So Chart45 isn't crazy... ADAM plays SGM games sans SGM!
juice2839 replied to NIAD's topic in ColecoVision / Adam
The only thing the Adam uses on the SGM is the AY-3-8910 and bank switched 8K. Actually my bad. On the adam I got from chart, Kings Valley shows everything good except the PSG so it's not even using the banked 8k.. This Adam should work with just a AY-3-8910 hooked up too. At least for kings valley. With my Speech Game Module if it's an adam it disables all the 24k board ram (on the speech game Module) but you can still bank switch the 8k ram if you wanted. Not sure how Opcodes SGM does it. One other note - I have not seen any game that uses the 8k bank memory. I just put it in as Nanochess self test checked for it. I would bet that the Opcode SGM probably just disables the 8k bank switch along with the 24k if it's an Adam, but again maybe he will chime in. -
Someone has inquired about making a Basic Program with the Adam to make the speech work. This should be pretty simple for someone that is familiar with the Adam Basic. If there is an equivalent basic command for the assembly language out command then you would just need to do a few outs to set up the ay-3-8912 and then out the allophones and you'd have speech (see the assembly listing above for how to do it). If there is no equivalent out command in basic then someone could make a small machine language program to do the dirty work and basic could just transfer the allophone data to it. If someone was really creative I think it would be fairly easy to modify the text to speech program used for the original speech device and make it work with this.

Here is a very basic program to make it talk. I am currently working on some other software along with others. It shouldn't be long until a C library is made. testcv.bin testcv.asm

Opcode QUOTE - "Juice suggested you a kind of bet this morning, one he already lost, since he said we wouldn't ship the SGM within a month. I will propose a different deal though. Wait until we show you the SGM 2 in a couple of months, and if we don't do so, or you aren't impressed by what you see, go ahead and get the clone with voice chip. " So you possibly may show this in 2 months? How long till it ships 5 years? At any rate I like the odds. P.S. I am glad I lost the first bet and you are finally shipping what people paid for.

I doubt there is a work around because the memory expander takes control of how the ram is bank swtiched. -
Excuse me no personal vendetta. I support the projects I make.. I won't leave the community high and dry. Again I want to thank the tons of people that have been private messaging me with there support I really do appreciate it. I'll get to work again shipping these orders now.
-
No problems Robb. Thanks for the support you did offer. I wish you luck with the ship your on.

You're right I will apologize for ED... Community, I extend my deepest apologize for Ed taking your money years ago and not sending you your product. With this apology I say this " If ED does not ship your item within 1 month from now and you retract your sale with him I will sell you a Speech Game Module at below cost atually $49.99 with free shipping in USA" . You must post on his thread you want your money back from him and then PM me. Maybe if enough people come together we can make a change for the better and start to get programmers and engineers on the same page and make some awesome new products like you mentioned. Motherboard and such.. Also when a new motherboard is built I will design for MSX and Sega support so that all these games do not need ported, they can just run on the new motherboard.
-
Given you're gifted for electronics and you made all those composite video adaptors, why didn't you made a Colecovision motherboard? why not an Intellivision expander for Colecovision? RGB adapter not composite. Big difference.
-
Now I realize why when I looked at years past posts from people that can actually make cool new products and contribute to the colecovision community that they have suddenly disappeared.
-
Being that you are so biased I will not wasted my time defending the obvious. I will say that I have been in contact with Chris from Colecovision and all is not as it seems. Please PM me Albert.

So Chart45 isn't crazy... ADAM plays SGM games sans SGM!

The Special Adams are able to bank switch the lower 8k in and out while the others are not. This is one of the things the sgm does along with add the 24k ram. Since the adam already has the 24k ram that passes and says Adam Detected. Then the nanochess test goes on to test the bank switching lower 8k. This fails on most adams, but not your special ones. The test then goes on to check for the ay-3-8910. So for some reason your special adams can bank switch the 8k ram in and out. -

If you want to hook a ay-3-8912 sound chip to an adam this is how you do the addressing. I know chart was asking me for this awhile ago.. The first chip is a 74ls138 and the others are 74ls32 and 74ls00. With this your special adam will play all the SGM games with sound. Pin 7 of the 74ls138 is not connected to anything. Ignore the wire from it. -
Some pictures for the people that have been asking.

Right now I am trying to negotiate a bulk price on the components for a run of 75-100 units. If everything goes well this next run will be 75-100 units within a month. So everyone can get one. Thanks, Again
-
OKay thanks everyone for the support. We are sold out on this first run, please do not paypal without giving me a PM to make sure we have some in stock.. Thanks so much guys.

Thanks Robb and I appreciate you being one of my biggest supporters.

I've been thinking about something here today as I carefully hand assemble, inspect and test each one of these Speech Game Modules that are shipping shortly. Why am I doing this? For money? HAHA ... No I can tell you that for the headaches and time I would make more money working part time mowing lawns 1 time a week. For fame? No I could care less about fame... LOL The reason I do it is... I'm chasing a feeling.. Some people do drugs, some people drink booze or drive fast for a feeling.. I can tell you that I do this for the feeling I sometimes get making these projects. It's the feeling of being 10 years old and opening up my first Coleco at Christmas, or the feeling I got writing my first basic program in the 80's. The feeling of hooking up my first circuit to my TRS-80 Color computer and seeing my dad not only cringe because at the time that computer cost a whole pay check, but the feeling I got when my circuit worked and he was so proud.. That's why I do this stuff. If I can make one person have that feeling when they open up one of the devices I helped create that's worth all the trouble this hobby brings. I know haters are going to hate and some people will be hurt that something better comes out. In the long run I think it helps the community to make projects that come out at a reasonable time after promised with healthy competition. I don't like to boast of vapor wear and get everyone hyped about something that will never come out. I hope that my reputation will show that when I saw something will come out it will. Thanks for the listen, Fred

if they have a problem with me making games for my module then that's there problem.
-
It's sad that you have decided this. Luckily there has been a tremendous amount of support outside the forums from programmers and coleco fans through private messages.. The fact that the forum moderators are so biased has caused many to shy from publicly praising the work involved in producing a superior shipping product. I just want to thank them all and I will continue to make great things for the Colecovision despite the few people that continue to hold on to the hope of vapor hardware from others. Also I would like to point out that porting software from other games systems that is copyrighted is copyright infringement. This is exactly what opcode does.. One last note: Please be aware that any software released by anyone that specifically blocks the Speech Game Module will be released by me as a fully fuctional game for free.

Here are pictures of the final pcb in this thread. http://atariage.com/forums/topic/247039-sgm-are-in/

I have not personally tested them, but some have said they work just fine. They do not work with Scart models.
-
Okay thank you everyone this first batch of 10 has sold out. Please expect these to be shipped within a week. thanks, Fred

juice2839 replied to NIAD's topic in ColecoVision / Adam
The difference is that the Adam that plays the SGM games has a different memory bank switching circuit. It would be easy to add just the AY-3-8910 for sound to one of these Adams.
