  1. Stella crashes with "Windows Mobile 6.1 April 2008" release. Bigtime.

I'm able to run the software for a few seconds, and while the program is initializing, the screen turns black (as expected for the menu) but then a bright grey line shows at the top of the screen and the application crashes. I don't know how to paste the crash log or how to get around this. I have the roms in the right place...

Is this a user error or is something else at play here?

  2. I had an issue like this when my adaptor started going on the fritz. I'm sure it's been wrapped up/unwrapped and such for a good amount by now, if you have one with a really long wire like mine had. I'd try to get a replacement AC adaptor ASAP. They're kind of hard to find unless you're going for an all-in-one adaptor, which seem to break on me more often than any AC adaptor I've had. :ponder:

  3. Damn, nothing I need, which is a good Genesis controller. I had bought one from amazon that had a broken C button for 99 cents since I was only going to use it for a joystick replacement, but I wore it out during a long session of decathalon.

I think I should just stop playing that game.

  4. Whoa, I've never come across anything like that, ever. The fact that it's with a manual and seems unused makes this very very suspicious.

also, why this might be a bit picky, that manual seems a bit too modern to me. I would say this would be a mid 80s to early 90s product, not anything during the "golden age" of atari gaming. at least not 1982 ish.

of course I could be wrong ( I hope! I want to see what this might be!). :P

Edit: Thanks CPUWIZ, it's not for 2600, that's why it threw me off. what a weird concept for a game.

  5. Ok, I showed the demonstration to some friends and one said that it would probably be best if I had something interactive. The whole Doctor thing, while impressive, is borderline psychedelic (ok, it is) so I'm not going to use that. :dunce:

    Ok so far I have:

    1. Star Ship
    2. Stargate
    3. Ladybug (Found the ROM finally)
    4. Medieval Mayhem
    5. Stratogems
    6. Maybe Pitfall II, or Thrust

anything else I could show? I gotta fill up 5 minutes emot-v.gif

edit: actually, this might be enough. I might want to show off one more game though. :P

  6. TAKE YOUR PILLS

Is that a flashing Dr. Phil? good god, I don't want to scare the children. :P

Also, what are the dimensions for PAL and NTSC? I need to set up the applet to the right size, I'm getting some really wonky pixels. ( I need to add that to my specs section... :ponder: )

EDIT: FGHASFAHG what the heck resolution does the doctor use? that's nuts! I didn't even know such things were possible...

  7. Ladybug, Thrust, Medievil Mayhem would do the job

yes, I already had Ladybug as one of the possibilities. It really impressed me!. i can show a few on the last list, too, so Medieval Mayhem would be good too. I just gotta find the rom for ladybug. The one I have has no music. :(

Seems like Stargate should be in there somewhere.

    That's a good post-crash game. Thanks!

an yes, that list will help a lot! I'll be sure to credit you!

  8. Ok, I coudn't come up with a good name for this thread but any mod that can please try and take a crack at it.

In my computer class (where things get as complex as javascript.. *snrk*)I will be presenting a "final project" website... It will be yet another Atari VCS fanpage (like any guy hasn't made one in geocities already!). Any information I find I am citing- I don't want to be spreading misinformation, especially on the specs of the machine. You won't believe how wrong it is on some legitimate publications!

I plan to have some history on the 2600, tech specs, its impact on culture, et cetera... and as a final note, I will be using Jstella to show off an Atari 2600 program.

I need something that would impress the audience since most of these students probably know Atari from vague memories of pitfall and that atrocious TV joystick game. I don't think most bought the flashback II (as I had). So my idea is this:

    1. Show Star Ship or any other atrocious 1978 game
    2. show a 1982-3 game (sub-crash)
    3. show a crash/post-crash game
    4. show the most impressive game/program/demo I can find.

I got the first three down. I need something on the last one that will be an amazing contrast to the 1st on the list.

    Thing is, which program?

Since we won't be playing the games (much), I would probably be best off showing something graphically impressive. But, as we all know, that's subjective, and I'm up for many suggestions. I can't really go on about how "impossible" something would be due to a scanline or whatever. but I can show them pretty flashing colors and music and other nonsense... preferrably organized colors, since, we all know the VCS can make some pretty trippy stuff, but that still isn't impressive.

I might be thinking my audience is a little too stupid and would understand the limitations of the console, but I don't want to take that chance just yet.

So, what demo/program/game do you think would make an impressive final act? it can be homebrew, a stella mailing list binary, or even a commercial game. but something recent would be best.

  9. A long time ago when I was in high school I attempted to hack Mr. Do! to resemble the IBMPC game Digger. I really didn't know what the hell I was doing, and I only got as far as changing some sprites. However, I felt recently that this hack could be continued by someone with more, erm, experience with staring at Disassembled ASM code than I ever had.

Here is the last Binary I released of it. As you can see, it's very crude.

However, Digger is very like Mr. Do!. The only differences are:

Comical Digging machine replaces the clown

the Digger can fire a missile ( in a straight line, not a bouncy ball, and it dies when it hits a wall)

The monsters appear in the top right corner

rocks are replaced with bags of money that leave gold when they break, for 500 points.

The only big difference that makes the game unique (and this hack a challenge):

    Power Cherries!

When a monster is shot or killed by a falling money bag, another spawns from the top right corner. When all the monsters on the level have been spawned, the remaining monsters on the screen become digger food, only if he eats the bonus cherry that spawns in the top right corner. When he eats the cherry, the colors flash, the monsters try to run from you, and for 15 seconds, you are invincible to the monsters and can eat them, just like Pac-man. scoring for the monsters eaten is precisely the same as pac-man, 200, 400, 800, 1600. However, Mr. Do! only seems to spawn two at a time.

I hope someone picks this up and takes a try at it, I would be grateful.

  10. let's go down the list:

    it is a portable system

    plays GBA games

Can use an extension(3rd party) to play GBC-GB games

Unlike the GB micro which only plays GBA games!

If the nintendo DS cannot be called a GameBoy DS , then they made a bad move.

I still call it a gameboy, my friends do. My family does. Why can't nintendo? :(

  11. the best one That I remember were Final Fantasy V and VI, and even on that the load times were atrocious. I'd expect some hyped "powerful" console like the Playstation to render 2d graphics easily. however, I wasn't wowed at all... Horrible Magic effects (flickering sprites for "translucency" on a Plasma screen looks shite) and the unexplained long loading times (it's just TILES and a character, it's not Need for Speed here!)...

You do realize that the 2D Final Fantasy games on the Playstation are straight SNES ports, right? The crappy graphical effects are faithful to the original SNES versions.

The long load times are unique to the PSX ports, but I don't think anybody's ever accused the Playstation of having short loading times.

Then why didn't I get a port of Star Ocean?!

  12. I know I'm bumping this topic but this has to be said. 2D games on the Playstation were slim at best. the best one That I remember were Final Fantasy V and VI, and even on that the load times were atrocious.

The SNES could do better than the crap i was seeing. Probably why I spent my time playing Kirby's Super star. Best game for the SNES imo. :P

Not to say the games weren't fun. They=awesome. just, I was expecting something a little better for 30 dollars.

    (actually, it was $50....)
