  1. I voted yes AND poked myself in the eye (and then my wife) with at least one banana!

  3. I find that the biggest benefit of Batari BASIC is that it cuts down on the time it takes to make a game. A bit of story-boarding, a concept of play mechanics, goals, presentation should be fleshed out before hand regardless of the chosen method of programming. Consider Princess Rescue. If Batari BASIC is used in the way that I see that it should (outside of the ease of experimentation with BASIC for learning purposes, of course) then the concept must have been faster to come to fruition because of the ease of use found in this form of BASIC. ASM might have taken longer to work with. The sprite editing tools are fast and easy. The visual environment and manual are quick and help considerably. A programmers lack of the proper setting up of a game before programming must contribute to the lackluster nature of many titles. I think that the use of single color sprites may have more to do with the misconception of the nature of an Atari game in general. Some might feel that because a vast majority of titles for the system are single color sprite games that it has that limitation and they approach game creation from that limited angle. When I programmed Titan Axe I did so with the goal of using as much color without flicker as possible with the standard kernel, while also having more than one color for everything. On the note of crappy games. We live in a time when people sit around playing math games or flappy bird clones just for fun. There is a flood of low caliber games coming from all directions and for all systems. Where a game would have to have had more of a long playing adventure or hero theme, the games that are often played today are like Balloon Tower Defense, Flappy Bird, 4096, etc. Games that I cannot be interested in. I come from Atari, Sega, Nintendo in their original forms. I expect replay, heroes, adventures and colorful pixel graphics in my games. Some apparently want simple thinking games like what is found on smart phones and free internet game sites. (I actually like Flappy Bird for the Atari (I can tolerate it). My wife is awesome at 4096 (too much of a math test for me). Aaaand..my kids are totally addicted to Balloon Tower Defense (my point exactly...). There are some exceptions, I guess. )
  4. I voted Nintendo, although I would consider their next system (supposedly a cloud only tablet style smartphone-like device) to be an official departure from consoles already. I really love the Wii for it's broad selection of games and backwards compatibility (although I always considered it a suped up, repackaged Gamecube from the start), but had no interest at all in the Wii U. I still haven't bought a PS3, PS4, or XBOX One. I did just recently get an XBox 360 Slim with LT 3.0. I went through quite a few of those back when hacking and modding them was the craze. After so many X-clamp mods, iXtreme firmware updates, and eventual RROD's regardless of all the work, I lost interest. I recently found the software to be inexpensive enough and the claims of no breakdowns for the 'S' systems and beyond, to find it approachable again. It's been a lot of fun. I still play my N64, NES, and SNES quite a lot (Rogue Squadron is still as fun as it ever was). I hope the best for Nintendo, but fear the worst for a cloud-only tablet of any kind.

