I have an old IBM AT running a home automation/energy monitor system. It has the 5.25. dual DS/DD and a 5.25 1.2 MB floppy. Dos was up to 4.01 until the inclusion of the coprocessor on the same substrate as the processor and needed DOS 5.0.

I had the same computer system, tapes and all. Small black and white tv for monitor. They did have a floppy drive but it was very expensive at that time. If you wanted something that you had stored on a tape, you had to go through the whole tape and if the volume wasn't set just right, you would have to do it again. It was the TRS 80 color computer 64K I believe. Yes it is funny how technology has changed and the modem thing was very annoying. Never at that time would have dreamed of computers the way that they are now let alone the way the internet has changed and the vast speed of the computers now. Same thing with the old video games. I remember the old two bars and square ball and now to watch my son play that xbox 360 live on tv was just so unthought of back in my day. A big step up from the pac man that most of us were raised on and a lot more money also.

I recommend using NASM as your first assembler, because it is open source and cross platform (works in Windows, Linux, and even Mac OS X) Now, that you wrote a primitive "Hello world" bootloader, search for more complex examples. Don't worry if you find them in a slightly different syntax (MASM, FASM, etc). It is more important to get the very idea and implement it yourself. If you don't succeed at first, StackOverflow or Daniweb will help you:) Also, if you find yourself to like NASM, here is a great book to look at: Assembly Language: Step-by-step.

I have two old Dells with P4s in them. Using one as an Ubuntu box to mess around with and the other as a Minecraft server. Works really well. P4s are still beastly.
