems or controllers other than the label. I really like the Gemini sticks as they have excellent motion and built in paddles. I cleaned mine (just a board with contacts) and the inside is very simple. Based on what I've seen they appear to be identical in every way.
  9. They had to strike awhile back so they could smoke in the little delivery trucks (now all my kids birthday cards and magazines smell like Marlboro), so they're probably just getting ready to strike for something new to do in the trucks like shoot up, smoke prescription marijuana, sniff glue, lick a hundred stamps, eat packing peanuts, watch TV, light farts for YouTube, give stray animal ride-alongs, twirl a propeller cap, text while video conferencing and knee steering, stop and get out to high five other delivery people whenever crossing paths, carry machine guns...You know, just basic necessities that all couriers need!
  10. I bet that was a cool way to play Tomb Raider!
  11. I have them both (The RetroPort and the RetroGen). One real issue is with the television you use. If it's an HDTV you won't find too many issues and the emulation isn't bad. On a couple of my CRT's the screen decides to scrunch and occasionally roll when a lot of white is onscreen. The Konami startups will roll the screen. Flashes in games that fill a quarter of the screen with white will scrunch the picture or bring out a couple of rolls. I found it annoying as I prefer CRT displays to HD for a myriad of reasons. Like what was said before they really just use the power and controls from the SNES and then use a chip emulator on the cart adapter. They even have their own AV outs that go outside the system so you need multitaps, extra AV-in ports, or to rip out the SNES AV and plug in the adaptor whenever you want to use it. It's an inexpensive way to play extra stuff on your SNES. If you have a Super Gameboy and each of these Retro adapters you can turn an SNES into four different systems at once with relatively good emulation. Beware the screen rolling issue though.
  12. I like the Ms. Pacman for the 7800 best because the idea with makeup is that you apply it so you can't tell that you're wearing it.
  13. Or zoom the sprite once. This would make it look like it did when it was two pixels wide.
  14. This all depends on perspective in my opinion. I find that if you focus on controllers then certain systems always stand out to me. The Jaguar is a great system in my opinion, but the controllers are totally retardulous. I liked the NES controllers after my hands realized they weren't Atari sticks, but having spent a lot of time on arcade games in my youth I was very disappointed at the horrible conversions and sheer number of crap games dumped on us from Nintendo. Double Dragon, Bad Dudes, Contra, Smash TV, etc. were okay after the initial realization that they were reworks of the theme within the game, or flicker-fest crap-graphics ports, but far from what I would consider a conversion. I loved the Colecovision for its graphics, but the controllers SUCK! Many game systems had horrible controllers that made the systems suck. The 3DO had daisy chained pads that ranged from stiff and wonky to floaty and acceptably precise. I could just see some kid playing a game and yanking the controller out of their buddies hands in mid game. It's hard for me to choose a 'worst' because I think there are at least a handful of 'fun' games for most systems. I had the original, pea-green, headache inducer that was the Game Boy. Tetris draws you in and Super Mario Land induces the hurl. I wanted to like the Game.Com and bought it right when they first came out. I wasn't truly happy with anything for it until getting the lit-screen compact version much later. I really enjoyed Resident Evil 2 for the Tiger Game.Com. The Wonderswan was far superior to both, although, like many awesome things, it was stuck in Japan. I would say that the worst game system of ALL TIME goes to the XBOX 360! *SHOCK* It's not that it didn't have a lot of fun games or halfway decent controllers. It could go online, update games, download stuff, play Netflix, and even play original XBOX games! I think it's the worst ever because EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM until major changes were made to the mainboard ARE guaranteed to RROD no matter what! That SUCKS worse than ANYTHING! The original design called for a case that would breathe the scaler chip and allow the system to cool itself to only the heat of, say, the planet Venus. At the last minute some tard changed the case to plastic (insulator) which trapped heat and made the system a roaring inferno of star-like magnitude, causing it to unseat it's own freaking chips and die. I've X-Clamp modded them, IXtreme firmwared them, hacked games and done whatever I could and EVERY SINGLE original style 360 I've every owned RRODed! Granted I own a modded slim model now that is great, but they screwed the customer initially and that infuriated me more than any other system ever has!!
  15. I've lost/thrown away most of the above stated (and then repurchased in throes of mad overkill after 'growing up') , but one thing rings out to me in my memories... MY G1 MEGATRON! (yes, I know we didn't call them G1 back then.) I had a previously owned one without the scope or extras but I played with it a lot and knew how to transform it perfectly. One fine day at the grove (run down park behind the projects where I lived for a short time with wieners and twats carved into or drawn on everything) I was playing with Megatron while my brother was begging to 'hold' him. If anyone has siblings they know that when one asks to 'hold' your toy it usually means 'DESTROY'. This case was no different. I said "Maybe later!" to which he answered by ripping it out of my hand craftily and then hurling it into the air. I'm sure he wasn't aiming for anything in particular but, wouldn't you know it, my transformer landed in a giant oil-drum-trash-can filled to the top with water from a recent rain. I reached into the water as far as I dared but didn't feel anything. I tried to tip the drum but wasn't strong enough. He also got in trouble once and, for whatever reason, opened my door, grabbed my Night Rider KIT model that one of our babysitters brothers glued together for me one night, and SPIKED IT LIKE A FREAKING TOUCHDOWN onto our hardwood floor, TOTALLY DESTROYING IT!! I've also had many prized possessions 'confiscated'. This is a method of attaining goods without having to pay for them that my old family (whom I shall disown one glorious day) has mastered, whereby, if you ever need their help in any way, they relieve you of all you own as payment (comics, toys, game systems, whatever!). That happened at least once. Thanks for helping me peel back those never-properly-healed wounds! I will now go shudder in a corner until my wife feeds me beer...
  16. Cool Pitfall clone! I like the bad guys and the level art is excellent. Nice use of DPC+ so far! The new character graphics are a nice addition, too.
  17. You should change it to a 64K game and call it "Super Mario 64k". That would be extra dope.
  18. I like this demo. Like Albert said, I like the ship and I think the scrolling and design has promise. DPC+ seems well suited for this type of game what with it's complete lack of side-scrolling capabilities. There needs to be more games like this to take advantage of DPC+. I am a big fan of M.U.S.H.A and other games like it (it's arguably in the top five best Sega games) and I see how this could be much like it. Keep up the good work!