    Street Fight World

I've been working on it steadily. The Ryu and Ken clones have different jump kicks now and the Zangief and Blanka clones now have most of their attacks. I dropped one background to free up a bit of graphics memory (Brazil). Next I'll be working on flips, falling, and hit animations. Lastly I will add the A.I., hit bars, and sound/music. I'm very busy lately with my baby son and my toddle-monkey daughter. I have to organize all of my spare time after my wife gets home and she and my other kids have settled anything that needs my attention. I try to have a say in everything, although school nowadays is pretty demanding and I feel like I don't get to see my older kids as much as I would like. Also, tomorrow is Nic's one year birthday! He's such a great baby. He love's to sit and watch movies with me and he's growing up so fast. I've been testing Street Fight World : The Pixel Warrior (new tentative title) out on many different screens. On HD and basic CRT televisions the game is clean and jitter-free. On certain CRT's (progressive scan it would seem) it has an occasional jitter which I am also working out. I have considered dropping either the Blanka clone or the Zangief clone in favor of another female character. Possibly a Cammy copy would be nice. I think she would remind folks of Super Street Fighter II, whereas the clone Sakura hints at the Alpha series. By losing the Zangief clone I could possibly (with his replacement being significantly shorter and thus less memory intensive) bring back the lost background. I'll probably keep things the way they are, though. I think that there needs to be a new DPC+ kernel that uses more ARM memory for graphics. This would really open up some opportunities to program much better games for the VCS/2600. A Zelda clone here, a Ninja Gaiden or Castlevania copy there. All with more badguys and better overall graphics would raise eyebrows for the old system. I'll post more pictures and possibly a couple more downloads before the finishing touches are added.
  7. You could try a Wico Y cable and joystick. This would override your stick and buttons in favor of the Wico (BETTER!) and let you use the pause button, number pad, etc. as needed. They run about thirty bucks on FleaBay.
  8. I'm sure many people cringe at the thought of doing anything but pet and gently lift the switches on their prized forty-year-old VCS heavy sixer! Although painting, dying, or otherwise modding something less popular, valuable, or worship-able, such as the Rainbow JR., a Vader 4-switcher, or basic old 4-switcher (not mine, it's from Sunnyvale thank you very much!!), might be something worth doing!! Here are some examples... (from the endless vacuum of suckage): ..and ,of course, other systems could try to look cool, like the Atari! Or just be tricked out altogether! ...okay, that last one is subject to opinion.
  9. LOVE IT! I love games with girl hero's that battle hybrid root food!! Great work!
  10. I've noticed that progressive scan CRT televisions don't do too great with some of my games. Check to see if you have the Red, Blue and Green component connections for more modern systems on your TV. I have two sets that have this and neither does well with my Atari games. My HD's do fine, as do my non-component TV's.
  11. My wife's friend just got her TV stolen during the day! I wonder if it is connected to the growing problem with heroin addiction in my city. If I had an extra Jag I would hook ya up in a jiffy! People can certainly SUCK! I wonder who was snooping around a chicken coop looking for electronics!?! This reminds me of a friend I had who was pi$$ed about his Playstation 2 being stolen. I asked if he kept his door locked and he informed me that he kept it with a bunch of other stuff in the trashcan in his front yard!?! I can't imagine anyone looking for electronics in a trashcan, but I also think that if it's in someones trash it may be considered fair game. I would usually think that items on the side of the road or in dumpsters are more likely prizes for dumpster divers, but still, if it's in the trash, don't be surprised if a trash picker takes off with it. A chicken coop is a new one, though. I hate trespassers. Maybe they were hunting for food or something and thought they hit the jackpot! I would post up some sketches of a fox or possible a ferret (just kidding). Sad indeed.

  15. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! No backup?
  16. Atari-anal-star I get it.. Like the movie in "The Big Lebowski" where he 'fixes' the 'cable' called "Logjammin'" "I am expert." Also, welcome to the group of owners of 7800's! I've had three or four in the past and am happy with the one I have now. The odd power supply connector, VCS/2600 sound, weird controllers, and limited library of titles often shoo away people from it. Backwards compatibility, sweet design, and the fact that many of the games are arguably better than, or at least on the level with, the NES continues to draw folks in. I got my first as a birthday gift from my psychotic mother back when they were $50 at Odd Lots (and she was a tad less crazy). My brother and I absolutely adored Double Dragon and played it a LOT! It was held back for release (a mistake in my opinion) for a couple of years and didn't really make a great imprint on the market in spite of it's capabilities. Homebrewers are showing off it's high color and resolution with increasingly more awesome titles like... The WIP Bullet Festival... ...and the remakes of old classics like.. Beefdrop (BurgerTime)... ...and Pacman Plus... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8QDBPeOd4Ag Unreleased titles from back in the day like... Sirus ...and Plutos And superior titles when compared to many other systems like... Donkey Kong Ms. Pacman Galaga Joust ...and MUCH MORE! It's a wise choice! (plus you can get my game about to be released...Titan Axe!!) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5GUQmKNar_A
  17. That blows ropey goat chunks now doesn't it! Will the current list of games ported (sheesh, I had no idea it was that many!) still be available for download? I've been too busy to keep track of all of this so I was a little shocked when I saw the sheer number of games you had worked out. There must be some way to find out who it was. This all still requires a JagCD to be able to play the games, right? It would be cool to try and work out a way to replace the missing R-Type music with a track on the CD. Maybe have a soundtrack load after the game. Is a bypass cart required? I've been learning Raptor on and off as I program more, although it's fruitless until I can play my own stuff on the system. I'll have to get the CD player and whatnot for that so it's still just a dream for me. I would love to program something that really makes the system shine and people will want. Maybe an RPG like Phantasy Star but with suped up graphics.
  18. I spend a lot of time (when I'm not taking care of little ones) programming and writing music (I just cut my index finger on my left hand the other day so the music thing is taking a back seat and Street Fight World is getting attention) on electric guitar. Run Out! came together pretty fast as well. Street Fight World is very challenging and may take a bit more time. On the subject of removing labels. I have had great results with an automotive cleaning/polishing product called NEVR-DULL. My wife also uses big pink erasers with much success.
