  1. This whole thing sounds like it came out of the George Costanza playbook.
  2. Usually video game consoles have to be released before they can fail. But that's not enough for the Chameleon. It failed before it even existed. Bravo, bravo. It's a shame that so many were duped on this, because it shows there is a demand for these products. An honest demand for retro consoles - even if they aren't exactly "retro" - and all that potential consumers got was empty promises, faked prototypes, faked.. everything, really. If I've learned anything from this dumpster fire, it's that legitimate, first-party retro system rereleases could sell! Or they would have, before things like this put a bad taste in consumers' mouths. Perhaps Nintendo could rig up a SNES Model 3 for pennies on the dollar, throw in a multi-cart, sell it for $50, and roll in the cash.
  3. I had assumed that most wouldn't know JSON - but since I'm using that internally anyway, I guess it'd be okay to just use that app-wide. I intend to make an Android application. iOS is a "maybe" - I don't know iOS development yet.
  4. Imagine: You're at a party. The VCS is out and everyone wants to play. Thing is, Game 1 ain't working for the beer-loving patrons. "It's too fast!" So you look at the Manual and: AAAAAHHH! Do you: A: flip through the numbers one by one, hoping to hit the right one B: Try to read the chart, if you have the manual C: Try to download a manual scan D: Get an application for that I'm hoping to create option D. The VCS Variator is the epitome of laziness. Here's how it'll work: 1. Pick a Game. This can be done by several ways: By controller, Genre (maybe), Manufacturer, max number of players. Title search is also available. 2. At the next screen, you are able to select the options you want. For example, for Space Invaders, i should be able to select "Basic Game, Invisible Invaders" and the application spits out "9" - which you then select on the VCS. 3. Write your score down in the scoreboard cards. Additional features I'm hoping to add: 1. Ability to add additional games through a text format (CSV probably) 2. Ability to add favorite variations, with custom names 3. Add difficulty switches to the variations interface Now for the bad news: There is no prototype for mobile phones yet. hope to have a demo up this year. My Proof of concept is a rails app which queries a database. The main hurdle to this is the lack of sane text game variation tables - no one thought about parsing them into a phone application.
  5. If you think the guy sitting next to you munching popcorn is bad, try going to a theatre where people regularly sneak in their own all-you-can-eat fajitas!

  6. Multi-threaded OSes feel so weird. They're fast, but the way they do things feels... just a bit off.

  8. I donate to Classic Game Room. I've watched his show since the old days (1999?) and have always been a fan. Now, some in the community (the gaming community, just making this clear) consider this a "handout" or "crowdfunded welfare" because the idea of people actually willing to give extra money to support someone is just, outrageous. It's one of the problems artists and content creators face all the time - this idea that their job "isn't a job" because it's too close to what the critics consider "hobbies". This stuff goes way back to the days of , well, probably the pyramids, if you want to know the truth about it. If anyone says that your job isn't a "real job", where "real job" is defined as driving railroad spikes into ties like John Henry or something... It's best to ignore them.
  9. Okay, I'm gonna throw in something here. The reason Mark is so popular with the late-20s millennials is quite simple: He gives context to the games at their release. Yes, this may be boring as hell to those who are pushing 50, who lived the 70s and 80s and find his reviews just more of the same. But for those that didn't get to live the golden age of videogames, Mark provides a bit of a look-in. He refuses to "evolve" his videos because, well, YouTube's idea of evolved game review is: And yes I understand that Mark's reviews may be boring or have dry humor, but I'd rather have honesty than screaming "personalities" with randomly dyed hair screaming at terribly made games on cue, simply because it rolls in the cash.

On a random note & probably way off topic I LOVE retropie! Been a pain figuring out decent rom sets for all the versions of MAME FBA though. And don't even get me started on how un user friendly that Atari 8 bit emulator. It's all free and good though.

