Let's take a look back at the original Golden Axe!
Papa replied to CGQuarterly's topic in Classic Console Discussion
I've been subscribed for some time now and couldn't agree more. Golden Axe is one of the best ever. I really LOVE Golden Axe 2 and 3 as well. In fact, if it says "Golden Axe" on it somewhere..I LIKE IT!! I really like the Dreamcast Smash Pack version that has different sound and the many variations that came out before that. I actually found the Master System version to be quite enjoyable and I have and play the PC Engine, PC, Amiga, Atari ST, Master System, Genesis, Mega Drive, arcade, and Dreamcast versions. Sadly, I don't have the Wonderswan color version which looks really awesome.. -
What are your 'top two' favorite TRS-80 Model I or III games?
Papa replied to Omega-TI's topic in Tandy Computers
Rampage and Thexder for me, yup. Rampage is freaking awesome, colorful, and huge. Thexder is a blast to play and has a transforming robot space-jet!! (honorable mentions go to Super Pitfall and Downland..) -
What size TV do you play your Atari & retro games on?
Papa replied to sloth-machine's topic in Atari 2600
I play on this usually.. It's an 81 Sony VideoScope projector TV. It's over fifty inches but the whole screen isn't filled up, so.. I also use it for movies and other game systems. When in the arcade I play on one of these for Atari.. This one has a Gemini and I think it's a nineteen inch screen.. And this one has a 7800 and also a nineteen inch screen.. I also play on computer screens with emulators, but prefer CRT over all the others. -
I really like Arcade Enhanced, although Pac-Man 8K is not on the list and is my favorite.

There are more Japanese games than American. Brazil has the strongest following, though. They had ToyTec versions of Street Fighter 2, female hero (Monica) versions of Alex Kidd, and many other off the wall games. I would say that Y's, Phantasy Star, Spellcaster, Cyber Shinobi, Kensaiden, Miracle Warriors (best box art in Haja No Fuunin followed by Spellcaster (Japanese version)) are some of the best! I could never pick just one. The Japanese system has SG-1000 compatibility and can play US games out the back with a simple adapter! The FM chip found only in the Japanese system enhances many games that were never even released in Japan! The FM sound versions of games usually sound a LOT better! Double Dragon is a great example.. You can mod a U.S. system to add the FM sound for games that support it!!

Homebrews for sale, also Digiplay, French Canadian
Papa replied to Steve Jones's topic in Intellivision / Aquarius
HEY, is THAT?..Yup..it's Space Cunt.. -
The Fat Sixer has the best color pallete! I'm pretty sure that after it they all had a seemingly reduced color selection!?! I really don't remember if my 5200 adapter had the original colors or not. Do any systems or adapters beyond the original have the first color set?

Get an Everdrive!! NHL and Lasorda can be pretty fun, but the rest are..uh.. I liked certain iconic sports titles, but today making a game dated is a sports titles forte. You could play pretty much any other game and it could seem fresh or applicable now, but once you pop in one of those dated sports games it all gets dead and old really quick. NBA Jam can have it's moments, but Basketbrawl is pretty much timeless! Lasorda is dated, whereas Baseball Stars (different systems, I know..) still seems fresh. Aikman football is OLD, but Mutant League Football NEVER get's OLD..I LOVE that game! NHL 95 was first coming out when I was a worker at a popular Record store that had an electronics section. I was into the genesis and had to fill out orders for all these games that I thought would be popular. I really wasn't sure what the college crowd would like, but I knew what I liked. So, I ordered 32X games and popular Capcom and Komani titles that I knew where all the rage in popular magazines. I nearly got fired for not ordering enough NHL 95 for all these sports crazy college kids (I was in High School and was the youngest employee at Looney T Birds)! Now you couldn't force people to buy those games and they all but fill up crate after crate at local pawn shops and used video game stores!! That store closed down long ago, and the owner was a smelly meatus eye that the crew working there despised, so I guess it was karma. Good luck getting rid of those dead old sports games and finding all the great arcade ports, side scrollers, shmups, RPGs, simulators, and Sega exclusives! REMEMER! You can cut the edges out of the cartridge port and play much of the Japanese library! You can mod the Model 1 very easily (one scratch and one soldiered link-up) to turn it into a Mega Drive (literally MAKES it a Japanese system), or install a switch to swap between regions. You can wire a halt switch to stop the 68000 and then put in a switch to overclock the processor up to 14Mhz!! This NEVER overheats and makes games like Sonic, Sonic 2, Sonic 3, and pretty much everything else (Including flight simulators) escape all instances of slow down (yes, it may crash or mess with the sound (Z80) on certain games! You can hook a Model 1 up to a JAMMA cabinet, too! Mega Drive/Genesis games look AWESOME on an arcade monitor!! All of these are extremely simple mods. I find it interesting that in Japan the system was named Mega Drive (like Omega or 'last', 'end', 'final') possibly insinuating that it would be the last system (drive) you will ever need. It was named Genesis here which could mean 'beginning'! One is the 'end' and the other the 'beginning'! Welcome to the club. I adore the Sega systems of old and I think they beat the competition even today! They had more exclusive and original titles than the competition and suited my love for the arcades of the time perfectly.

