Oh, this is the WORST part about it! Cleaning Paddle controllers!

The first challenge was getting them free from the tangled wire monster in my closet. I got one out. Cleaned those out. Now the console flickers when the paddles are plugged in. Luckily, I have a spare set of paddles and they work perfectly.

Still a bit weird, though. I've never seen that behavior before. how much power is being sent to these controllers?

I'm just going to admit it now: I was a teenager once that had no idea of value or that treating stuff badly would soon make them look bad or lost. So this holiday season I cleaned up the house, found all my 2600 carts strewn about. seriously, I was 5 minutes away from being on an episode of Hoarders, but I turned around!

Now I'm in the process of cleaning up. with the help of a psychologist, I can now determine what is trash and what isn't. All souveniers I never looked at? Gone. Game systems? Cleaned up and stored. I can't let myself do this again. I was literally killing myself in trash.

Now that I got that aired out. I can actually sit down and clean my systems. I have one mint-condition system, sans heavy dust, but my 2nd system has seen better days. I'm going to attempt a cleanup. Dust and mites, moths and other junk got in it, and it just looks horrible. I'll post an image when I have the thing cleaned up.

Ok, the first pic is my loot. Since I half-assed cared for these games, labels have fallen off. mostly parker brothers ones. I do have a space invaders missing a label. Oh well.

My river raid looks like absolute crap. like, not even Harvey Dent looked this bad.

On the other hand, I've already cleaned one of my consoles before I posted this (it was pretty much perfect anyway) and it shines! 2nd pic is of that console. He's not heavy, but he's still my brother.

Okay, so I've been doing some comparisons between the two consoles, to see what I can do to fix them. I'll just list what I've found here.

I have two units, one I will call stiff (because the switches are stiff) and the other loose (since the switches are.. you know)

So Stiff has the following anomalies:

Anything bright and blue hues will bleed. a lot. a little on the right and a lot on the left. This makes the copyright text on Yar's revenge almost unreadable.
On Centipede's title screen, the Blue section of the centipede (the N) is very blurry. the copyright text and ATARI letters are blurry as well, shifted left.

All reddish hue seems to be fine. There is a little ghosting on bright white (visible in B&W mode on Video pinball). the Purple colors are also "bordered" with ghosting.

The first stage of Jr. Pac Man has a little noise in the olive/brown maze part.
On the right side of the blocks on Super Breakout, there is a little bright white line there.

    Loose has this:
Jr. Pac Man stage starts off GREEN! After a few minutes, the colors slowly come back to normal. very strange.
There isn't any fuzz in the signal, that I can see.
Kool-Aid Man does NOT WORK.... Well, it does sometimes, but on occasions it will go mental and not show the score, and the player just bounces all over the walls. Very weird.
There is a little ghosting on greenish hues on this one, some on the blue, but it will go away (!!) after a few minutes.

Most of these issues aren't very critical, other than some of the bleeding, Stiff is in great shape! I would, however, like to remedy some of these things.

WARNING: This will probably make you cringe.

Remember that stuff I said about me not taking care of stuff? Well, this one wasn't me. I saved this from the trashcan somewhere.

This hurts to look at. It plays great, but... It's painful.