But ya the extra speed is probably useful. It's only a $35 chip so if it goes a little early there's not too much lost. :)

  15. RCA tried their best to bring SCART over to the states, touting it as "high definition" or some nonsense, instead of saying "this reduces wire clutter". Else, people would have bought it. My dad actually bought into the "hype" and bought a Sylvania, which weighs as much as a cartoon bank safe. Could I tell a difference in quality? Barely. By the time I could get SCART cables for my consoles, the TV was already obsolete. Plus, none of the Hi-Fis supported that kind of audio. You know what consumers like though? Coax-like connectors. The less cables and plugs, the better. SCART was an attempt at that but failed in the states due to poor marketing, plus coax connections still being king, as stereo was still not even supported by most cable boxes - it took Miami Vice for people to finally complain about audio quality! HDMI was a smash hit - one cable provides audio and video, just like the cable box. Who needs to worry about RGB, Yr/PBR/Schlitz connectors, when just one cable does all that mess? I couldn't care less about the "high definition" bit! going from 5 inputs to just ONE saves so much hassle that I wish we had SCART back in the day, because wow, I can finally get behind my TV and not get stuck in a ball of RCA cables!

Is it like a Mac laptop keyboard where delete is fn + backspace?

  19. I've also been burned on this. Atari always means "2600" to some people. The 5200 and 7800? Those didn't exist.
  20. I think introducing "Virtual Memory" as the ultimate selling point for computers (thanks Apple for starting this) and using "memory" itself as an advertising gimmick in the 80s for capacity to load programs also contributed to the problems of confusing consumers well into the 90s. Even when the later Macs and PCs came out, people would confuse HDD space with installed RAM and VM swap space, with mangled terms and misunderstandings resulting in "I have 16 Megs of Virtual Memory, that's enough to install this game, right?"
  21. Surely in your travels you've managed to completely alienate a person when they try to discuss a topic like classic gaming, or something similar. I have a few stories, one is pretty embarrassing. Went to a Radioshack and asked for an F-Type to RCA adapter. Received blank stares. So I just went and got it myself. Cashier had no idea what it was. Did they ever train these people? The term "paddles" for paddle controllers. To this day this still confuses people, even those who grew up with these consoles. when I clarify, they go "Oh, the pong controllers". Maybe Atari should have just called them that. I was in an unclaimed storage center with a buddy of mine that works there, who had just found a Xonox double-ender in a storage bin. We were talking about that when a woman in the store nearly had a come-apart moment telling us to not use such sexual language as "double-ender" in front of her children. Words have different meanings, lady... Now for one that I got confused on... I had a retro setup at a con in Alabama back in 2010 or so. I had a classic 586 computer (It was an IBM PC, I know how that is around here) along with some game consoles. A man in his 20s comes up to the computer and goes "Wow, I would love to bring my PS2 here tomorrow!". I told him that I had many games for the original platform but if it was a 386, that would be okay, I could throw Wolfenstein on it. He told me he'd bring his favorite game for it - Metal Gear Solid 2. Oh. that PS2. Get outta here, man!
  22. OH lord. I had to talk down a person from selling all his comic books. The reason? His wife told him to "grow up". Which is hilarious, since she has an insane Barbie Doll collection.
  23. Ohh boy time to unload some dirt. Kangaroo in box for $75. Solaris in box for $85. Chuck Norris double-ender for $100 because "It's Chuck Norris, worth the price". No. And the one that bothered me the most: a thrift store selling the Sears versions of the Atari games for $15 - while the rest were less than $5. The reason? "Well the Sears ones are rare." Not related to price, but here are some absolutely stupid things I've seen: Bundling Indy500 with paddle controllers, and then bundling Kaboom! with Driving controllers. Reason? "The Indy game is for two players so that's the controller you use." Not arguing with that. Separating Omega Race with the required controller attachment, then selling the attachment for more than the game. Guy deliberately trying to pass off the later joysticks as "authentic" joysticks, claiming that they're "mechanical".