I don't use profanity openly. I may mix it up in conversation with my wife, but avoid it entirely outside of that. In forums I spell it using symbols, a$$, f**K, etc.. I totally agree that it's been overused as of late. I noted to my wife that when watching documentary videos of the war in Vietnam and comparing them to movies that are supposed to be 'accurate' depictions of the events therein, there is an overuse of profanity in movies, even considering the high stress and insane environments of war. Today people swear far too much, in my opinion. Language has been loosened. Consider the word "frack". It's a method of oil extraction that just a short time ago gained popularity as the "F" word in the Galactica series. Atari is pretty much completely safe for kids (although they have AO games that are rare and, in my opinion, ridiculous) and I think the forum should make an extra effort to be that way too!

Bro Punch VS Peace Sign.. -
Okay..okay..Adventure Bear Island it is!!
-
Soon you'll all be able to play Donkey Kong with slightly better sound and a Wonder Boy clone (may as well call it Wonder Bear)! JUST KIDDING! I know there are THREE titles for it.. If I could get one I would, but I just spent my allowance on something else.. Will there be a dev kit for it for homebrewers? I think it's pretty sad that it's been half a decade, a heart attack or two, a dropped bios engineer (that just picked up the slack) and FINALLY it's MAYBE rolling out for you all!?!?! I want one! I've been watching those YouTube videos of DKXM for MONTHS!!
-
Okay..I keep getting hit by the smelly-meatus-eye-nazi-bird badguys. I can't get to the door and I want to. I will try the other levels, as I started on #27. I couldn't stop laughing at how quick I was dying and If there was a counter for how many times I died it would probably be around one hundred and twenty. I'll try it on the cabinet and see what happens, maybe post a video or something. I would maybe cut back on the badguys, or make them have a slower/different pattern. It's HARD!

Thinking of buying a modded 5200 and gold contact controllers to play Gauntlet! I still have my old stack of games for it, too!! I like the 8-bit computers better, so you homebrew programmers better crack out more like this to sway me!!
-
Honestly, if you have Atari 8-bit computers you gain very little with an Atari 5200. It's not a casual acquisition. With that said, once I got a video modded one and working controllers it was a LOT more fun, but it's still kind of a pain to store/maintain and get software for, particularly in comparison to the 8-bit computers that do the same things and then some.
-
Yeah if you have an 8-bit I would look into an AtariMax Flash cart or one of those SIO2PC devices so you can play any game you want.
-
Yeah..I have the SIO2PC but you do have to pay for the full version of the transfer program. It's great for homemade and 'certain' games. I really love my 130XE!

I wouldn't mind buying it. I would need to get another 5200, but It's fun. Maybe offer a digital download of the ROM if you buy the cart?

Here's a clearer recording of the demo version. Not perfect, but still otay!! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l3uI6P3Qz5c&feature=youtu.be

Make a game about ancient history only full of high technology!!
-
There has been more animation added to several backgrounds on the last download. One technique that helps is to 'stick and move'. Once you land a strike on the badguy they are knocked back slightly. This gives you the opportunity to back away and then attack again. I've noticed that the game can be pretty hard. I wanted some serious replay value. If you play on hard you can run into the Toltec giant (go up) after the third shuriken (I think it's the third one) it will warp you past the first boss (there are lots of secrets that work like that in this game)! Using magic at the right time is extremely important for advancing. Over-using magic can be bad, too, as it may destroy prizes. I'll be posting a new video pretty soon. SUPER GLAD TO HEAR SOMEONES PLAYING IT!!   That made my day and I kinda needed it. (my 2 year old is sick, I broke a belt on my vacuum, smashed my thumb in the bag catch, and just pulled three hairs out of my pasta.. ) ..on an up-note I fixed all the jitters in my newest game!

..and here's a really big demo.. J Caraway Electric Demo 03.mp3 This one rocks HARD!!

The best of it, prolly.. J Caraway Acoustic Demo.mp3 J Caraway Electric Demo 01.mp3 Enjoy!!

The cutest death scene EVER! It plays well and reminds me of Metroid. I like the Pitfall-like levels where there is always a little trap or platform. Coolness!
-
That template is actually very useful once you get used to all the new names for resizing and background color schemes and what not. Very fun. I have ported over my latest work (Run Out) into this template and it helped sort out some little setbacks I was having with this particular game. FUN!!

Are there any source level debuggers for the VCS?
Papa replied to ZackAttack's topic in Atari 2600 Programming
Ah..a case of 'silent debuggers' again.. -
Electric is great for teaching to play and for kids, too. My son will get his calluses slowly, over time, and then hopefully move up to acoustic. I've written my own music for years and I really like how smooth and easy electrics are to play. I often play my acoustic outside, though. I also use it to put my son to sleep (no, not the bonk-on-the-head way, the whimsical melody way..). I picked both. Here is some inspiration for budding guitarists..