    Street Fight World

Okay..an update and download! I've been slowly working on several projects at once, injured myself moving, and am finding very little time to devote to much of anything what with the old lady working and doing college at the same time and me having to watch two munchkins all day. The game is coming along though and will likely be done before spring. This is my latest stable BIN to play around with. Two-player mode starts with the second player fire button. All jitters have been removed so it plays great on all televisions. A watcher on YouTube mentioned changing the backgrounds to something more simple (I assume the minor changes in outline colors while jumping or moving may have bothered them). Does anyone here agree that the backgrounds should be simplified ("like Kung Fu" was mentioned in the YT comments). I think they look great and really don't see any reason to change them. Enough ideas to go the other way with them may convince me otherwise. Edge (Ken clone) has his minor color problem fixed (a white line). Borets has more moves (a jump kick, sweep, and adjusted timing). Lotus (Chun-Li clone) has had one of her moves removed to allow for different controls to be set up later. Enjoy!! SFW2016.bin
  21. Hoping the Holy Claustrum gives me presence this year...

  22. Gyruss, Rampage (I totally disagree with the reviews), Spy Hunter, most Activision titles, Stargate, Star Trek SOS is excellent, Solaris, Ghostbusters is totally fun (I hated how some versions made the driving too ridiculous, but this one is just right).

I finally got all the jitters out of this game. Borets has moves now and there is one music track. I'm still working at AI but will upload the pre-AI latest work very soon. I intend to have a music track for each background and possibly retain what's in it now as the title/player select track.
