  I feel for you. A few months ago I was heating the oven to 450°F using a metal oven thermometer. When the oven was heated up I took the thermometer out with an oven mitt and set it on top of the stove. About 30 seconds later I realized I needed to use the burner the thermometer was sitting on so in a moment of thoughtless haste I grabbed the thermometer to move it... with my bare hands. Yeah, you can guess how that went.
