My property taxes just went up 5x because I didn't know previously that I was getting a massive discount from my late mother being over 65. This Halloween the trick is on me.
5X is excessive for a senior exemption. If the house changed to your name and is your primary residence, did you take a homestead exemption? In my state, YOU must claim it, it's not automatically done. Mortgage exemption is another, but doesn't add up to much.
She was already getting the homestead deduction or something like it, and when the property transferred to me, we lost it. And yes, 5x. The only exaggeration is in the amount of extra jobs I'm going to need. carlsson, you got any retirees looking for a place to stay?
By the way, the otherwise tax burdened country of Sweden replaced the property tax with a mostly flat property fee a couple of years ago. Among other things it lets elderly remain in their valuable houses until the very end, though some people are getting vocal about bringing back the tax again.
